As I start going through the features... I'll relay what I find.

This is weird  I cant wait until the GSM one comes out, so I can ditch my Palm OS Treo.

I just picked mine up last night - still in shock at how cool the device is. I am bummed out about the memory, but have faith that PPC Techs will be able to fix that soon ;-)
I've also purchased the data plan - but was dissapointed to hear that the verizon push services do not support MSN or Hotmail "at this time". Odd - considering they made such a big deal reagrding the partnership - don't you think?
I hope they will address this soon...

I am supposed to get the Treo 700w next week.
Possmann - What memory issue are your referring to?

not enough availble memory - well for my taste that is. If you look at the other posts people have been pretty passionate about their disspaointment in the amount of availble memory in this device - still if you ask me - this is THE BEST form factor I ahve seen yet for a PPC phone.

actually - I haven't noticed that I'm not able to do anything due to memory constraints (yet)... It's a snappy phone - GREAT form factor (finally) and just plain cool. I've surfed a ton of places and not had any issues - while listending to several mp3's that I have on the device too - interesting...

I haven't noticed any problems w/ browsing sites either (yet?) .... and I went to some sites that have lots of pix as well as plug-ins.
I did notice you can buy a 2gb card for only $249 (or something like that!) ... wonder why they didn't include this in the device? Bought the wife an Ipod nano for xmas & it holds 4gb in a smaller device -- what gives Palm?!

They're two devices targeting two completely different markets. Producing and bundling a 2GB flash card would be an added expense (and might I add, a huge one) on Palm's part, and it just doesn't seem logical given the fact that a significant population of Treo 700w users will probably do fine with a smaller-capacity card.

D -- you are correct about the devices being two designed for completely different target markets .... I was simply pointing out that the nano is so small yet has a very large capacity .... thus, why didn't palm consider providing more mem?

You mean apart from the $250 bump in the price that would scare off most of the market?

Let's face it, we all know it doesn't cost these mfrs the retail prices they're charging for memory .... Again, iPod Nano offered a 2gb at $199 or a 4gb for only $50 bucks more! You can't argue the fact that they're losing money by selling twice as much mem on the same device for only $50?! LOL
I haven't DL'd any new apps on my Treo700 yet but I've only got 3.8MBs left avail w/ another 55MBs in storage mem. They could've offered a 1gb system -- how much more do you think it would've cost the mfr?

That's true - but part of Apple's strategy is to drive sales through iTunes, Palm has nothing to compare.
Second is that would you prefer a device with lots of memory, but at a higher price point, or a cheaper device that you can add on to when and if you want? Most of the guys here would prefer the former, but would the vast majority of users?
Third, I don't know about the current iPods, but earlier generations took off-the-shelf CF cards and Microdrives to supply their storage capacity - given the space constraints in a Pocket PC Phone would Palm be able to do the same to keep costs down? Remember, an iPod doesn't have a full-scale OS, no CDMA/GSM/Bluetooth/Wifi radios, camera, thumb-board, heat-generating processor, expansion slots, and a high capacity battery to power all this stuff.

H -- good points. And you're totally correct about Apple driving people to iTunes .... even worse, it wants to copy all of your current media from other sources & put it in their library doubling your mem useage! Ugh!!

And don't forget what might cost Apple a few dollars extra might not necessarily be the same for Palm. Memory architecture is different and so are the costs.

That's not a feature enabled by default. Go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General, and see if your "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" box is ticked. If you make sure that box is left blank, iTunes will not copy your current media to its own folder.

This is a great phone and a less then average Pocket PC.
The memory is definitely a problem if you are a "power user". I have also noticed a memory "Leak". I tried to open Arvale 2 and received a message that said that the "program needs at least 6 mb of RAM to run. Please close some applications". The problem was that didn't have anything open.
To run any graphic intense programs, you may need to soft reset first.
Disappointing because it is otherwise a great phone.

I bought my 700w last Friday and am also pretty happy. Being a current Ipaq 5400 owner which I don't use anymore because of no phone feature this phone completely solves that problem for me.
I do have a question though. Am I missing something or does this phone/pda lack WiFi????? I know it uses Ev Do, which by the way is pretty quick but I would like to sync wirelessly using active sync (file sync). Only interested in the file sync feature because I can use Verizons Wireless sync feature.
Also does anyone know of an AIM compatible program that works with 5.0??
I have also not run into mem. problems running 3 or 4 programs simultaneously and recieving phone calls.
It's GREAT to be back on this site again after an extended "leave". I must have known I'd be back because I never stopped my subscription. :D

Sadly, no Wi-Fi. And even if it had it, ActiveSync 4.x (which is a requirement for Windows Mobile 5.0) no longer supports sync over Wi-Fi. If you wanted to sync wirelessly, you'd have to rely on Bluetooth.
Also does anyone know of an AIM compatible program that works with 5.0??
There are a few multi-service IM programs available - namely, Agile Messenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html), imov (http://www.movsoftware.com/products/imov/imov.htm), and IM+ (http://www.shapeservices.com/eng/im/implus.php) which all support AIM. I've not tested their compatibility with Windows Mobile 5.0, but it should work.

Good to hear, and welcome back. :)
I am terribly confused now. TreoCentral says there is 128 MB memory (60MB user accessible) and Wireless. What on earth is in this thing, anyhow? I've ordered one from Palm, and might send it back if that's the case. Somebody who has one, please tell me. WiFi? Memory? What's going on here?

Wireless is such a broad term. The Treo 700w has Bluetooth and EV-DO, but no Wi-Fi. If you wanted to add Wi-Fi, you'd need a Wi-Fi SD card.
Despite the reported figures, the device has a user-accessible 63MB ROM available for file storage. It also has a user-accessible 25MB RAM with 10MB of that being used on start-up, so you only really have 15MB or so for program execution. If you want to expand the amount of storage on the device, you can insert an SD/MMC memory card. The amount of RAM, however, cannot be expanded unless a company such as Pocket PC Techs (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/) offers a RAM upgrade service.
Thanks, Darius. I want a big memory card, and I believe the only sd WiFi card with extra memory is about 128MB only. So, I'll forego WiFi. But that little bit of RAM kind of sucks. They don't go on about that on the Palm website. And where I live, EVDO is somewhere in the 23rd century.

Sandisk has a 256MB + Wi-Fi card, but of course, nothing in the order of 1GB/2GB. :(
They don't go on about that on the Palm website.
Hence, the mass confusion on enthusiast forums in the lead-up to the release of the device. It's only after the past couple of days have user reports come in confirming the amount of memory available on the device. Sigh.
I'll stick with a gig card, no WiFi, and cussing about the memory. The SanDisk card might work, but I understand that the Palm card is natively enabled and that thing sticks out. I don't think I want to go looking for drivers.

You can buy a 1GB SD card for less than $80 now, and the prices on all SD cards should continue to drop. You shouldn't buy you SD cards from Palm.
Note that the SD card slot in the Treo 700w is an SDIO, slot which means it can use more than just memory SD cards. There are SDIO cards for Wi-Fi (available from Palm), cameras, GPS receivers and a host of other uses.

The Treo 700w is a phone, PDA and palm-sized computer, not an iPod, though it should play music just as well. The only units the new Treo should really be compared to are the Treo 650, Samsung SCH-i730 and (Audiovox) VX6600. None of these are loaded with memory compared to other Pocket PCs.

Everybody else will have subspace communications by then
Well, I have my Treo. And EVDO is not only here, but amazingly here! I could hardly get phone connections before, and now I'm all over the place with EVDO. Sorry about the tiny memory, but it's working out so far.

I'm pretty sure you can use any WM5-compatible WiFi card with the 700w. One of the low-profile cards that stick out less than 5mm would be perfect for this device, as they would be protected by the phone antenna.

I read that the MP3/Music/Sound is a bit disappointing on the Treo, is that true? Although I am not looking for IPod type of sound, I would like my music to sound decent enough to listen to while walking the dog.
