I was interested in retractable earbuds for a while, but after having three pairs break in three days (not consecutive days, though), I gave up. I was fortunate enough to get some high-end earbuds that sound fantastic. I have to be careful about getting them tangled, but it's worth it.

I had the same experience: ordered a pair from the US and they broke within days.

Also, the big wheelie thing sits about halfway-down between your head and whatever the headphones are connected to. So they're convenient to put away, but when they're extended you've either got this heavy pendulum swinging about, or something clipped to your pocket making a big noose out of the slack cable.

When the retraction wheel broke, I was left with a pair of pretty mediocre headphones. (Don't bother trying to fix it, either, 'cause what's inside them is a big spring like one of those "snake in a peanut jar" novelty gags, and you just can't get it back in.)

Instead, I bought a pair of JVC Gumy headphones, which are really cheap, yet some of the best headphones I've owned. (I like full, clear treble, not just "boy racer car" thudding bass with an "AM radio" upper end, which I've had from a surprising number of more expensive pairs of headphones.)
