Has anyone tried a CF Micro Drive in their Axim (x51v)? I'm taking a look at a Hitachi 6gig one perhaps.

Certain microdrives will work. I have a retail 4 GB Hitachi Microdrive and an unlocked 5 GB Seagate ST1 Microdrive pulled from my Rio Carbon, they both work great.

Stay away from OEM drives, also Seagate ST1 drives labeled with FW version 3.04 or higher will not work either. I recommend buying a retail Hitachi microdrive or the new Seagate ST2 microdrive.

Seagates new ST2 drives are available in 4 GB and 8 GB versions. Their going for much cheaper than the Hitachi drives, I've seen them selling online for as cheap as $115 and $200 respectively. Segates drives also perform better and have 16x as much cache as the Hitachi drives.

Here is a link for the 8 GB Drive

Do microdrives put much of a drain on battery life compared to CF cards when accessing memory. I'm trying to decide which to get. Is there much lag accessing them compared CF cards

As compared to cf cards, yes, they are huge battery drainers. And yes the lag is greater than accessing data on cf.

I would recommend you to use them to view movies only and not for storing programs for ur ppc

My expected uses were movies, pics and mp3's .... they are fast enough for movies?

Well yes, make sure u use TCPMP and enable 'microdrive' mode. That will help you to view movies properly. Also, it saves battery life.

Enjoy,

I Bought an 8GB Photodrive from Seagate and it works fine in my 51V, you can find them under $200 , Got mine from Buy.com. The Drive was an ST1 and it still works. Microdrive mode will buffer the movie to save the accessing to the drive

but do take very good care about the microdrive. They are highly prone to damages. In this forum, I've seen heck of people who whine about their microdrives which stoppoed working properly about 6 months of use or so.
