It features a Samsung S3C2440 400MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB Flash ROM, a 2.8" QVGA (240 x 320) 65K-colour TFT-LCD, quad-band GSM/GPRS support, Bluetooth 1.2 (Class 2), integrated GPS (SiRFstar III chipset with support for TMC), a 1.3-megapixel camera, a miniSD slot, a 1440mAh Li-Ion battery, and Windows Mobile 5.0. Unfortunately, there is no Wi-Fi, which the E-TEN M600 otherwise has. But, if you don't see that as a drawback and you're still interested in picking up a G500, then look to your local dealer in March 2006. <br /><br />From the immortal Fabio, <i>"I can't believe it's not a RAZR"</i>!

It's funny how those blue lines makes it look like a pac-man maze!

The idea of not having to carry around a seperate bluetooth receiver nor going through the process of connecting them is cetainly appealing.

The missing Wifi is disappointing, but when I think about it, I don't use the Wifi on my Toshiba that much.

Of course the rule is: once you don't have something is when you need it.

i would also prefer GPS over wifi if given the choice. web on PPC is good, but if a computer is nearby I will 99.9% of the time choose the PC/Mac.

Does anybody know if this device will be available in the US, and which carrier will carry it? Thanks!

If history is anything to go by, TORQ will sell it as a standalone product. Most American carriers tend not to carry E-TEN products.

"mini-sd slot"

IMHO, the form factor is adequate to have normal sd slot instead of sd.
SD cards are lot more cheaper than mini-sds. They come in higher capacities too(useful for GPS function to carry lots of maps)

I'd guess it is also missing EDGE/UTMS access as well. Too bad, because it look cool and I think integrating GPS is the wave of things to come. It seems everyone wants to know where they are going all of the sudden.

Bingo. Another reason to get a E-TEN M600.

I really want a dual slotted device, failing that, a device with a SD slot. The device would have to be pretty amazing to get me onto a device with a mini SD slot. This isn't that device.

This is my first post but let me begin by thanking you for your awesome review of the M600. I have been toying with the idea of getting that over the O2 Atom [as i just sold my mini] and your review reassured me that it was the device to go to.....thanks mate it honestly was a great review

Now the problem i have is that i am scheduled to go and have a look at an e-ten M600 today [live in sydney] and more than likely make the purchase however your post on the G500 has thrown me totally off course nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :).......

WIll you be doing a review on the G500 any time soon.....I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments people hav on whether to take the plunge and go for the M600 or wait for the G500.....

I'd prefer a full-size SD slot, too, but Mini-SD cards are available in 2 GB now. That should be enough more than enough to hold maps of the entire U.S. For reference, using CoPilot Live Pocket PC 6, I got the entire U.S. plus part of Canada and Mexico in less than 1 GB (about 940-950 MB if I recall correctly).

The only reason I prefer SD is because I already have a 2 GB SD card, so I don't want to buy another 2 GB card.

E-TEN Information Systems is proud to introduce the G500 Pocket PC Phone, the first PDA phone to have built-in GPS and TMC functions.

So where did the quote come from saying that it has built-in TMC? Pony99CA doesn't believe you and it doesn't seem to be mentioned at the linked source.

I wouldn't say that I don't "believe" that it doesn't have "TMC function". However, given what the site says about "TMC support", I question if there's a TMC receiver built-in (as opposed to having a TMC driver in ROM, for example).

If the GPS antenna also includes a TMC antenna, that would be awesome. I'm just a bit skeptical about it.

It's from a press release that was sent to us. For some reason, it's not published on the E-TEN site, so here it is in its entirety:

E-TEN Information Systems is proud to introduce the G500 Pocket PC Phone, the first PDA phone to have built-in GPS and TMC functions.

"Building upon E-TEN's proven record as a successful Pocket PC Phone maker, we are offering our newest device with built-in GPS functionality," announced company president, Wayne Ma, "The G500 represents our most complete package yet for the mobile professional."

The G500 is the first Pocket PC Phone from E-TEN to have fully integrated GPS capabilities. The G500's embedded RoyalTek GPS module, featuring the SiRF Star III high sensitivity chipset and an innovative internal antenna design, means that PDA or phone owners who also regularly need to access GPS services, no longer have to carry additional accessories or even a separate GPS device when they travel. No other product makes it as easy or as convenient as the G500 to have the latest satellite navigation technology always on hand.

The G500 is also the first PDA phone with an onboard receiver allowing it to support Traffic Message Channel (TMC) functions in available countries when using the popular GPS application, Destinator™. When traveling, the G500 can receive regularly updated reports of the traffic conditions ahead and so alert drivers to problems (such as sudden traffic congestion) that could cause delays on a planned route. TMC's advanced warning system enables users to make on the fly changes to their journey, avoiding traffic jams and holdups and giving them an advantage to reach their destinations on time.

The G500 has been optimized to support many of the popular GPS software packages available for the Pocket PC. Its large touch screen display is ideal for using fingertip navigation controls, while the large storage capacity lets users store roadmaps for multiple countries and destinations directly on the device. E-TEN also includes several unique, in-house developed or licensed software applications that add even more value to the G500 package. For example Location SMS integrates GPS and phone functions to enable users to send SMS text messages including their precise GPS coordinates to any other SMS compatible phone or device.

As a phone device, the G500 supports GSM quad-band 850/900/1800/1900MHz and GPRS standards allowing users to make and receive voice calls, send SMS text messages, and access data services including email, mobile Internet, and MMS wherever they travel. The G500 also supports Bluetooth® 1.2 enabling wireless connectivity with other Bluetooth devices and accessories. Installed on the G500 are E-TEN exclusive applications that offer enhanced functionality over other Pocket PC Phones including; Voice Commander to enable complete hands-free voice dialing capabilities, Advanced Speed Dial which makes dialing frequent contacts even easier, and GPRS Wizard which simplifies the task of configuring data services such as GPRS, MMS, and WAP.

Based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, the G500 includes a number of software applications designed to add value for mobile business or mobile entertainment focused users. Support for Microsoft Office formats (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) lets G500 owners work with their important documents even while traveling, while Windows Media Player enables them to watch movies and listen to music.

The G500 has been ergonomically designed for handheld operation. Comparable in size to traditional mobile phone handsets, the device’s combination of large (2.8") touch screen display, intuitively positioned hardware buttons, and easy to customize software interface, offers users multiple opportunities to personalize the G500 to match their unique usage requirements. Also, as an added benefit to both business users and travelers, the G500 features a 1.3M pixel CMOS camera and built in microphone allowing them to capture digital images and voice memo recordings.

Combining PDA, phone, GPS, camera, and digital entertainment functions all in a single pocketsize device, the G500 represents E-TEN's most integrated and highly-refined solution to meet the needs of business professionals and frequent travelers.

The G500 will be available in most markets worldwide in March 2006. For more information on pricing and availability in your region, or to discuss possible sales and marketing initiatives please contact [email protected].

Fourth paragraph - it does state that there's an onboard receiver supporting TMC.

I'm not sure yet. If I do get around to reviewing it, I will let you know, but the question here is, do you need a review to sway your decision? What about the G500 entices you? And, what about the M600 entices you? If it's Wi-Fi on the M600, then I think the choice is easy. :) But it all depends on what you're looking for in a Pocket PC.

G'day Darius Wey

I went and had a look at the E-ten M600 today and i was very impressed. My only qualm admittedly is the bulkiness of the actual device, much bigger than the Atom and i believe bigger and thicker than the XDA Mini itself.........hmmmm im not really sure anymore to tell you the truth....ill mm and rrr over it over the next few days.

I think the M600 looks great but we'll see......

I've not heard anything, but given Asia's proximity to Australia, I wouldn't be surprised if Dopod entered the Australian market. The Dopod 818 Pro, 838 and 900 are all likely to be strong performers here.
