It's a shame how HP is rolling forth this update. There lack of showing confidence to their customer's has kept me away from buying the 4700 which I was all ready to do back in October. Because of this and other things I have observed from HP, I doubt I will buy another PDA from them again.

Apparently people (likely HP people and their friends) have already gotten their hands on a Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the 4700 and realizing some things are just not working properly after the fact.

This news means that may be HP is already beta-tested the hx4700s with Windows mobile 5. This is good news as some people on this site had lost their confidence on HP

Clearly the WM 5.0 upgrade will activate the previously hidden time travel module in the hx4700.

Lies...deceit...blasphemy.
If the WM5 update does come out...I am sure I will get it. Unless I get that x51v I want. :D

I'm sure they beta tested it a long time ago, back in August 2005 when they decided to delay the upgrade (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42472) for the hx4700.

Not necessarily. 8)

Even if they are no longer beta testing (which if they did stop, I'd be surprised), that doesn't mean they won't support the testers who still are running WM5 on their 4700's. That's probably what the driver is for. I imagine they (1) are still testing WM5 and will test right up until release and (2) any driver/patch updates for beta WM5 devices will be rolled into the official release version.
So, it looks like they plan on still releasing the update, at least for now.
Of course, it's also possible that WM5 reference was just a typo :D

Sir Darius, thats why I said that they are still beta testing. Had they got everything right, it would not have taken them so long to roll out a windows mobile 5 upgrade for hx4700

I wasn't implying that they had stopped beta testing. Rather, I was suggesting that they started a long time ago - well, that was what I thought needed addressing based on the wording of your previous comment.
In my opinion, I still think the upgrade is on track for a Spring release.

Considering that so many people complained about the WM5 upgrade for the Dell Axim and that WM5 isn't very good until at least AKU 1.5...I think HP is doing the right thing waiting to release a GOOD upgrade. I can verify that they've been working on it for a long time.

I don't regard the delay of the subject upgrade as a bad thing, provided it's been thoroughly tested prior to its release. The problems Dell users have experienced with their upgrades and the X-51's performance issues, and the delays in releasing WM5 upgrades announced by Fujitsu and others strongly suggest HP isn't alone in dealing with WM5 issues.
I'm looking forward to the upgrade and based on some of the beta tests that have been announced on PPC Thoughts previously concerning it - e.g., Unwired's report - am confident it will make an excellent WM device even better.
Here's a link to it already on a 4700 and a discusion that it will come out this month:
