When I try to navigate to a subdirectory in file explorer it just selects the directory instead of opening it. The same thing happens if I try to open a file from within an application. I've tried a soft reset to no avail.
Anybody got any ideas?

How are you attempting to open a file/folder? If you tap on it once, it should open it. However, if you tap-and-drag (even by the slightest amount), it will select it rather than open it.

I suggest you to try other file management program to replace the built in one, which is terrible. Several freebies, such as GSFinder and Total Commanders, are worth to try. Resco File Explorer is great too, but it's quite expensive.

I suggest you to try other file management program to replace the built in one, which is terrible. But it should work.

Even if those others work, they would be masking some deeper problem. If Darius's possibility isn't helping, I would hate to suggest it, but a hard reset may be in order. Sometimes the only way to get rid of such a system problem. If you've never done one, do ask about it and make sure you understand the ramifications and recovery options/steps.

Thanks Sven, I knw I am trying to open the directory properly so (thanks Darius) that is not the problem.
It is difficult to do a hard reset on an Ipaq rx3715 since the backup battery seems to be built in and I don't know how to overcome that.

It is difficult to do a hard reset on an Ipaq rx3715 since the backup battery seems to be built in and I don't know how to overcome that.

I'd also suggest a hard-reset.

However, it's not something which involves the removal of the backup battery. All OEMs have implemented a simple procedure which flashes the device back to factory settings. For the rx3715, I believe you need to hold the outer left and right buttons and insert the stylus tip into the soft-reset hole simultaneously. Before doing this, ensure you backup your important data. Once a hard reset is initiated, there's no turning back.

Hard resetting the rx3XXX series is not difficult.

Hold down the hardware keys 1 and 4 (that is, the keys on the extreme right and left on the device)

While continuing to hold, press the reset switch with the stylus.

Sometimes you have to hold down the reset switch for a few seconds, but the screen should go black and and the hard reset should commence.

Be sure to backup first! I use the HP backup software that comes with the device to backup to the storage card, then restore after the hard reset.

I managed a hard reset - thanks - and everything is fine until I restore my backup and I then get the same problem, I assume there must be a registry entry somewhere.
This is really bugging me now since I can't open any files.
Any other ideas please.

Yes, it most certainly sounds like a "dodgy" registry entry being restored each time. I suggest you perform another hard-reset, but this time, only restore your essential data (e.g. PIM data and important files). Leave your programs and system settings out of the restore operation. You'll have to manually install all your programs after, but at least it's better than sitting through this mess again.
