It's Official - The i-mate JAMin (HTC Prophet)

On the outside, it is very similar to the i-mate JAM, yet on the inside, it sports a different set of specifications. The JAMin has a TI OMAP 200MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, IrDA, an SDIO/SD/MMC slot, a 2.8" QVGA (240 x 320) TFT-LCD, a 2.0-megapixel CMOS camera, and Windows Mobile 5.0. No word yet on official availability or pricing.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20060130-imateJAMin.jpg" /><br /><br />The HTC Prophet is also available as the Dopod 818 Pro, and soon, the O2 Xda Neo.

My iMate Jam has served me well for the last year, but the JAMin is tempting. I like the built in WiFi. Might just hold out and see if anyone adds VGA into the mix without making the device enormously enormous...

Why are all PPCs still stuck with USB 1 though? USB 2 transfer speeds would (possibly) make sync and file transfer swifter.

I too love my magician. Its perfect to carry anywhere.

AFA VGA is concerned, I think one would need really great eyes to view info on the go on the 2.8" screen

The physical screen dimensions would have to be larger for VGA. I would be happier to have a slightly larger device if it had a 3.6" VGA screen, as long as it was simply wider and thinner. The form factor of the Acer n311 would be fine! Just add in a phone to the mix...

quick question: is EDGE the same as HSDPA ?
because austria's biggest mobile provider started advertising the rollout of hsdpa, which is supposed to be 3 or 4 times (i forgot which one) faster than UMTS, which alone should bring broadband-speeds to mobile devices!

because with wifi+edge (if it is what i think it is), this thing would be near-perfect for me. (vga would have been nice ...)

Nice Jam update, would normally be interested, but now I've got cable TV streamed over 3G on my Vodafone UK account for 8 dollars a month(even HBO) I just have to have 3G as well, at the moment that means Symbian phones (waits for 3G/WIFI/proper 2mp camera, the 2mp camera on my N70 wipes the floor with the Jam cam)
The only 3G HTC phone is lovely but WAY too big.

No, the two are very different. EDGE, while being an enhancement to the well-known GPRS, still falls short of typical 3G speeds. HSDPA (3.5G), on the other hand, is a different type of telephony protocol altogether, and it's much faster than EDGE.

I have the Dopod 818 Pro version of this (after having a JAM and a Qtek 9100) and it's really a great device. The great size of the JAM with tons of extra features like WiFi, EDGE, WM5 and a much better camera. The "slow" processor hasn't been an issue for me, although I don't do too much multitasking. Highly recommended.

O2 XDA Atom x ETEN M600 x i-mate JAMin

Which one provides longest lasting charge?
Which one is fastest overall?
Which one can handle multitasking better?
Which one runs Skype better?
All this in confrontation with market price (cost/benefit relation).
I believe ETEN M600 wins by far...

You might want to wait a few months and see if anything new comes to the market. Rumour is, there are some HSDPA Pocket PC Phones on the horizon. ;)

Similar, but the HTC Prophet has got a much better camera than the K-Jam for starters...
