I got my Axim x51v yesterday and I've spent the last 8 hrs figuring it out and breaking it in. I was surprised how fast the pages load on pocket ie when using wifi. It's seems faster than my laptop. It was also nice to see that some of my old software like flex wallet and Resco file explorer still work. I have to say that this is truly an amazing device. Awesome screen, really fast, and handwriting recognition is much improved. I'm writing this at home, on my Axim, using wifi. I'm in geek heaven.

Interesting. The X51v is one of the pocket pc's I've been considering, along with the X50v and the HP HX4705. What others have you used?
Problem is I've never owned or used a PDA, pocket PC or whatever they are properly called. Well, not really true. In 2001 I bought a used Palm IIIE on eBay but quickly lost interest in it due to various issues.
I've researched via google multiple times and the more I read the tougher it becomes as pro's and con's abound on every one of the pocket pc's.
I mainly like the wireless feature with the ability to connect to my DSL wireless equipped modem(I hope) so I can check email, forums and google infomation to my heart's content along with general web surfing. As it is now I use my aging, refurbished Dell Inspiron 7500 notebook pc for these activities.
So, it's cool that you are thrilled with your new Dell X51v. I hope I can find something that equally excites me enough to justify spending that much money. That's another problem.

I think there are at least two new models coming out in Jan. 2006. One from Acer and one from Fujitsu-Siemens. They look really nice, but as always, I wait for their reviews.

I've had 2 palms, a compaq, and my Toshiba GenioE. This is my first machine w/wifi and I used to surf the web with my Dell Inspiron 5000. It's still a fine laptop but it gets really hot and the batteries are 5 years old so they only last a few mins. I've been surfing mostly in landscape mode. I looked at the Sprint "apache" can't remember the # right now. I also looked at the Samsung I730. I read tons of reviews on the internet and concluded that the Dell w/a bluetooth keyboard would fit my needs the best. It's a near laptop replacement. Should have gotten a replacement or extended battery though. Wifi really uses up the batteries fast.

There are deals on Dells all the time. http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=85436 is a good guide to finding them. I paid less then $300 for my X50v (new, before the X51 came out) and similar deals are still available. The percentage-off deals on Dell's web site will stack with percentage-off coupons which will also stack with $35-off-$300 or $45-off-$400 coupons...not a bad deal.
I'd definitely suggest the X51 over the X50 though since the X51 is current technology and better supported, and also has twice as much memory!

yeah...that's really cool.
I've had my Dell Axim X51v for a couple of months now too.
The only really problem i've had with is that the battery runs down very low. It's weird. i set it on the lowest speed, bluetooth and wifi turned off, and a low backlight. One day, i didn't even use it and when i looked at it before i charged it @ night, the battery level was @ 64!!!!
And one time, the battery level was around 34 and an hour later, it was totally dead. (thank goodness for flash rom)
Can anyone tell me what's wrong. Should i just get a new battery from dell with the 2-year warranty i got?
Thanks

I've read of battery drain problems for x50v's that were flash with the WM5 os but no similar situations for x51v's. I would talk to a dell rep and probably get the battery switched out. Might as well use that warranty you paid for.

It might not be the battery. What programs do you have installed? And do you have any SD or CF cards installed?

I believe it's a common problem with x51v. I read about this on Aximsite several. I believe that there might be a solution, but I can't remember it right now. Anyway, check out www.aximsite.com for more information.
Though, congratulations!!!! Enjoy your new x51v!!!! :) 8)

The best deal I could find at Dell today for an X51V with free shipping and a discount coupon came to $374.20. I imagine that deal could be beat by someone else more skilled in finding discount coupons. It was about $32 more than the best deal I cound find on the popular auction site for a new X51v.

I paid the full $400 but I'm quite happy with the purchase. I just wish I paid for the extended battery, or at least an extra regular one. Hope you end up liking the purchase.

I realize you just received it on Dec 6th but have you had any problems installing any of your favorite applications or hardware problems yet? I was looking at CF card GPS's and didn't find one that included WM5 as a compatible OS.

I had a win2003 compatible version of PI that I didn't even bother to try. I'm sure it would be unstable as it is about 3 yrs old. My Resco file viewer 2003 is installed and works just fine. My flexwallet also works. My pocket controller does not work and I've descided not to test more of the old software until I have more time. (Probably the end of the month.). I know Dell sells GPS units for its winM5 devices. I would find out who their vendor is any try to get that. ie their bluetooth keyboard is by thinkoutside and is cheaper from third party vendors.

There is so much negative stuff on the forums about this PPC. Too bad really. All I would want to do with it is turn it on, easily connect to my wireless gateway (easily, as in without frustrating problems) and do all the same things I do with my desktop pc: email, internet forums, eBay, and such.
Is that asking too much?

I think it's easy to over-react from reading all the negative responses on the forums (after all, people only ever report their negative experiences, not their positive ones, right?).
The X51v is a solid device capable of performing many things. I think you should take the reported problems with a grain of salt. Not everyone has experienced it.
So, having said that, I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to play with your new toy. ;)

I love my x51v! I waited a year and a half to finally make a move and buy a device and I couldn't be happier. After readin all the reviews of all the devices I could find, the only trouble-free device I could find was pencil and paper, and the pencil needs occasional tweaking.
