I'm brand new to PDAs, so please don't kill me. :)

I'm having a bit of trouble using the audio recording default that comes with the Dell Axim x51 I have. My question is simply: is there any way I can choose to record directly to removable media, such as an SD card? Every time I try to choose where to make a new recording, it only allows for folders on the device itself, and never outside of it.

Strangely, it detects the names of folders on the SD card. But when I choose them, it recreates the folder in My Documents and saves the file there.

If this isn't possible, know of any other good (preferably free) audio recording applications where I can get this functionality?

Any information is much appreciated. :)

I don't have that exact device, but you should be able to open the main Notes screen and then change the options to default to storage card recording.

You'll find that they keep the killing here on the Pocket PC Thoughts boards to a minimum.

Instead, you're more likely to encounter lots of well-informed help about any issue you could possibly encounter. That's been my experience.

So, welcome!

P.S. The only "newbie" behaviour that people tend to get narked off about is asking a question that's already been answered on the boards several times. So just a heads-up that before making a new post you should try to search through the archives for your topic. (Under the masthead above, select "Forums/Search".)

Brad's suggestion works. Open Notes, then tap Menu > Options, and modify the "Save to" field to your SD card.

Try NoteM: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=626

I can't recall if it's compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 though.

It's working great on my A06 x51v, even when recording to Flash ROM at 56 kbps. The only "problem" it has is that it doesn't display the filenames correctly in the file list (they should read Recording + a numeric postfix and not just R.):

Other than that, it works great.

If you are really serious about recording on your pocket pc, I would recommend you Resco Recorder which can be found here (http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/audiorecorder/default.asp)

That's a great call; the multiple format support is nice if you plan on sharing your recordings with others. But, if all you need is a way to record, say, lectures, I find the built-in recording system pretty adequate.

Thanks for all the help. Lectures is the main thing I'm using this for, but Resco Recorder looks to be what I'm really looking for. I love more customization. :)

Another option would be Vito Sound Expolorer. I have used both (Resco too) and i feel they are both great. Vito, i believe, adds some great editing tools too.

The Vito and the Resco apps both have their problems and strengths. I really recommend this article (http://pocketpcmag.com/blogs/menneisyys/112005SoundRecorderApps.asp) on these. (Will shortly update it to have extensive info on WM5 compatibility.)

Hey Menn - any updates on this for WM5 devices, yet?

I use a 4700 and use it for recording business meetings. There is a microphone used in these meetings (approx 120-175ppl) with speakers set to the left/right of stage. battery and storage are both important.
With regards to your review, great work. one thing that isn't listed, and is something to consider, is how the app 'files' the new recordings. how does it name them, will it put them in foldes, etc. I have tried both vito and resco, and i'm trying NoteM now - one of the things that NoteM doesn't do that I miss from the other 'paid' programs are the recording time counter, and file designation.

I use MP3, due to size and battery. any recommendations to use for this in my mtg environment?? Is there a way to update/exchange the codec that Resco uses with the one that Vito uses??

Thanks

Yeah, I've updated the article with WM5 compatibility info in January - I didn't announce this in this thread because I didn't want to flood.

NoteM does have an automatic file counter and you can also change the filename prefix in Options.

Nope. Resco uses a complex DLL (see for example this blog entry (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=new_tips_for_resco_audio_recorder_users&more=1) on the secrets of the Resco DLL's), totally incomatible with that of NoteM/Vito.

Well, that's a bummer

what would you recommend then, Vito for the better SQ, or Resco for the better UI?

Use Resco with Speex if you can, for example, get an external (for example, AA-based) recharger (Speex consumes considerably more battery than MP3).
