It was designed as an upgrade to its predecessor, the M500, and also to compete against some of HTC's well-known Phone Edition devices. Over the months, the hype started building up - with quad-band GSM, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, would it meet expectations as an all-in-one device? Eager to answer that question, I put it to the test! <!><br /><br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Blissful Roaming: Quad-Band GSM Support</b></span><br />The E-TEN M600 happens to be one of the very few Pocket PC Phone Edition devices to support quad-band GSM. What does this mean?<br /><br />GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is a digital technology used for the transmission of most mobile voice and data services as we know it. The number of GSM connections is steadily increasing - as of the third quarter of 2005, there were over 1.5 billion GSM subscribers worldwide. Despite the development and deployment of several 3G technologies, it's safe to say that GSM is here to stay as a basic means of mobile communication, at least for the foreseeable future. Most GSM networks operate at 900MHz/1800MHz, but there are a small number of networks which operate at 850MHz/1900MHz (primarily in North America). Looking at the past and present, most Pocket PC Phone Edition devices support tri-band GSM (900MHz/1800MHz/1900MHz), but thanks to the M600's support for the extra band (850MHz), it opens up a whole window of opportunities for roaming - this is something you'll value if you're a frequent traveller.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-01.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 1: The E-TEN M600 box and its contents.</i><br /><br /><span><b>But Wait, No EDGE?</b></span><br />In addition to the quad-band GSM support, the M600 supports GPRS Class B / Multislot Class 10 (4+1 or 3+2), which is able to achieve mobile data rates similar to a dial-up modem, but with the added benefit of operating wirelessly. Class B is an indication that the phone can connect to both GSM and GPRS services, but can only utilise one service at a time.<br /><br />That's all fine and dandy, but let's look at a shortcoming. The M600 lacks EDGE support. To fill you in on the techno-speak, EDGE is an abbreviation for Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. It's essentially a beefed-up version of GPRS: around three times the data capacity, three times the subscriber capacity, and has the benefit of being laid directly on top of an existing GSM network. There's a catch though - EDGE isn't nearly as widely available as one would expect. It's primarily used in parts of Europe and North America (a definitive list of operators can be found <a href="http://www.gsmworld.com/technology/edge/operators.shtml">here</a>). For someone like me who lives in the Asia Pacific, EDGE is sparse as 3G tends to dominate the region, so the M600's lack of EDGE is something I'm not deeply concerned about. However, if you happen to be with a carrier which offers EDGE, then you might want to keep this shortcoming in mind. But remember, this device has Wi-Fi, which I will talk about later. :)<br /><br />Enough about networks! Let's get down to the guts and glory of the device.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Hardware</b></span><br />First and foremost, the device does not feature an integrated keyboard (as seen in the i-mate K-JAM, Sprint PPC-6700, and i-mate JASJAR) nor an integrated keypad (as seen in the moboDA 3360, and Gigabyte Einstein). Input on this device is strictly screen-based. That places it in a similar category as the i-mate JAM and the O2 Xda Atom.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-02.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 2: The M600's System Information applet.</i><br /><br /><span><b>Specifications</b></span><br />So, let's get this out in the open right away - the M600 feels fast, and the benchmark results prove it. It features a Samsung S3C2440A 400MHz processor, not the common Intel XScale processors that most of you are familiar with, but that's no reason to disregard it. I've always been a fan of Samsung's mobile processors. My old HP iPAQ h1940 had one, and now this M600 has one - both devices are very snappy. The device also includes 64MB RAM (49.01MB usable), 128MB Flash ROM (81.56MB usable), an SDIO/SD/MMC slot, a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera (supporting 1280 x 960 pictures; 4x digital zoom) with flash, a 2.8" QVGA (240 x 320) 65K-colour LTPS TFT-LCD, and Windows Mobile 5.0. LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon) is actually one of the better LCD technologies available in the market. To my understanding, very few Pocket PCs in the market make use of this technology, so one of the M600's standout features is a screen with a significantly higher aperture ratio and thus increased brightness. I'll be discussing the screen a little later in the review.<br /><br />As stated earlier, the M600 supports quad-band GSM/GPRS. It also supports Bluetooth 1.2 and 802.11b Wi-Fi, with the added benefit of multi-mode wireless communications (meaning you can use GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi simultaneously), unlike Verizon, where rumour is they've crippled Wi-Fi on its phones.<br /><br /><span><b>What's in the Box?</b></span><br />There's more to the box than the M600. Here's what it contains:<li>E-TEN M600 Pocket PC Phone Edition;<br /><li>1440mAh Li-Ion battery;<br /><li>Cradle;<br /><li>Leather case;<br /><li>USB synchronisation cable;<br /><li>Compact AC adapter;<br /><li>Semi-adhesive screen protector;<br /><li>Stereo headset (which includes a microphone and volume controls);<br /><li>E-TEN's Getting Started CD (includes Microsoft Outlook 2002, ActiveSync 4.0, and an electronic manual).<br />My M600 was shipped to me before the release of ActiveSync 4.1. If you end up purchasing this device and still have ActiveSync 4.0 on the CD, I suggest <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx">heading over to Microsoft to download v4.1</a>. It solves many of v4.0's connection issues.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-03.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 3: ActiveSync 4.x - required for Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices.</i><br /><br /><span><b>M500 vs. M600: What's Changed?</b></span><br />So, let's perform a side-by-side comparison with the <a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/500.php">M500</a> (the M600's predecessor). To put it simply, the M600 is two steps forward and two steps back. Let's start with the positives, shall we?<br /><br />The M500, which was launched back in December 2004, had one major shortcoming. Much like the HTC Magician, it lacked integrated Wi-Fi. If you wanted to add the functionality, it would be delivered by way of an SDIO Wi-Fi card. Thankfully, they've been getting smaller and smaller over the past year, but it's still an accessory which occupies your SD slot. Unless you purchase an all-in-one memory/Wi-Fi card, you'll find yourself swapping cards more often that you'd like. The M600 solves this problem by including Wi-Fi, leaving your SD slot for the more important purpose of memory expansion.<br /><br />The M600 also has a new look. Alongside the silver-coloured buttons, the shell is completely black. I'm a huge fan of black as it goes well with just about anything, though your mileage may vary. The M600 (165g) is also five grams lighter than the M500 (170g) - not that you'd notice, anyway. ;)<br /><br />However, unlike the M500, the M600 no longer features USB-Host support. If you've ever owned or played with a USB-Host-enabled Pocket PC, you'll know just how awesome this feature is. In a nutshell, it allows you to access most USB peripherals connected to your device (for example, a USB thumb-drive, and even that funky iPod). It might not be an "essential" feature, especially for a Phone Edition, but it's certainly one that is handy to have around.<br /><br />Interestingly, the M600 no longer has an infrared (IR) port. Okay, so IR is a bit of an archaic technology - it's slower than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and requires line of sight, but I've always viewed IR to be one of those pain-free features enabling interoperability between different mobile devices (whether they be Windows Mobile-based or not). You don't even need to create a partnership!<br /><br />On a completely different note, the M600 ships with Windows Mobile 5.0, though this isn't something the M500 isn't capable of. By default, the M500 runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, but thanks to an <a href="http://www.etencorp.com/PressCenter/press.php?pid=45&tid=0">upgrade CD</a> which is scheduled to ship in December, the M500 will also be able to run Windows Mobile 5.0.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Size Comparison</b></span><br />The M600 measures in at 111.7mm x 60.7mm x 22mm. Pictures don't really do justice to the size of the device. You'll have to see it in the flesh to appreciate just how small it is. In fact, this is one of the few Pocket PC Phone Edition devices I feel comfortable holding next to my ear. Even an i-mate PDA2K (HTC Blue Angel) is too large for my liking, let alone an i-mate JASJAR (HTC Universal).<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-04.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 4: Comparison shot (angle) - from left, the Dell Axim X50v, HP iPAQ h1940, E-TEN M600, and the Nokia 6610i.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-05.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 5: Comparison shot (side) - from top, the Nokia 6610i, E-TEN M600, HP iPAQ h1940, and the Dell Axim X50v.</i><br /><br /><span><b>Meet the M600!</b></span><br />This is where I take you on a tour of the device. At first glance, you'll notice the M600 lacks any sort of antenna bulge. I hate any sort of protruding parts with a passion - so the M600 gets a donut point from me.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-06.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 6: A view of the M600's face.</i><br /><br />Apart from the top where the SD card inserts into, the M600's body has a matte finish. It's actually something I prefer since it makes the PDA less slippery to hold, and on a steaming hot day, you'll quickly realise how valuable this is. Hairline scratches also tend to be less visible on a matte body. From the front, there are two multi-colour LED indicators. There is one situated in the top-left corner - it flashes blue when Bluetooth is active and orange when Wi-Fi is active. The other indicator is situated in the top-right corner - it is constantly red whilst charging, turns off when the battery is fully charged, and flashes red when the battery is low on juice. Alternatively, it flashes green when the GSM component of the phone is active (even when the device is in standby mode), and flashes orange if the device requires your attention (for example, a reminder or even an error message). Above the E-TEN logo is the earpiece (which is adequately loud, unlike some devices I have tried before), and below the 2.8" screen are some of the hardware buttons. Starting from the bottom, the M600 has the standard call buttons, and just above that are the Contacts and Home buttons (or M-Desk, which I'll discuss later). Toward the centre is the D-pad. It's firm to press and has a similar design to that of the HP iPAQ h1940. Due to the button arrangement, it's probably not ideal for gaming, but being a phone, I don't see this as being a priority. One caveat to all this - with the M600 running Windows Mobile 5.0, you'd expect soft key buttons, wouldn't you? Guess what? There are none. Much like Dell's upgrade from the X50 series to the X51 series, E-TEN has done the same in moving from the M500 to M600. There are no noticeable structural changes to the button arrangement, so you'll have to tap on the screen with your thumb or the stylus in order to use the soft keys. It's a shame though since there is quite a bit of empty space between the top row of buttons and the screen.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-07.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 7: From the left side, the M600 offers several more buttons.</i><br /><br />Turning the device 90°, you'll notice a further set of buttons on the left side. Toward the top end of the device, there's the Camera button (which has a dual-purpose: loading the Camera application and taking pictures); just below it is the volume slider, multi-purpose button (commonly assigned to the bundled Voice Commander application), and the indented, stylus-dependent soft-reset button. Unfortunately, only the Contacts, Home, Camera and multi-purpose buttons are assignable. It would have been nice to have the volume slider assignable as a jog dial. Unlike some Pocket PCs, none of the M600's buttons are backlit, effectively making night use a tad difficult if you place a great reliance on the hardware buttons. If you're more of a screen-only user, like me, then this shortcoming won't be an issue for you.<br /><br />Also of note is a 2.5mm headphone jack (which supports audio in and out) - it's protected by a rubber cap that is attached to the device.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-08.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 8: Views of the M600 from the top (above) and the bottom (below). Note the SDIO slot, power button, sync connector, microphone, and stylus.</i><br /><br />Looking at the device from the top, you'll notice the power button and the SD/MMC slot (supporting SDIO accessories). This is where I think the M600 goes one up on some of the newer Pocket PC Phone Edition devices out there, which all use miniSD. SD has a couple of benefits over miniSD: (1) higher capacity, and (2) lower cost. Heck, I could even throw in a third benefit and mention that the vast majority of you probably already have SD cards and would hate to fork out the extra cash just to accessorise a mini-SD-equipped Pocket PC. From the moment I acquired the M600, I had already saved around $70 by avoiding that 1GB miniSD purchase.<br /><br />One other point worth mentioning is that the SD slot is embedded well within the device. It may be a little hard to remove the SD card if you're not the sort of person with long fingernails, but there's an upside to this seemingly-annoying design. It's not as easy to 'accidentally' eject the SD card, and I'm sure it helps prevent your SD card from flying across the room if you were to drop the device. For obvious reasons, I'm not game enough to drop my M600, so I'll happily keep that point as an assumption.<br /><br />The bottom of the device contains E-TEN's own synchronisation connector, microphone and stylus. It's a bit awkward having the stylus at the bottom rather than the top. First off, it takes a while to get used to. For the first few days, I found myself reaching for the top of the device without thought, until those gears in my head started to kick in for me to remember that the stylus was now situated at the bottom. Then there's also the worry that the stylus might slip out. Gravity clearly isn't your friend in cases like this, but I think E-TEN took this into consideration by making sure that the stylus would be locked in the device securely. It's always reassuring feeling that solid 'click' as you insert the stylus back into the device.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-09.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 9: The M600 stylus in its compact form (above) and in its fully extended form (below).</i><br /><br />While on the topic of the stylus, let's talk about its design. Although it employs a telescopic design, it automatically compacts down as you insert the stylus into the device, and extends out as you remove it. Overall, the stylus is built very well - it's of the right length, weight and thickness, and I certainly had no issues using it to write on the screen.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-10.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 10: The rear of the M600. Note the 1.3-megapixel camera (with flash) and the speaker adjacent to it.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-11.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 11: The rear of the M600 with the battery cover removed.</i><br /><br />Looking at the rear of the M600, you'll notice the 1.3-megapixel camera, preview mirror and flash situated in the top-right corner. For a camera-phone, the flash is relatively bright, but probably not bright enough to make a half-decent night shot. However, I'll talk about the camera quality a little later. Situated just below the camera is the speaker. This is different to the one used for phone conversations (unless you enable the speakerphone option). While it makes sense to have this main speaker and the earpiece speaker as two separate components (primarily so you don't blow your eardrum if a loud alarm were to go off), I had issues with the loudness of audio if the device was resting against the palm of my hand or a table. Obviously, when you have something obstructing the speaker, it isn't going to be as loud as it would be when unobstructed. Having said that, it's not a huge dilemma. Even with the speaker obstructed, the sound emanating from it is still very audible.<br /><br />With the battery cover removed, you'll notice the SIM card slot and the battery holder (which includes a lock switch). The M600 also includes a backup battery, though evidently not visible.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Screen</b></span><br />This is where the M600 shines, thanks to its LTPS TFT-LCD. As I discussed earlier, the benefit of LTPS technology was a higher aperture ratio and thus increased brightness. The M600's screen measures in at 2.8" and is rated at QVGA (240 x 320).<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-12.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-12s.jpg" /></a><br /><i>Figure 12: From left, the Dell Axim X50v, E-TEN M600, and the HP iPAQ h1940 - all set at maximum brightness. Background lighting conditions were dull, and all three Pocket PCs were configured to display Word Mobile (white background; some black text). Click the image above for a larger version (1024 x 512).</i><br /><br />In total, there are eleven brightness settings on the M600.<br /><br />The next three images provide some level of comparison in colour reproduction. Overall, the M600's screen excels - whether it displays red, green, or blue. Despite the awesome VGA resolution of the Axim X50v, it appears very washed out compared to the M600, and even the aging iPAQ h1940. I should point out that these four images (one above, three below) aren't entirely accurate (especially Figure 12) - I feel that these images portray the M600's screen as over-exposed when it actually isn't. With the device in-hand, you'll soon realise that the screen's level of brightness, contrast and saturation is simply spot on. Of course, due to the QVGA resolution, images and text won't appear as sharp as they would on a VGA device (such as the Axim X50v).<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-13.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-13s.jpg" /></a><br /><i>Figure 13: From left, the Dell Axim X50v, E-TEN M600, and the HP iPAQ h1940 - all set at maximum brightness. Click the image above for a larger version (1024 x 512).</i><br /><br /><span><b>Cradle</b></span><br />The M600 cradle, which is rated at 5V/2A, is uniquely circular with a diameter of around ten centimetres. It's made out of a tough, durable plastic, and it feels light - in fact, almost too light (you would almost mistaken it for a Frisbee). But with rubber grips on the bottom, it helps prevent the cradle from sliding around on the table.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-16.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 16: The M600 cradle, with the device and stylus inserted into it. A touch of class. A tad dusty too. ;)</i><br /><br />The cradle has the added benefit of being able to charge a second battery, even with the M600 docked. Adjacent to it is a charging LED indicator (it's red whilst charging; green when fully charged). Interestingly, there is an indentation within this LED indicator for you to store your stylus. With the stylus situated at the bottom of the device, it makes sense to have it accessible separately whilst the M600 is docked.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-17.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 17: The M600 synchronisation cable (which can be connected to the cradle or directly into the device) and AC adapter (which plugs into the synchronisation cable). Note the synchronisation cable alone can be used to charge the device.</i><br /><br />Toward the rear of the cradle is a connector for the USB-synchronisation cable and a USB-Host port. Funnily enough, because the M600 no longer supports USB-Host, this port is a bit redundant. However, any M500 inserted into this cradle will be able to make use of it.<br /><br /><span><b>Case</b></span><br />The leather belt-clip case that's bundled with the M600 is well-constructed. In fact, it's almost what the i-mate SP5m case should have been (you can read more about that case in Mike Temporale's review <a href="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,9640">over at our sister site, Smartphone Thoughts</a>). The M600 fits snugly within the case as can be seen in Figure 19. The case makes use of a magnetic closure mechanism - it's rather strong, so you won't have to worry about the device falling out at odd angles.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-18.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 18: An empty M600 case, closed.</i><br /><br />The case also includes a lanyard - perfect for... those dangling occasions.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-19.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 19: A shot of the M600 within the case. Note the firm fit.</i><br /><br />Evidently, the case doesn't allow for 'in-case' use, though I don't have a real problem with this. I'd much rather use my Pocket PC as-is than have it next to my ear with a flap of leather hanging off it.<br /><br />And remember how I said black goes well with just about anything? Here's a good example. ;)<br /><br /><span><b>Headset</b></span><br />Bundled with the M600 is a 2.5mm stereo headset, complete with a clip, microphone, a call button and a volume dial. It's a multi-purpose headset designed for hands-free phone operation and casual music listening. Surprisingly, the M600's headset delivers better-than-expected audio quality over most other generic headsets. The bass and treble response is rather decent, though I'm sure some sort of DSP-driven enhancement, which the M600 lacks by default, would push it to its full potential. Audio through the headset is adequately loud; enough to shut out any background noise if need be.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-20.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 20: The stereo headset connected to the M600.</i><br /><br />If you're wanting to use a set of headphones with the M600, you may find that when coupled with certain 3.5mm to 2.5mm stereo adapters, it might not work as expected (with sound being heard in one ear only). Basically, it all boils down to the pinout configuration of the device. The M600's 2.5mm stereo/microphone jack was designed with headsets in mind to allow greater headset interoperability. Naturally, this comes at the cost of lost headphone interoperability, but this is a Pocket PC Phone Edition after all - so, I wouldn't really consider this a design flaw. i-mate K-JAM users may find themselves to be in the same boat, so the only way around this is to purchase a separate 3.5mm to 2.5mm stereo adapter designed for this particular class of device. <a href="http://www.pocketpctechs.com/">Pocket PC Techs</a> offers a great selection.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Software</b></span><br />Of course, a piece of hardware is only as good as the software on it, and thankfully, E-TEN hasn't let itself down on this point.<br /><br /><span><b>Phone-Related Enhancements in Windows Mobile 5.0</b></span><br />This portion of the review covers basic details on the phone-related enhancements of Windows Mobile 5.0. It should target: (1) those who have yet to find out what a Phone Edition version of Windows Mobile is all about, and (2) those who currently use an older Pocket PC Phone Edition but are interested in seeing what Windows Mobile 5.0 has to offer. <br /><br />At first glance, you'll notice a few different elements in a Phone Edition. There's a dynamic signal icon situated in the task bar - dynamic, meaning that the number of bars changes according to signal strength. Tapping the icon opens a service information pop-up balloon. If you're connected to the internet via GPRS, you might also notice a 'G' icon (not shown in Figure 21).<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-21.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 21: Windows Mobile's service information pop-up balloon.</i><br /><br />On the same screen, you'll notice Windows Mobile 5.0's addition of soft keys for the Pocket PC (making it similar to the Smartphone platform, but with the added benefit of touch screen support). By default, they are assigned to Phone and Contacts (or Calendar and Contacts if you're using a non-converged device). Some people have argued that it greatly enhances one-handed navigation. Some have argued otherwise. Whatever the case, I'm a firm believer of this one-handed philosophy. I've used Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition devices before and that was the cake. Windows Mobile 5.0's inclusion of soft keys is the icing (double-layered and extra sugary - apologies to the diabetics amongst us). One-handed dialing and contact browsing has never been easier.<br /><br />So, the Phone application is where it all happens - dialing, answering calls, wading through your call history, and so on. If you don't mind putting thumb to screen, then this is a clear example where one-handed navigation actually works. The keypad is large enough for most thumbs, and the Talk/End button is conveniently placed. Of course, you can use the hardware buttons to answer and end calls as well. You'll notice that with the Phone application active, the two soft keys change. They are now Contacts and Menu. I'll discuss the former when I delve into the much-improved Outlook Mobile. The Menu soft key allows you to flip through a multitude of options - Hold, Mute, Turn Speakerphone On, Turns Hands-free on, and Conference (these are all disabled by default; you can enable them once you're in a call). There's also View Contact, Create Note, Call History, Speed Dial, and Options. It's great having the option to create a quick note during a call - obviously a bit hard with the device next to your ear, but if you're using a headset (whether it be wired or Bluetooth-based) or the speakerphone, you'll find such a feature to be rather valuable. By default, the call history shows a list of all incoming, outgoing and missed calls. There is a filter option in the menu that lets you sort between the three categories, or even by caller. Finally, the speed dial is a feature that most of you should be aware of. Most phones (not just Windows Mobile-based) offer this feature. After assigning a contact to a particular keypad number, you only need to tap and hold on that particular number to make the call. Two-digit speed dialing is also supported.<br /><br />E-TEN happens to offer a unique dialer skin, which can be seen in Figure 22. They also include a Today theme that goes hand-in-hand with this dialer skin.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-22.gif" /><br /><i>Figure 22: Phone-related portions of Windows Mobile 5.0 can be customised by the OEM. Compare this to Figure 23.</i><br /><br />Once you're in a call, you'll notice the keypad 'shrinks down' to leave six buttons - Call History, Mute, Hold, Note, Contacts and Talk/End (see Figure 24). This is unlike how Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition acted where the keypad would remain on-screen. A couple of my colleagues dislike this new feature of Windows Mobile 5.0, but I'm not particularly bothered by it. The keypad is only one tap away since it's assigned to the left soft key during a call.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-23.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 23: The default (non-customised) version of Windows Mobile 5.0's Dialer application.</i><br /><br />What I like about Pocket PC Phone Edition devices is the fact that wireless communications are still active (except Wi-Fi) even when the device is in standby mode, thus greatly enhancing battery life. If there is an incoming call or message whilst the device is in standby, you will still be notified (via an alarm, ring and/or vibration). Wish to have a Bluetooth headset connected to your device? That can be maintained in standby mode too.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-24.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 24: Windows Mobile 5.0 'shrinks' the keypad down during a call.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-25.gif" /><br /><i>Figure 25: Customising your phone - note the auto-answer and GSM band selection options. And yes, I've done the geek thing by using 24's CTU ringtone. ;)</i><br /><br />Perhaps one of the biggest changes to Windows Mobile 5.0 is a greatly-enhanced Contacts view in Outlook Mobile. Tapping on a contact opens up a window similar to Figure 26. Unlike previous versions of Windows Mobile, contacts details are nicely categorised, and the added bonus of having a Phone Edition device is that tapping on any one of these fields will initiate that function (for example, call mobile, call home, send text message, and so on). The addition of icons on the left also gives the interface a bit of a facelift.<br /><br />Windows Mobile 5.0 now supports the display and synchronisation of contact photos - even better when you have an integrated camera like that of the M600. I don't have any examples to show (mainly because I'm too lazy to be taking hundreds of photos and manually assign them to each and every one of my contacts), but here's an <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/_assets/images/press/NewLook/ContactWithPicturePPC.jpg">example picture</a> being hosted at Microsoft. With Caller ID enabled, the Phone application will even display that person's picture when he/she is calling you.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-26.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 26: The all-new Contacts view in Windows Mobile 5.0. No censorship here - your eyes are deceiving you. Go see an optometrist.</i><br /><br />Next on the list is the Messaging application, which is the hub of all SMS, MMS and e-mail messages. Like Contacts, it too has received an interface revamp with support for contact photos as well.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-27.gif" /><br /><i>Figure 27: Messaging in Windows Mobile 5.0.</i><br /><br />When you receive an SMS message, you'll have the option of replying to it, deleting it, dismissing it, saving it as read, and even calling the sender. Note the pop-up balloon which appears at the bottom of the screen, and the friendly message icon which appears in the taskbar.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-28.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 28: What you will see when you receive an SMS message.</i><br /><br />If you're one of those people who greatly rely on Microsoft's MSN services and fancy the idea of staying 'always connected', then you'll probably value the inclusion of Pocket MSN. It can be accessed from the Programs menu or directly from the Pocket MSN Today screen plug-in.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-29.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 29: Pocket MSN integrates Hotmail, Messenger, and MSN Mobile Home (news, weather, reviews, stocks and more) in one easy-to-use interface.</i><br /><br />Windows Mobile 5.0's new 'persistent storage' feature now moves all data from RAM to non-volatile flash ROM. The upside to this is that battery depletion will no longer nuke all your data. Granted, flash ROM is slower, but I haven't noticed any speed-related problems whilst using my M600. In all honesty, it feels just as snappy as my Windows Mobile 2003 devices.<br /><br />There are also many 'under-the-hood' phone-related changes in Windows Mobile 5.0 aimed at enhancing sound quality, reducing drop-out rates, including new APIs for developers, and so on.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Bundled Applications</b></span><br />E-TEN managed to pack a wealthy collection of applications and plug-ins into the M600, which for the most part, requires manual installation when you first set up the device (courtesy of E-TEN's unified installer, <b>Extra Application Installer</b> - see Figure 30). I'm a huge fan of such a setup because it offers the user the freedom to install <i>only</i> what he/she needs.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-30.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 30: E-TEN's 'Extra Application Installer'.</i><br /><br />There are a few exceptions: some essential plug-ins are already installed, though it's worth mentioning that you can disable most of these as you see fit.<br /><br />The first is <a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=9"><b>Quick Link</b></a> - a Today plug-in that offers quick access to your favourite programs. It supports up to twenty-seven icons with support for multiple lines and a toggle between large and small icons. Another plug-in, known unoriginally as the <a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=10"><b>Battery Meter</b></a>, sits in the taskbar and displays the state of the battery.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-31.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 31: The Today screen, showing Quick Link and the Battery Meter.</i><br /><br />Within the Phone application are four plug-ins. Again, these can be disabled if you wish:<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=17"><b>Zoom SMS:</b></a> It does what it says, and it's great if you're the sort of person who loathes small text. It also includes a set of buttons - Back, Forward, Reply, Call and Delete.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=16"><b>Call Filter:</b></a> Someone stalking you? This is where Call Filter becomes your best friend. You can add different contacts to an Allow List and/or Block List, as well as assign different functions to each list.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=18"><b>Scenarios:</b></a> Better known as Profiles, this plug-in sits in the system tray and allows you to enable and configure different profiles - General, Meeting, Outdoor, and Silent. If you use or have used a Nokia phone before, then this will all be very familiar to you.<br /><li><b>New Dialer:</b> This enables and disables the E-TEN-customised dialer skin. See Figure 22 for an example.<br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-32.gif" /><br /><i>Figure 32: The Camera application offers more features than you can poke a stick at. Note there is also an indicator which displays the number of pictures that can be stored on the selected medium (main memory or the SD/MMC card).</i><br /><br />The Camera button launches the <a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=5"><b>Camera</b></a> application. Alternatively, you can use the Camera shortcut located in the Multimedia folder in Programs. It's a feature-rich application which offers extensive customisation. The large icons allow you to use your thumb to change the different settings - even more comfortable when using the device in landscape mode.<br /><br />E-TEN's Camera application is probably one of the better ones I've seen bundled with any Pocket PC. It supports the capturing of photos and the recording of videos. In the camera mode, you can modify the capture settings (normal, timer, and portrait), orientation (portrait or landscape), flash, date, saving path (\My Documents or \SDMMC), wizard mode, special effects (normal, negative, greyness, retrospective, and mirror), frames, format settings (BMP or JPG), dimensions (1280 x 960, 640 x 480, 320 x 240, and 176 x 144), white balance (auto, incandescence, fluorescence, sunshine, shadow, cloudy, and night), self-timer (between three, five, seven, and ten seconds), and continuous shutter. But it doesn't stop there. Switch over to the video mode, and you can again modify the white balance, dimensions (320 x 240, 176 x 144, and 128 x 96), format settings (3GP only), quality settings (high, medium, and low), audio (enable or disable), special effects, saving path, and wizard mode.<br /><br />Once you capture an image or video, you're presented with the option of deleting it, or linking it to Messaging (to send as an e-mail), Multimedia Manager (for sorting), MMS Composer (to send as an MMS message), Image Maker, and Image Wizard (for further editing). E-TEN has done a good job at integrating all of its services. I'll provide some example pictures taken from the camera later in the review (but to put it simply, the M600 has a standard quality camera (what I'd expect from most camera-enabled Pocket PCs); obviously, it's not designed to replace a dedicated digital camera, but it's still handy to have around for a few quick snapshots here and there).<br /><br />The M600 also supports 4x digital zoom. Conveniently, the volume slider button controls this.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-33.gif" /><br /><i>Figure 33: E-TEN's Image Wizard and Image Maker applications.</i><br /><br />Looking at some of the other major applications - namely, the ones that require installation at startup.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=15"><b>Speed Dial:</b></a> This is an extended version of the speed dial feature already included in Windows Mobile 5.0, supporting two different modes, Index Dial and Frequency Dial. I hardly ever use this application, primarily because I hardly speed dial in the first place, but for those of you who greatly rely on it, this application will prove invaluable.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=13"><b>SIM Toolkit:</b></a> My SIM card wasn't compatible with this application, so I wasn't able to test it out. However, to my understanding, it's very similar to other SIM managers included in most other Pocket PC Phone Edition devices.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=3"><b>Image Wizard:</b></a> This wizard-based application offers a five-step process for quick-editing your images. You can add a frame, text, scribbles, and special effects. If you wish to take it one step further, you can use the more advanced Image Maker.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=2"><b>Image Maker:</b></a> In many ways, I'd label this a mobile version of Microsoft Paint. All the basic tools are there, but if you're wanting something more advanced, then there are third-party alternatives such as <a href="http://www.conduits.com/products/artist/">Conduits Pocket Artist</a>.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=4"><b>Multimedia Manager:</b></a> This is a simple browser supporting thumbnails and slideshows. Figure 34 shows this.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=1"><b>Voice Commander:</b></a> This is based on <a href="http://www.cyberon.com.tw/download.htm">Voice Commander by Cyberon</a> - it's a good package offering similar features to Microsoft Voice Command, and it even works well with my Australian accent. The options page allows you to further train the voice recognition as you see fit.<br /><li><a href="http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/software.php?sid=11"><b>M-Desk:</b></a> As E-TEN's all-in-one program launcher, M-Desk supports theme-enhanced tabs, multiple system indicators, quick shortcuts for modifying the screen orientation, and a lot more. If you're not happy with Windows Mobile's default Programs interface, then M-Desk offers a very good alternative. With this installed, the M600 automatically assigns M-Desk to the Home button. If you wish to use that button for something else, you can always open up Windows Mobile's Settings page and reassign it.<br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-34.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 34: E-TEN's Multimedia Manager offers large thumbnails for quick previewing media files.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-35.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 35: E-TEN's M-Desk program launcher is a good alternative to the default Programs interface of Windows Mobile.</i><br /><br />In addition, there are some minor applets such as Add Ringtone, CSD Type (for modem simulation), and Microphone (for adjusting audio-in settings during phone conversations, voice recordings, and when using Bluetooth headsets).<br /><br />The M600 also includes Skype, but my particular ROM didn't have it, primarily because there are some stability issues with the current version of Skype and Windows Mobile 5.0. However, the upcoming Skype 1.2 for Pocket PC should be released shortly and will be bundled on all M600 devices. The Samsung S3C2440A 400MHz processor is certainly fast enough to support it.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Performance</b></span><br />From the start of the review, I said the device was snappy. Here's the proof.<br /><br /><span><b>Memory (RAM)</b></span><br />Under Windows Mobile 5.0's 'persistent storage' model, RAM is used purely for program execution, whilst flash ROM is used for data storage. Now, at the time I received my M600, I had heard some pretty shocking stories about the i-mate JASJAR chewing up RAM unexpectedly, so I thought I'd put the M600 to the test to see if it was in the same boat. Of the 64MB RAM in the M600, 49.01MB is usable. At the time, plug-ins I had running on my Today screen were Date, Owner Information, Messaging, Spb Diary, Pocket MSN, and Device Lock. That load, plus the requirements to keep Windows Mobile 5.0 running, had 17.67MB of RAM being consumed on startup, leaving 31.34MB for use.<br /><br />With that in mind, I decided to put the device under some real pressure. Being the raging multi-tasker that I am, I turned on Wi-Fi and launched E-TEN's Wireless Manager, Internet Explorer Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, Word Mobile, Resco Explorer 2005, Calendar, and Contacts. After leaving all applications open for thirty minutes and using Internet Explorer Mobile to browse some of my favourite sites, the Memory applet stated that 21.80MB is in use. That huge load had used a mere 4.13MB of RAM, quite unlike that of the JASJAR, and even an Axim X51v I played around with last week.<br /><br /><span><b>Wireless (Phone, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi)</b></span><br />Where I live, major centres tend to have excellent GSM coverage, so in using the M600, I've had zero problems with signal dropout. In fact, 99% of the time, I enjoy full signal strength. Overall, voice quality is excellent - the earpiece speaker is definitely loud enough for conversations.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-36.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 36: The Wireless Manager application is very simple to use. Icons on the left enable and disable each form of wireless communication, whilst icons on the right configures each one.</i><br /><br />E-TEN's Wireless Manager, which can be launched via the Today screen, is as easy to use as it appears. The M600 features Bluetooth 1.2 (Class 2), supporting roughly ten metres. It uses an E-TEN-customised version of the Microsoft Bluetooth stack (with support for AKU 1.1), which visually, looks very similar to the Widcomm stack, supporting most of the well-known services that most of you are familiar with (headset partnerships, device browsing, ActiveSync via Bluetooth, file transfers, and business card exchanges).<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-37.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 37: E-TEN M600 + Bluetooth Headset: 100% Geek.</i><br /><br />The M600's 802.11b Wi-Fi is accompanied by WLAN Utility. Thanks to the speed improvements in Internet Explorer Mobile, browsing feels fast. Who needs EDGE when you have Wi-Fi? ;)<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-38.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 38: The WLAN Utility display key network details and allows you to configure certain aspects of Wi-Fi.</i><br /><br /><span><b>Camera</b></span><br />I stated earlier that the image quality produced by the M600's camera was what I expected from any camera-enabled Pocket PC - nothing great, yet nothing shabby. I've included a couple of example pictures below. Both are 960 x 1280 when enlarged.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-39.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-39s.jpg" /></a><br /><i>Figure 39: An outdoor picture of a lemon tree, taken on a bright, sunny day with some shade cover being provided by surrounding trees. Click the image above for a larger version (960 x 1280).</i><br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-40.jpg"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-40s.jpg" /></a><br /><i>Figure 40: Another outdoor picture, taken late afternoon. Click the image above for a larger version (960 x 1280).</i><br /><br /><span><b>Battery Life</b></span><br />In my opinion, benchmarking Pocket PC Phone Edition devices for battery life has little value. Usage patterns vary considerably from person to person, so I feel it's best if I deliver an account of my daily usage patterns.<br /><br />On the phone side of things, I might talk for one to two hours and send a couple of SMS messages each day. Bluetooth might be running for half a day (even in standby) as my Bluetooth headset is connected to the device. On the PDA side of things, I might have Wi-Fi turned on, browse the internet and check my e-mail for around an hour a day. I tend to use the device to listen to music for around two hours a day. I ritualistically use Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, Spb Finance, Resco File Explorer, FlexWallet 2006 and Resco Photo Viewer - altogether totaling another one to two hours. Considering the aforementioned, I tend to have roughly 60% of battery power left (an average figure I arrived at after a week of solid testing).<br /><br />The M600 includes a 1440mAh Li-Ion battery. The official E-TEN specifications sheet states that the battery can get you through 3.5-4.0 hours of talk time, 150-200 hours of standby time, and 10-15 hours of standard Pocket PC usage. In light of my usage patterns, I'd say that these figures don't lie.<br /><br />Overall, I'm very happy with the M600's battery life. Based on my usage patterns, I've managed to go for two to three days without worrying about charging the battery. In fact, all this time, I've been using the M600 at medium brightness. Given the superb quality of the LTPS TFT-LCD, I have no hesitation in tuning it down to the second lowest setting over the next week to see how battery life works out.<br /><PAGEBREAK><br /><span><b>Benchmarks</b></span><br />I put the M600 through the most relevant tests of <a href="http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/benchmark/?en">Spb Benchmark</a> and compared it to other devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 - namely, the Dell Axim X50v (upgraded to Windows Mobile 5.0) and the i-mate JASJAR.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-41.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 41: This is the overall index provided by Spb Benchmark. I've said it time and time again - the M600 feels fast, and these results prove it. 'Power' devices such as the i-mate JASJAR and Dell Axim X50v can only wonder what went wrong.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-42.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 42: This is the CPU index. Nothing surprising here - comparatively, the M600 features a 400MHz processor, whilst the JASJAR and X50v feature 520MHz and 624MHz processors respectively. The take-home message here is the M600's Samsung processor isn't slow, contrary to rumours that Samsung's processors do not live up to Intel's. In case you're wondering how it performs in TCPMP, I can assure you that video playback is very smooth.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-43.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 43: The file system index shows that on an overall basis, the M600 performs better at reading and writing files than the X50v and JASJAR.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-44.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 44: Take this with a grain of salt. It appears that Spb Benchmark still hasn't been optimised for the X50v/X51v's Intel 2700G GPU. However, as far as basic graphical sub-system performance goes, the M600 does a good job.</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-45.jpg" /><br /><i>Figure 45: When it comes to the performance of common Pocket PC applications, the M600 clearly shines. In this test, Spb Benchmark puts it through vigorous operations in Internet Explorer Mobile, Word Mobile, and File Explorer.</i><br /><br /><span><b>Availability</b></span><br />A Chinese version of the M600 was released in Taiwan a couple of weeks ago. If you're in the Asian region, you should be able to pick one up through local resellers. An English version of the M600 is planned for release on November 28; Shaston SA is distributing it throughout Europe and the Middle East, and is pricing it at €557 (without VAT). It has also been said that TORQ, the U.S. supplier of E-TEN's devices, will be releasing this unit as the P100w. No word yet on their release date or price.<br /><br /><span><b>Conclusions</b></span><br />The E-TEN M600 is one cool Pocket PC Phone Edition that I would hate to be without. With quad-band GSM/GPRS support, Bluetooth 1.2, 802.11b Wi-Fi, and E-TEN's value-added applications, the M600 offers plenty of bang for buck. It's a well-built Pocket PC that is relatively lightweight and comfortable to hold. Despite a few minor irks, the M600 triumphs with its excellent LTPS TFT-LCD, strong all-round performance, and good battery life.<br /><br /><i>Darius Wey loves technology! This phone seems to be a complete package. IMO, this has the potential to surpass the sales of o2 atom because it excels over it in some areas.

The best part is that it makes the o2 exec tastes its dust in benchmark test(tho it may be due to exec's VGA display)

Love it and want it !!

No infrared? Are they serious? Do they assume all Pocket PCs have bluetooth file transfer capabilities? They don't. :|

Excellent review! That must have taken quite a bit of time. I'm really surprised by the brightness of the screen and the M600's overall performance.

This is a rockin' device that is about as close to perfect for my needs as I can hope for right now. If it only had EDGE, I'd be in Heaven! Now that San Francisco is going to have WiFi everywhere for free, it won't be as much an issue.

I just hope the price stays around $650.

I wonder though, how often people use infrared? I can honestly say I've haven't used IR on a Pocket PC in probably two years...it's just not that common in my world, though I'm sure for some it is. Poll time!

The M500, which was launched back in December 2004, had one major shortcoming. Much like the HTC Wizard, it lacked integrated Wi-Fi. If you wanted to add the functionality, it would be delivered by way of an SDIO Wi-Fi card.

You made a mistake here in the "What's Changed" section. I think you meant Magician.

Great review though  Won't take my Wizard away though, its a winner

No EDGE, no softkeys, no IR. Sorry, but I use all 3. I'll stick with my K-JAM (aka the HTC Wizard).

I don't use EDGE, but do use Ir and the softkeys, and I also heavily use the keyboard on my wizard, so this device wouldn't suit me.

Personally, I think the the Atom is better than this device, as its smaller and has more features. Still, this is a pretty nice lloking device. Its gotta stand up to the Atom though, so it might have trouble.

For now, I'd say Expansys would be your best bet. A couple of weeks ago, I read that the M600 was being sold in Thailand under the Laser brand. I'm not sure if this applies to some of the neighbouring countries as well, but I will find out for you.

Figure 25: Customising your phone - note the auto-answer and GSM band selection options. And yes, I've done the geek thing by using 24's CTU ringtone. ;)

My kpmail.wav alarms sound remarkably similar to the CTU phones. What I really want to find, though, is Jack Bauer's ringtone for the first couple of seasons.

nicely detailed and thorough review, i have a question however when it comes to text messages and SMS/MMS and typing...it seems it would be faster compared to a keyboard to just punch/tap in the letters on the screen am i right? or is this more of a subjective thing and different from person to person? I'm curious for those who have experienced both a keyboard and no keyboard if there is really a HUGE difference in input, this in a way is one of the major decisions i'm considering with my first convergence ppc, if anyone could fill me in on that i'd greatly appreciate your views

The latter, and it depends on the size of your fingers relative to the size of the keyboard as well. Having played with a Universal, it's a large device, but that also enables a large thumbboard -- which makes text entry faster for me. The Treo's or the i730's buttons, on the other hand, are a little small for my tastes.

It varies from person to person. Like Janak mentioned, it depends on the size of the fingers and keyboard. It also depends on what you've had experience with. Before using a Pocket PC Phone, I used Nokia phones (for nine years), so fast text input via a keypad is something I'm very used to. Having said that, I also tend to type fast using screen-based SIPs (e.g. Keyboard, Fitaly, etc.), so I really don't mind either methods of input.

sorry, I meant the new screen technology.

A-ha, the LTPS technology.

There's a company called Toppoly who does a lot of work in creating mobile LTPS screens. They have a page which explains LTPS in very basic terms (complete with images). I think it's worth visiting:

http://www.toppoly.com/Toppoly/Technology/LTPS_Tech.asp

Back in July, they announced the development of a 3.5" LTPS TFT-LCD. Before then, sub-2" LTPS TFT-LCDs existed, which is why only a couple of Pocket PCs have them. The M600 is one of them, plus if I'm not mistaken, the Qool Labs QDA has one as well; many other compact Pocket PCs make use of standard LCD technology. I think over the next couple of years, we'll see more stand-alone Pocket PCs and larger Phone Edition devices make use of a 3.5" LTPS TFT-LCD. It should be bliss on the eyes. :)

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks!! Though I still don't really understand what's sub-2" LTPS, a-Si, and p-Si. Would you please explain these thing to me? I really appreciate your patience. (I'm too lazy to search this on google. Besides, it's always better to have someone explain it to you. :D )

Anyway, I was extremely impressed by the photo of Eten's screen. I'm not sure, but I believe that you guys posted about M600 photo on some Chinese site (Mobile01?). Though, I just can't find it now. Maybe it's not this device, but I remembered that I read a lot about the awsome brightness and clarity of the screen, compared side-by-side along H4700, which look very dim compare the other device. Personally, I JUST LOVE bright screen. To me, brighter the better. I hope that the future VGA device will use this technology too.

Just curious, which device do you use more now, eten or x50v? Which one feels faster? Also, the screen?

Again, thanks. :D

Sub-2" means a screen that is between the 2.0" to 2.9" range. Often is the case that Phone Edition devices have 2.8" screens.

LTPS is an abbreviation for Low Temperature Poly Silicon - it's engineering talk for this new technology behind LCDs. Low temperature describes the &lt;400C temperatures required to crystallise the silicon layer of the LCD.

a-Si and p-Si are just different terms describing the forms of silicon used. a-Si is the common amorphous-silicon used in many standard LCD displays. p-Si describes the poly-silicon used in the LTPS displays. The overall benefit is higher electron mobility, thus greater circuitry flow. All this helps increase the screen brightness. The actual mechanics requires a deep understanding of physics and chemistry. Who knows... one day, you might be working in this field for you to do the explaining to me. :)

I'm not sure, but I believe that you guys posted about M600 photo on some Chinese site (Mobile01?).

Yes, it's very bright and clear. Using it is an absolute joy.

Just curious, which device do you use more now, eten or x50v? Which one feels faster? Also, the screen?

I use the M600 more than my X50v - primarily because as a converged device, I carry it around more (I never leave home without my phone). I use my X50v more as a multimedia and testing device. The M600 feels faster, but it's also worth remembering the less demands associated with rendering contents on a QVGA display than a VGA display. As for the screen, the M600 definitely looks a lot more fantastic on the brightness and colour reproduction scale, but as you'd expect, the X50v wins on the resolution scale.

Hello from France (it's to excuse my poor English !),

Very interesting and impressive by your very complete review of what seems to be my future device (I'm just waiting for the French ROM), I nevertheless don't understand what you want to say about the USB-Host.

USB synchronisation lets you sync your device with a computer via a USB cable; USB host lets you connect other USB peripherals to your device.

Firstly, welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts.

I can't really add on what Patrick and ctmagnus have mentioned. While USB-Host and USB-sync operate via the same specification, they are two different concepts. USB-Host enables a Pocket PC to detect and access multiple USB periperhals such as flash disks, iPods, and so on. The M600 no longer has that, but it is still able to synchronise via USB (like most Pocket PCs). You can do this directly using the USB-sync cable or the cradle (as I've mentioned in the review).

The range is about two metres. It's only good for macro shots, so don't expect it to help when taking pictures of city skylines at night. All in all, it's mediocre at best, but it works.

No, despite what you may have seen and heard, the M600 does not have IR. I also asked E-TEN directly and they confirmed it.

If you wish to beam a file, you can use Bluetooth. It's faster, doesn't require line of sight, and you won't even need to pair devices.

I actually read through that whole thread (as well as the references links given) - exactly one user claimed to have used it. The reference thread pointed to the mobiletechreview site - which also confirmed that while the IR window was available it was not working:

The SD slot and IR port live up top under a shiny black plastic cap.... Despite the IR window and usual Windows Mobile beaming support, E-TEN has not included IR in the M600

Nice review D!

The lcd technology was very 'enlightening' to say the least :)

Was wondering if this device can use Bluetooth A2DP [I'd like my next device to have the ability to use stereo BT headsets]. I'm debating on going with the HTC Wizard or ETEN M600; I think the Wizard's don't have A2DP [someone correct me if my info is wrong]. I've also seen a lot of complaints about the Wizard's processor 1/2 say it sucks and is super slow, the other says it's adequate.

Maybe someone can compare the OMAP vs SAMSUNG vs INTEL processors on these new devices?

Almost all of the Pocket PCs using Microsoft's stack do not support A2DP (for now, anyway). To my understanding, the M600 is one of them. While the interface has been customised by E-TEN, it doesn't support A2DP (although I'm basing this on facts; I haven't actually tested it).

The problem is, without AKU2 (AKU = adaptation kit update), A2DP isn't supported natively, thus leaving a lot of devices out to dry. Fortunately, AKU2 is scheduled to be released early 2006, so as long as your OEM releases it as an update, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of A2DP. E-TEN seems very committed to rolling out updates whenever and wherever possible, so I'd expect them to support A2DP as soon as Microsoft gives them the green light.

On the topic of the CPU, the M600's might not compare to some of the high-end XScales (by benchmark), but I assure you the device feels fast. I'm a frequent Skype user, and the Samsung 400MHz CPU performs great. TCPMP playback is smooth too.

The Dopod 818 Pro (HTC Prophet) supposedly has it (see the news item (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=44831) on the front-page), but yes, most other WM5 devices running the Microsoft stack need to wait for the update for complete A2DP support. Any WM5 devices running the Widcomm stack should support it though - but then the vast majority of those aren't Phone Edition devices.

if someone could kindly throw some more light as to the voice call quality n ringer quality and the capability to play audio n vedio it would be very nice...

Voice call quality is excellent. It's comparable to most other high quality phones out there.

Ringer quality, in my opinion, could be louder, but that's just a personal preference of mine. It works great in a quiet/normal environment, but in a noisy environment, you might not hear the phone ring. That's where the phone's vibrate feature is a bonus.

Audio quality is good. The sound is comparable to most other Pocket PCs. It lacks any sort of on-board DSP, so bass and treble could do with an enhancement. Of course, that's nothing a good third-party program can't solve. Conduits Pocket Player and TCPMP are all great programs which are capable of dramatically boosting sound quality on the device.

Video quality is excellent. The Samsung 400MHz CPU is very fast and is more than capable of providing smooth playback. At 240 x 320 in TCPMP, I noticed no lags in performance whatsoever. It works fine in Windows Media Player too.

hmm, you sound like you're falling in love with it......

Well, it's a solid, all-round device. One of the better Phone Edition devices I've played around with. :)

was wondering about how usefull the bundled voice commander is compared to microsoft voice command?

The bundled application works well. There are plenty of options for you to tweak, aspects of voice recognition which can be trained, this and that. I'd say out-of-the-box, it is able to recognise my voice about 75% of the time. I have an Australian accent, so that could play a part, but after training, I'd say recognition hovers around the 90%-95% levels.

As for the actual voice commands, they are very similar to what Microsoft Voice Command offers. You can 'Call &lt;contact>', 'Start &lt;program>, etc.

At the end of the day, I've stuck with Microsoft Voice Command - primarily because I've been using it for a long time, I like its simplistic approach, and I'm just used to it. Also, I feel it adapts to my Australian accent better than the bundled Voice Commander application. However, given some free time and a few minutes training, Voice Commander can definitely act as a Microsoft Voice Command replacement.

would also like to know, with all the bundled programs (e.g. voice commander) installed and running, how much ram is left available on the eten m600?

RAM-wise, it's approximately the same with and without the bundled programs installed. The M600 is very memory efficient.

Yes, it records in 3GP. The M600 also natively supports playback of 3GP files through Windows Media Player 10 Mobile (along with AVI and MP4).

is it possible to record video in any other format? is the option available? at what framerate does it record video at? hows the quality like. would it be too troublesome to post a sample clip?

The option is there, but E-TEN just hasn't added support for other formats yet. Maybe a ROM update will solve that? We'll see.

Anyway, I took time out just then to take a 320 x 240 sample clip for you. I lead a rather uninteresting life indoors, so you'll just have to put up with my lucky bamboo plant.

2. do you do gaming on it? how useful is the directional pad when it comes to gaming? other reviews have stated that its a bit small even for normal usage, let alone gaming.

It's about the same size as most other D-pads on the market, so it works perfectly fine for normal use. Granted, it is a bit firm, so it's not the best D-pad for gaming, but it works okay for relatively non-intensive gaming (in my case, versions of Arcanoid and Xonix).

The Atom looks to be a very capable device. I haven't tested it, so I can't comment on it.

phreaker18,

Aren't you panicking just a little bit - there's exactly one poster outlining his compliants in that thread. Hardly a flood of complaints.

A2DP by the way is a bluetooth profile that allows the use of stereo bluetooth headsets with higher quality sound, as opposed to the normal mono.

Try not to over-react. Almost every device you see on the market will have bugs here and there.

In response to the bugs that Jason raised:

- Phone disconnect itself after few minutes of conversation (very frequent)

I have NEVER encountered this issue, and it is not a bug identified by E-TEN. It sounds more like a problem with Jason's GSM connection than the phone itself.

- Phone can't wake up after sleep mode (very frequent), need to remove battery to wake it up again

This is a bug identified by E-TEN, but it is not frequent as Jason suggests. I'd say it occurs about 5% out of all instances. Now, before you panic, there are many factors suggesting that this is a problem with Windows Mobile 5.0 itself, and not the phone directly (1. either the OS is buggy, 2. OEMs have tweaked it and have thus made it buggy, or 3. third-party software is causing it). This thread is worth reading: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=44897

E-TEN is doing everything they can to resolve this issue in the next ROM update.

Voice distort when using bluetooth headset

Never had a problem with this. I use my Bluetooth headset with my M600 almost 24/7, and I've not had a single complaint over voice distortion.

Having said that, E-TEN has identified that a lot of noise is generated with a small number of Bluetooth headsets (namely, the Motorola HS820 and Cellink 9100). Again, this is something they hope to have resolved by the next ROM update.

Modem link not working at all, hang when select usb connection

I've identified this and alerted E-TEN to the problem.

- Bluetooth not support dial up network profile?

If you read my earlier posts, I have also identified this as a problem. Again, I've just asked E-TEN about this and am awaiting their response.

Bottom line - you're never going to come across a device that is completely bug-free. In 99% of cases, device issues are all software-related, so it is only up to the OEM to fix it and release it as a ROM update. If you think any of the aforementioned issues are distrubingly serious, wait until you see some of the other devices in the market - some have severe performance issues, quite unlike the M600.

I've had zero problems pairing the two, both from the M600-side and computer-side.

As for the SD error, I'm not sure what you're referring to there. Occassionally, there is a card detection delay, but again, E-TEN is aware of this and they are working to rectify the problem in the next ROM update. Personally, I've not had any issues with my SD card, so this problem appears to be affecting selective users only.

So Darius,

Its been almost 3 weeks with the m600 and WM5.0
Any insights to add?

How is the device holding up as a dedicated phone and PDA?

How are you finding WM5.0? Would you're experience be that the OS wasn't ready? Did Eten do a good adaptation of the OS?

Its been almost 3 weeks with the m600 and WM5.0
Any insights to add?

I've been liking it more and more as the days go by. It's a lot easier managing a converged device than a separate standalone PDA and a phone. Windows Mobile 5.0 as a phone OS works great. The enhanced Outlook Mobile is a real bonus. Couple that with Voice Command and you have a very functional device.

How are you finding WM5.0? Would you're experience be that the OS wasn't ready? Did Eten do a good adaptation of the OS?

One of the problems I've had with Windows Mobile 5.0 is the blasted "soft-reset to turn on" issue that arises every now and then. There was an extensive discussion on this issue a few days ago. Many Windows Mobile 5.0 devices seem to be plagued with the problem, and as far as I can tell, it's the SD card causing this. With the card removed, I no longer have the issue. Of course, that's like asking someone to run without legs - it's chaotic! Thankfully, E-TEN is working to have it fixed by the next ROM update, so I'm not going to get all soggy about it. Right now, I'm still running a pre-release version of the English ROM.

I guess the other problem is application upgrades. Windows Mobile 5.0 seems real buggy when it comes to updating applications and this isn't specific to my M600. Say I wish to upgrade my version of Resco Pocket Radio 1.30 to 1.31. I apply the CAB and it says it wishes to uninstall the previous version first. You hit, "Yes", and then the device has a brain fart. It just fails to uninstall the application completely. So you're left with a half-uninstalled application that you can't even uninstall completely because the OS managed to remove it from the Add/Remove programs list as well. You then attempt to install the new CAB, but it tells you the installation was unsuccessful because the previous uninstallation was a failure. By now, you start ripping your hair out.

So you soft-reset your device and attempt to install the new CAB again. This time, it works okay but it leaves you wondering why Microsoft failed to identify and patch this bug prior to release of the OS. This isn't an issue that occurs everytime, but still... :(

The problem with this setup is that Arkon doesn't make a powered GPS mount for the E-TEN M600 / TORQ P100w (at least not yet). So at the end of the day, you'd have problems getting the Pocket PC to fit in the connector of the mount. What I suggest is getting a universal PDA mount and coupling it with a separate Bluetooth GPS unit.

Theoretically, the E-TEN updates would work, but I suspect TORQ has their own download centre. When you purchase the device, there should be material in the box or on the CD detailing the nature of ROM updates and whether you need to acquire them from E-TEN or TORQ.

Darius..
this is what i gather from the other forums... kindly shed some light

Well in my 2 weeks of owning the M600 i have come up with several issues (most important ones first):
- Sleep mode crashes the phone and it can only be turned back on with a soft reset; in addition, when in sleep mode, the phone does not receive incoming voice calls. It's as good as being OFF- very very frustrating.
- To respond to this, I changed the settings of the phone so that it would never power off, and now the battery lasts a maximum of 2 hours with WIFI&amp;GSM and about 6 hours with GSM only. Very very bad, considering I have to sit next to an AC outlet most of the day to charge the phone! I have already ordered a new battery.
- The latest version of PocketPC Skype crashes as soon as the program is opened, and immediately shuts down, thus being unusable.
- Windows Mobile Outlook does not support HTML emails, thus pictures only show up as Internet links.
- Windows Media Player 10 does not support .swf and .mpeg files.

I am very hesitant to install the new ROM Upgrade 161 because Eten has not even announced the changes applied. My current version is 0015A4, not very happy with it (as shown above) but then again I have too many programs installed to risk the ineffective ROM 161 upgrade. If any of you have experienced better results with this upgrade, please let me know.
Have been using the phone for the past 2 weeks, initially very happy with it. Started to install more programmes. Tried to use skype, basically useless!!! I am unable to receive any sounds but my friend could hear me really clearly. Then I have the same problem like everyone else, the damn phone hangs!!!! Esp. after being idle. But if I am using the thing then it won't hang!!!

This is something I've already discussed and it appears to be affecting other Windows Mobile 5.0 devices as well, not just the M600. A quick fix might be to run the device without an SD card - but that's only a short term correction. Let's see if Microsoft/E-TEN can put anything on the table via a ROM update.

To respond to this, I changed the settings of the phone so that it would never power off, and now the battery lasts a maximum of 2 hours with WIFI&amp;GSM and about 6 hours with GSM only. Very very bad, considering I have to sit next to an AC outlet most of the day to charge the phone! I have already ordered a new battery.

I think in this case, the user should have been well aware of what his/her actions would deliver. If you're sucking the device 24/7 on full power, you're bound to have bad battery life. There's nothing mind-boggling about the figures being presented.

The latest version of PocketPC Skype crashes as soon as the program is opened, and immediately shuts down, thus being unusable.

Which version are they running? The latest one, v1.2.089, runs perfectly fine on my device. The issue they're having sounds more like a software conflict with other programs.

Windows Mobile Outlook does not support HTML emails, thus pictures only show up as Internet links. Windows Media Player 10 does not support .swf and .mpeg files.

These are universal Windows Mobile deficiencies, not M600-specific ones. It's foolish to state that this is a direct fault of the M600 when every other Windows Mobile device is incapable of doing the same.

Darius,

Well done on a very comprehensive and informative review. As a result of reading it I am sitting at my desk with my new M600 (you can ask eten for commission!). As you seem to be the resident expert, I was wondering if you can help me with a few questions about the device....

1. I have been using software called Anynotes for 18 months now, it is a text based tree format note taker &amp; is brilliant. Had it working fine on my axim (WM 2003 SE) until it was nicked last month. Installed the M600 &amp; ActiveSync 4.1 (also tried earlier versions) &amp; notice some big changes, one being the way the device connects - through a network connection. Unfortunately Anynotes does not seem to recognise the device is detached and synchronising the desktop version of this to the PPC version is impossible. As this is the main reason I use a PPC, my M600 may have just become a very expensive doorstop! I have emailed the coder who wrote Anynotes, but it does not seem to be updated at all recently. Any ideas or any suggestions on how to resolve or at worst an alternative tree structured note software?

2. IYHO what is the best screen protector for the M600 - theres a few about - single pack expensive or multi-pack cheap!!

3. Have you come across any simple &amp; rugged case for the M600, like the dell canvas cover that comes free with the axim, the simpler (&amp; slimmer) the better.

FYI for those reading - got the M600 off expansys.co.uk delivered to Ireland for €516 ex VAT - Ordered at 4pm - arrived 11am next morning - good service. I will reserve judgement for a couple of weeks until I have given it some use &amp; got Anynotes working !!!

Happy Xmas.

Unfortunately, little can be done until the developer enables support for Windows Mobile 5.0. The new OS has made a few changes to the way devices synchronise with their desktop counterparts - and this is something that can't be changed.

There are other note-taking applications out there. One of the more popular ones is PhatNotes. (http://www.phatware.com/phatnotes/index.html) I suggest giving that a try.

2. IYHO what is the best screen protector for the M600 - theres a few about - single pack expensive or multi-pack cheap!!

Generally, the multi-pack ones are rubbish. Many years ago, I got by on cheap Belkin screen protectors. Then I started using the WriteSHIELDs from Pocket PC Techs (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/) and I've never looked back. They are expensive, but they're worth every cent. They're cleanable, reusable, and greatly improve the screen's writing surface. They come in two forms: AG (anti-glare) and C2 (crystal-clear). Personally, I prefer the AG, though your mileage may vary.

They sell WriteSHIELDs for the E-TEN M500 which should work fine on the M600.

3. Have you come across any simple &amp; rugged case for the M600, like the dell canvas cover that comes free with the axim, the simpler (&amp; slimmer) the better.

Unfortunately, I haven't - mainly for two reasons: (1) The default case seems to do the job, albeit a bit troublesome at times; (2) I've chosen not to use a case with my device (at least until I find a clear plastic/silicon cover for it). Fortunately, the M600 should be compatible with any M500 case/accessory out there, so sniff around on Google and you might come up with something to your liking. :)

There is a new WWE ROM update (0170) available at http://update.eten.ch/

Immediately following the upgrade, I noticed something that I thought was worth mentioning - that is, the Extra Application Installer is no longer present. Instead, all of E-TEN's applications are automatically installed following a hard-reset. Now, I'd love to remove half the applications simply because I do not use them, but it's no longer that simple. :(

I'm not sure why E-TEN chose to walk this path.

Darius, thanks for the review and the thread!

I have had an M600 for a week now, and I have to say I am liking it more and more. It is better and faster than my HP6340 in every aspect, more user friendly, better design, and on and on.

I have experienced the Sleep To Death problem twice so far, and was wondering if this 0170 ROM update claims to fix it?

I had put the M600 through a lot of testing before the ROM update and I came to the conclusion that it was the SD card causing the "sleep to death" problem. After running the M600 for two weeks without an SD card, I no longer experienced the issue (but to consider that a fix is silly).

So, without hesitation, I installed the 0170 ROM update to see if the bug had been fixed. Now, I've only been running it for a day, so it's still a little early to comment on the issue. But so far, things are looking good, so you just might want to try this ROM update and see how things turn out on your end. Of course, if I experience the problem again, I'll post back here to let you know.

Maybe, maybe not. I had the same application setup before and after the ROM update, and removal of the SD card seemed to fix the problem. But because of that, it could very well be an application that's causing this break in stability, and if it's card-related, it could be the Pocket Plus Today plug-in (which displays card status). I'll try disabling it for a few days and see if the problem is fixed.

This may seem basic, but have you tried simply removing the storage card meter from Pocket Plus? (Iirc, that meter is part of the default Today plugin layout and it's one of the few that I've kept through all the layout changes I've done so that's certainly something I'd skip over in troubleshooting.) As long as there are no meters or shortcuts that point to a storage card, that shouldn't affect anything.

Thanks, I went through the process outlined at that website and got a fatal error on the repair of ActiveSync 4.0. cbf pursuing this any further, life is too short.

There is so much weirdness going on here. If I unplug the LAN cable from my work PC, I can get ActiveSync to 'sync' ending in the 85010014, if I have the LAN cable plugged in I get only 'Connecting' and the endless green spinning wheel.

Interestingly the Toshiba e800 from work, running WM2003 syncs first time every time under the exact same conditions. :? To me that would indicate there's nothing wrong with ActiveSync and Outlook, and there's something in WM5 that's causing the problem. Unfortunately I don't have time to become Microsoft Certified just to get my phone to work as it should, so hopefully Microsoft, in it's munificence, can actually get their OS to work as advertised sometime in the future.

Wait, you're using AS 4.0? Don't use that -- use AS 4.1 from Microsoft's Pocket PC website (www.pocketpc.com). It fixes a number of 85* sync issues from what I've heard -- as well as connection issues. No guarantee if it'll fix yours, but AS 4.0 does have a number of problems.

Not quite. AS4 goes into "compatibility mode" when connecting to a WM2003 device, and runs the exact same as AS 3.8. It's basically different code that runs based on whether you have a 2003 or a WM5 device.

Any one using with inav gps software and globalsat bt338? i wonder this will work.

I've not tested this setup, so I can't really comment on it.

where to get Eten M600 in USA?

It's being released in the USA under the TORQ brand. You can also buy it under the E-TEN brand, but you'd need to order it in from overseas.

Whatever the case, I've heard that Mad Monkey Boy's Gadgets (http://www.dweiniger.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&amp;products_id=109) is a reliable reseller.

Unfortunately, I only have a list of authorised dealers for Europe. You can contact (http://www.etencorp.com/products/Communication/sales_contact.php?location=USA&amp;[email protected]) E-TEN directly and ask them for a list of American dealers.

Back before the M600 existed, TORQ gave the device the P100w model name, but I believe it has now been changed to P120.

That doesn't exactly tell us much - a cab file is just an installation archive which could contain anything at all.

I'm not really sure what you're referring to here, but I'd assume you're making reference to an operator customisation CAB? If so, it's probably not mandatory to have it installed.

The K-JAM is nice if you like the slide-out keyboard. Otherwise, I'd say the M600 is a great choice for a phone. The P990i isn't even a Pocket PC Phone, so it's a bit of an apples vs. oranges comparison.

It's looking more and more like a Pocket Plus issue now. ;)

Greetings Darius,
Fantastic article on the M600! Highly appreciated! I am completely new to the PDA/mobile technology am have been thinking about getting one.

I like the M600 but don't want to be paying up such a large sum of money for new technology so I'm considering the M500. You mentioned that a Wi-Fi card can be used in the M500, whereabouts in Australia can I get that from and by any chance, would you know how much would it cost?

Also, is the Windows 5.0 operating system better than the Windows 2003 on M500 and is it worth upgrading to it?

Finally, could you recommend any GPS software which is good for the M500? Thank you for your efforts and time!

Greetings Darius,
Fantastic article on the M600! Highly appreciated!

Thanks, and welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts. :)

You mentioned that a Wi-Fi card can be used in the M500, whereabouts in Australia can I get that from and by any chance, would you know how much would it cost?

Most specialist technology stores should have one. For example, you can get this compact Socket SDIO WLAN card from Harris Technology (http://www.ht.com.au/scripts/xworks.exe?PART:M7886#Tof) for $140. If you don't mind shopping with an online retailer, then you can get a Spectec SDIO WLAN card from Expansys (http://www.expansys.com.au/product.asp?code=124054) for $114.

They're not cheap, so I'm not sure how much you'd gain from getting an M500 + SD Wi-Fi card, as opposed to the M600 by itself. I guess it all depends on how much the M500 is selling for these days.

Also, is the Windows 5.0 operating system better than the Windows 2003 on M500 and is it worth upgrading to it?

I believe it's better. First of all, Windows Mobile 5.0 makes use of persistent storage, so RAM is actually used for program execution, whereas ROM is used for data storage. Compare that to the old Windows Mobile 2003 model where RAM was used for both program execution and data storage (in a 50:50 split), and because RAM is volatile memory, if your battery were to run out, your data would be wiped. Windows Mobile 5.0 puts an end to that since ROM is non-volatile memory.

Secondly, there are many enhancements across Office Mobile (including the addition of PowerPoint Mobile). Outlook Mobile has received some awesome enhancements by way of an improved Contacts view and deeper integration with Messaging. Excel Mobile now supports charts and graphs, and Word Mobile also supports better formatting.

There are many under-the-hood changes with Windows Mobile 5.0 - e.g. support for Direct3D Mobile, new APIs for developers to create more advanced programs, etc.

The downside of persistent storage which I mentioned earlier is that ROM is a little slower than RAM, so you might find that copying a file or synchronising a few databases will take longer on a Windows Mobile 5.0 than a Windows Mobile 2003 device. But on that note, the differences are negligible - probably in the order of half a second, so I don't think it's worth fussing about.

Finally, could you recommend any GPS software which is good for the M500? Thank you for your efforts and time!

For use in Australia? There is Whereis Navigator (http://navigator.whereis.com/), Navman's SmartST (http://www.navman.com/go/aus/products/index.html#gps4420) and Destinator (http://www.destinatortechnologies.com/en_US/consumer/pocketpc/index.html). I've heard good things about all three, though I've never actually tried either of them to give you an account of my experiences.

Thought you might be interested in knowing that I followed up on the "sleep to death" issue. It's not related to Pocket Plus, but rather, the sync schedule in Windows Mobile 5.0.

If you visit http://update.eten.ch/ (in Internet Explorer), and navigate to Downloads > Updates > M600 > Patch for OS 0170 > Patch for Backlight, you'll see a file called DisableSyncSchedule.cpf. Download it and run it on your device. You should receive a message in your Inbox notifying you that the patch was successfully applied.

On a side note, there's a new ROM (WWE 0171) available. I'm off to see what's changed. :)

Hey Darius,
I just ordered a M600 unit from Trinix, a company on Welshpool road in WA for AU$938, which is the best price I've seen so far and no courier charges as I can just pick it up.

Being completely new to PDA/mobile technology, I was quite apprehensive due to the STD problems and other bugs with Windows Mobile 5.0 and the reported poor call quality of the device. How do you find the signal and audio quality in Perth? Also, let me know how you go in the next few days with the latest upgrade and if it has solved the STD permanently.

But after weighing the pros and cons (and cents and dollars), I figured it would be worth taking the risk and dealing with the problems as they came along. The M500 is selling for around AU$780, but it works out to be a lot more expensive than the M600 if I got the Wi-Fi card and ROM update. Besides that, I figured that Windows Mobile 2003 was going to be obsolete soon anyway.

Have you got any advice for getting memory cards? Are they created equally and it is just a matter of pricing or is one company any better than the other? Cheers!

The signal and audio quality for me, here in Perth, has been great. I've really not had any issues with either of the two.

Also, let me know how you go in the next few days with the latest upgrade and if it has solved the STD permanently.

The ROM 0170 + STD patch (available at http://update.eten.ch/) already solves it, but I will check out ROM 0171 to see if the STD patch is still needed.

All generic ones are about the same. There are some that allow for faster transfer rates (e.g. the Sandisk Ultra range), but you're not going to really feel the difference when used in a PDA.

I bought my SD cards in Singapore as they were cheaper there (a couple years ago), but having said that, they are now priced comparatively here in Australia. You can probably get a Sandisk 1GB SD from JB Hi-Fi or Strathfield for less than $100 (I think). If not, you can try one of the local computer stores.

By the way, I've heard some dodgy things about the DSE brand, so I'd steer clear of them.

ROM 0171 solves most universal issues. Of course, there are some other things that need sorting (e.g. introduction of the MSFP for push e-mail), but I'm sure they will be addressed in a future ROM update. For now, there are no other patches that need to be applied to ROM 0171.

It was hinted on above by the West Australian guy and almost answered my question (it had to be on the last page i read through)...

From what i can gather the only differences between the M500 and M600 (other than the black case) is that the M600 has Wireless LAN and doesnt have the USB connectivity that the M500 had (i.e. connecting to thumb drives, Ipods, possibly my digi cam usb slot that appears as a spare drive on my home pc), and WM5 instead of WM2003.

If i dont value Wireless LAN that highly (more interested in the USB connectivity) and can find a decent second hand M500 (or a well priced new M500) and then flash that to WM5 will it effectively be the same device as the M600 but without Wireless LAN?

When flashed to WM5 will it lose the USB connectivity that the M500 had on WM2003?

and last but not least is, where on earth can i buy (or download if its available that way) a copy of WM5 for the M500?

thanks a lot for your time, im looking forward to your reply as im ready to lay the money down for one.

p.s. i have found them for around AU$820 delivered to Australia from Hungary but cant find them for under $920 within Australia. if anyone knows of a better price within Australia (with an Australian warranty) then i would love to hear from you so PM me or post here for everyone to see. the $100 saved by importing my own might not be worth the extra security of having an Australian warranty only 45min from where i live (Sydney).

That price was for the M600 but from Hungary and would obviously need a converter for the AC adapter (so you would hopefully just charge from the cradle USB 5v).

Apparently that’s better than the Australian distributor is selling it to the Aussie resellers as when I asked a few (ok about 15 resellers at least) to match the price they all said they cant do it and a number said they would be contacting the distributor as they now realize they are perhaps getting a little ripped off themselves (best price in Australia is around $917 plus postage, that I could find).

The store in Hungary is: http://shop.eten.hu/ but obviously will fluctuate depending on the exchange rate. Also there is a drop down menu at the bottom right that changes the invoice to US$ instead of Ft whatever currency that is.

You have the slim chance of being hit with customs duty (or so the eXpansys sales rep tried to scare me with) but realistically I think for items like this it has to be either a commercial quantity or over $1000 (can someone confirm?).

In the end the $100 difference between the cheapest Aussie reseller and that store in Hungary might be worth it because you get Australian warranty support, an Aussie AC adapter and no mess for the delivery.

Also, with the WM5 Upgrade Cd being so expensive I might just grab an M600 and forget the M500 existed, kind of sad they hit you for that much for it.

For imports, the Australian government will charge 0% or 5% customs duty. The exact amount is up to the Customs officers, but they tend to be pretty lenient.

It could just be Expansys' high pre-order price. They have a tendency to be wildly unpredictable. :(

That depends on what you're looking for in a device. If a slide-out keyboard isn't important to you, then the M600 offers plenty of advantages over the 8125. For example, faster processor, excellent screen quality, and an SD slot. If you need EDGE support or even infrared, then the 8125 might be a better choice.

given the recent Rom upgrades of the o2 Atom, whereby the mechanics of the device are alot more smoother would you still rate the M600 a better pocket pc/phone?

Interesting. Someone from MTekk asked me the exact same question the other day. 8O

Even after the ROM updates, I still think both units have their ups and downs. Both the Atom and M600 have QVGA (240 x 320) screen resolutions. Because the Atom has a slightly smaller screen, the pixels are more condensed, so it might seem more refined on the Atom's screen than the M600 screen. However, the M600 has an excellent LTPS TFT-LCD which gives it an edge over competitors with regards to colour reproduction and brightness.

The M600 also has an SD slot as opposed to a miniSD slot as seen on the Atom. I'm not sure if you perceive this as a positive feature. You're more likely to have a stockpile of SD cards floating around than miniSD cards, thus saving you the need to purchase additional accessories.

I've given the M600 its fair share of kudos, so let me now focus on the Atom. First of all, it's smaller. Secondly, it has an FM tuner and a 2-megapixel camera. The former is nice, but the latter has never really bothered me much. The quality of pictures from most camera phones isn't really something to write home about, and the difference between a 1.3-megapixel on the M600 and a 2-megapixel on the Atom is something not worth raising an eyebrow over.

One other thing, the Atom has infrared. Do you use it? If so, then you might want to think twice before purchasing the M600. But if quad-band is very important to you, then the M600 seems like a clear winner. Bear in mind it does not have EDGE support, but Australia doesn't really use EDGE, anyway.

I haven't tried the M600 with GPS yet, but the G500's integrated GPS chipset seems like a solid performer (with support for TMC and all), so if you're after a dedicated GPS Pocket PC, then you might want to wait for the G500. Of course, the lack of Wi-Fi and an SD slot might sway your decision back to the M600.

An M600 + external Bluetooth GPS module combo certainly works, but it just depends on whether you want to be carrying two devices around all the time.

Would it be easier to add gps to the M600 or add wifi to the G500?

That's an easier scenario to tackle. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages, so you'll have to weigh them up and decide which is the best option for you.

Adding GPS to the M600
There are many Bluetooth GPS units available in the market, so it's simply a matter of you finding one you like (considering size, price, performance, etc.), then acquiring an appropriate software package. The downside is you'll have to carry an extra unit around whenever you want to use GPS (as well as keep it charged when the battery is running low).

Adding Wi-Fi to the G500
You'll need to purchase an SDIO Wi-Fi card for the G500. The newer ones are only a tad bigger than a standard SD card, so the size shouldn't be a problem. The issue is, having an SDIO Wi-Fi card will not allow you to add in an extra memory card as the M600 only has one slot. Now, having said that, there are combo SDIO Wi-Fi + 256MB cards out there, but they're a lot bigger (around 50% bigger than a standard SD card), and the extra storage isn't all that spacious.

Why would you need to carry an extra unit? Can't you just download software unto the M500 and use it's screen? Having said that, I was told that the GPS software costs approx AU$300 (although it doesn't require a monthly subscription for GPS services).

trentski was asking about GPS solutions for the M600, not the G500. While the G500 has GPS, the M600 does not - hence, the need for an extra unit if you were to enable GPS functionality on the device.

Welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts. :)

You mentioned a ROM upgrade to 171 in an earlier post. I bought the M500 this month so will it have the latest ROM upgrade? How do I check?

There are two ways.

You can soft-reset your device. On the initial orange E-TEN boot page, there is some black text at the top of the screen. If it mentions 0171, then you have ROM 0171.

Alternatively, tap Start > Settings > System > System Information. Expand Software, and if it says 0171 under the "Minor Version" heading, then you have ROM 0171.

If I do need to upgrade the ROM what are the steps?

Visit http://update.eten.ch/ (preferably in Internet Explorer), then navigate to Download\Updates\M600\ENG, and download the EXE. All instructions are provided when you launch the file.

Just a few points to keep in mind: (1) ensure the device is connected directly to the computer's USB port (i.e. not through a hub); (2) ensure you have the power adapter connected; (3) backup any important data; (4) don't attempt to tap the screen or buttons of the device while the ROM is being flashed.

Good luck! :)

It doesn't ask for the passkey sometimes - amusingly. But, I assume you got the headset up and running okay?

Are you experiencing the poor sound quality over the Bluetooth headset? If so, what ROM version are you running? You can check this by soft-resetting your device, and noting the ROM version number that appears at the top of the initial orange boot screen. Alternatively, tap Start > Settings > System > System Information > Software, and note the "Minor Version" number. Is it 0171? If not, you should update to that version of ROM as it provides significant improvements to voice quality over Bluetooth headsets.

Instructions for download and applying the ROM update can be found in my earlier posts.

rom version 0171...bad quality sound face by the person who i call...receiving party.

It could be your particular headset then. The Jabra BT150 doesn't really have a noise-cancelling microphone.

what type of bluetooth hset r u using???

I'm using the Logitech Mobile Freedom. It has a WindStop microphone and it works great. I've never received a complaint from the other party about poor voice quality.

I am new to the forum. I just purchased my M600 on eBay. I read somewhere (of which now I cannot find) a review that recommended that you purchase a seperate cable because it was not included in the box. Have you heard of this? Sorry about being so vague! ;-)

Also, what's a GOOD BlueTooth Headset that you would recommend for this device? Or do they really don't make to much of a difference?

The only "separate" cable I can think of is the USB-Host cable which allows your Pocket PC to recognise USB peripherals. Unfortunately, USB-Host was a feature supported in the E-TEN M500, but it was removed from the M600.

Also, what's a GOOD BlueTooth Headset that you would recommend for this device? Or do they really don't make to much of a difference?

They do make a difference, and it all depends on what you want in a headset. You need to take a number of factors into account: size, voice quality, ease of use. I'm using the Logitech Mobile Freedom, which while not being the most compact headset around, has excellent noise cancelling attributes that make it a solid performer. Jabra and Plantronics also make a few good headsets, so visit their home pages to see if any tickle your fancy.

darius,
thanks for doing such a great job on your review. i've been researching for a few days, trying to find my next phone. i found the m600, then i found your review, and i'm pretty happy with what you say.

a quick rundown. i live in the u.s., but i just recently started doing international work. currently i'm in bamako, mali, africa. i have a treo 650 from sprint....but stupid sprint does't give you a sim-card multi band phone. so, i wanted to get a good phone for use all over the world...hence the m600.

couple questions though. i just spent the past 2hrs reading all 17pgs of your review, so some questions were already answered. but here goes:
1. with A2DP bluetooth, does that give you the ability to listen to mp3s over the bluetooth? i wanted this on my treo, but no good. is it possible with the m600?
2. you say you use skype a lot. i just got turned onto it, and so far, it's AWESOME. question is, how good would you say it works over the m600? pretty user friendly? work with your contact list, or the list from skype?
3. how would you compare it to the treo? i'm pretty happy with my 650, but how would you compare them? big step up?
4. how fast is the wi-fi? cable modem fast? dial up fast?
5. i found the m600, unlocked, brand new on www.welectronics for $589 (though i talked to a guy there and he said it was on special for $550.) is there something wrong with this? i've been seeing it a lot more expensive other places. do you know any better price? i want a u.s. model that i can use, and have shipped overseas.
6. how strong is the wi-fi pickup signal? about as strong as a typical notebook? also, can you leave your wi-fi turned off on the m600, and have it let you know when it senses a signal in the air? or, with it turned on, it can notify you of a signal in the air. that way, if you are not used to the area, it can let you know if wi-fi is there, instead of having to just trial and error.

thanks for all your help. i plan on getting my m600 the beginning of next month. any suggestions you can offer, i'd greatly appreciate! thanks again.

Welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts.

1. with A2DP bluetooth, does that give you the ability to listen to mp3s over the bluetooth? i wanted this on my treo, but no good. is it possible with the m600?

The latest version of the M600's ROM supports it (i.e. ROM 0171). Interestingly, A2DP is something that's supposed to be included in the Adaptation Kit Update 2 (AKU 2) for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, but E-TEN managed to grab the profile and release it beforehand. So yes, if you wish to listen to your MP3s over Bluetooth in stereo quality, it can be done.

2. you say you use skype a lot. i just got turned onto it, and so far, it's AWESOME. question is, how good would you say it works over the m600? pretty user friendly? work with your contact list, or the list from skype?

Skype, in its current form, is pretty user-friendly. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the desktop version, but it's still very functional. The start page contains details on how many contacts you have online, as well as your account credit. The following contacts page is similar to the one on the desktop. You can highlight a multi-modal contact and choose to call them, send a voicemail, start a chat, etc. There is also a dial page and a log page if you need it.

When you first sign into Skype for Pocket PC, it should automatically pull your contact list from the Skype servers within the first minute.

3. how would you compare it to the treo? i'm pretty happy with my 650, but how would you compare them? big step up?

It's an apples vs. oranges comparison. One is a Palm OS device with an integrated keyboard. The other is a Windows Mobile device without a keyboard. I'd definitely say that the M600 is more powerful, but the Treo 650 has been recognised as a generic user-friendly device that's perfect for the professional consumer. That's not to say the M600 isn't user-friendly. Given time for adaptation, the M600 will grow on you in an instant.

4. how fast is the wi-fi? cable modem fast? dial up fast?

It's 802.11b, so theoretically, it supports 11Mbps. Actual rates on a Pocket PC tends to be a lot less, but if you're connected to a home or office network that's plugged into a broadband connection, you can expect to browse the internet and retrieve mail very quickly on the M600.

5. i found the m600, unlocked, brand new on www.welectronics for $589 (though i talked to a guy there and he said it was on special for $550.) is there something wrong with this? i've been seeing it a lot more expensive other places. do you know any better price? i want a u.s. model that i can use, and have shipped overseas.

I can't say I've heard of that store before. I've heard some good stuff about Mad Monkey Boy (http://www.dweiniger.com/), but I'm not too sure if they'll ship overseas for you. If you're after a US model, you should look for the TORQ P120, rather than the E-TEN M600. It's the same device; just different branding.

6. how strong is the wi-fi pickup signal? about as strong as a typical notebook?

I'd say it's pretty much dead on. The pick-up signal strength is similar to that of my current Dell notebook.

also, can you leave your wi-fi turned off on the m600, and have it let you know when it senses a signal in the air?

Unfortunately, the M600, like most devices, doesn't support active Wi-Fi while in standby mode. You can support the running of the GSM and Bluetooth radios while in standby mode, but that's an unrelated matter.

or, with it turned on, it can notify you of a signal in the air. that way, if you are not used to the area, it can let you know if wi-fi is there, instead of having to just trial and error.

That can be done with third-party software. WiFiFoFum, Hitchhiker, and Wi-Fi Graph are a few good examples.

thanks for all your help. i plan on getting my m600 the beginning of next month.

Cool, I hope you enjoy it. :)

I think a response to this question is largely dependent on the size and resolution of your monitor. For what it's worth, the M600 is roughly 11cm long and 6cm wide.

I pulled out my ruler (I can't estimate sizes/measurements worth a da*n) and measured that picture, and it's right on, on my monitor. I had previously assumed it was about 3/4 that size, so the M600/Torq is a runner in my books. 8)

Realistically, there are no differences. Both models are driven by the same set of hardware and the same operating system. You might even prefer the E-TEN version since the updated ROMs are rolled out by them first. Just make sure you purchase the English version of the M600 and not the Chinese version (unless you can read Chinese).

And no, you wouldn't get screwed by purchasing the E-TEN version. :) It's a universal quad-band device, so it'll work fine on the US GSM bands.

Of course it is! When Darius is around, there's never just one more question. Good thing he knows all the answers. ;)

some input on the processor speed of M600 and the O2 Atom... which do u think is faster?

By itself, the processor speed won't necessarily determine the performance of the device as a whole. But since you're interested, the M600 has a Samsung S3C2440A 400MHz, while the Atom has an Intel PXA272 416MHz. Although the Atom has a slightly higher clock speed, it doesn't necessarily mean it's faster. A comparison between the two is best told by benchmark results. Let's refer to a benchmark figure I included in my review:

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-etenm600-42.jpg

Note, the M600 attained a CPU score of 1501.2. The Atom's CPU score (not pictured) - 1338.6. Obviously, the disparity is attributable to processor architecture, and not just clock speed.

You already have ROM 0171, so you don't need to install the one you just downloaded.

Your Bluetooth firmware version is the same as mine; it will differ from device to device as each one has a different production date, so the newer ones will have a later version.

Unfortunately, if the person on the receiving end is still complaining of noise, then there's little you can do by way of updates until E-TEN releases the next ROM after 0171.

There is one possible fix that you can try. Tap Start > Settings > System > Microphone, tap the Bluetooth tab, then try sliding the gain tab towards Minimum. At the moment, your headset may be responding to background noise a little too sensitively, so hopefully, changing this setting can help correct it.

Dear Darius

Firstly, I would like to thank for the valueable help you provide to all intersted Eten M600 potential buyers :D !!

My questions are as follows:

1) Can M600 use bluetooth headset to call contacts using voice command?

2) And if yes, can the above be activated when the device is in standby mode? In other word, would pressing the action botton on the BT headset awake the device from the dormant mode and trigger voice command?

3) As M600 uses BT v 1.2, should the BT headset device be of exact same version? I am using SE Akono HBH-662!!! Would future ROM updates upgrade BT to v 2.0??

4) Is this feature enabled in the actual device or a product of WM5, hence all devices with WM5 OS should have it?

I have read in K-Jam reviews that this feature is surely there. I am a current user of SE K750 and previously SE P900 and 910i and I find this feature essential for sales people driving their cars all day like me.

Your verdict will decide my purchase of the M600.

Many Thanks

Welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts. :)

1) Can M600 use bluetooth headset to call contacts using voice command?

Are you referring to Microsoft Voice Command or the bundled Cyberon Voice Commander?

By default, Microsoft Voice Command does not support full operation with Bluetooth headsets. That is, you can't press a button on your headset, speak into your headset, and have Voice Command process your command. Instead, you have to press a button on your Pocket PC and speak into your headset. There are registry hacks available which will enable the former on select Phone Edition devices. I've not tried it out on the M600, so I can't really say if it works or not.

Cyberon Voice Commander, on the other hand, can be used with a headset. The latest ROM for the M600 has been tweaked so that everytime you connect your headset to the M600 or tap a button on the headset, it will bring up the Voice Commander utility and await your command. This is quite handy if you fancy the idea of hands-free dialing.

2) And if yes, can the above be activated when the device is in standby mode? In other word, would pressing the action botton on the BT headset awake the device from the dormant mode and trigger voice command?

Assuming you disable the Button Lock mode in the M600's settings panel, then you should be able to activate the device in standby mode and trigger the voice command application simply by pressing your headset's button. I've tested it with Cyberon Voice Commander and it works fine.

3) As M600 uses BT v 1.2, should the BT headset device be of exact same version? I am using SE Akono HBH-662!!! Would future ROM updates upgrade BT to v 2.0??

Bluetooth is backwards compatible, so you can utilise any accessory equipped with Bluetooth 1.0, 1.0B, 1.1, and 1.2. If you want to enhance the quality of audio through your headset, then a Bluetooth 1.2 headset is recommended. In fact, your Akono HBH-662 is one such headset. Adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) is an enhancement in Bluetooth 1.2 that helps reduce interference, so a headset that utilises it would be beneficial.

Future ROM updates won't upgrade the M600's Bluetooth module. It has been designed as a v1.2, Class 2 module, and an upgrade to v2.0 would require physical replacement of hardware.

4) Is this feature enabled in the actual device or a product of WM5, hence all devices with WM5 OS should have it?

Which feature are you referring to? Bluetooth headset operation with a voice command application? As mentioned earlier, it's not natively supported in Microsoft Voice Command (or Windows Mobile 5.0), but you should find what you're looking for in Cyberon Voice Commander.

Yes, that is correct.

I've been a user of Microsoft Voice Command from the start - long before I switched to the M600 as my main device. It has many standout features - zero training required, tight integration with the default Windows Mobile applications, and general ease of use. However, if you can train the voice recognition system of Cyberon Voice Commander well enough, it can be just as solid as Microsoft's offering.

One more questions please, any news about the native installer application in M600 that disappeared after upgrading to ROM 0171?

Yes, it's no longer present. I'm not sure why E-TEN chose to do this. And, there isn't really an easy way to uninstall the bundled applications either. If you don't use any of the applications and their presence in the Programs menu is bugging you, the easiest solution is to remove the shortcut icons.

Whether E-TEN will add the installer application in a future ROM update is still a little uncertain.

Well, I can't give a definite answer as to whether previous versions of the M600 ROM supported it. Last I recall, they didn't, and I only remember it being active with 0170 and above - but take it with a grain of salt.

Also, do note that not all headsets support this feature. So, even with an M600 and ROM 0171, there's no 100% guarantee that your device + headset combination will work.

Anyway, what does the salesperson have? Is it a demo model? Are they willing to upgrade it to 0171 for you to test?

Hello Darius

Thanks again for your continous support :D

I have been reading threads for the past 4 days regarding this feature and it made me even more confused :(

Half of the threads advised that the feature was not availble, a quarter advised that the feature is readily available in the device and the rest advise that this feature can be made available with registery tweek and using the right BTH!!!

May be if can someone here (who currently uses this feature) advise us if it is working ok and what BTH is being used.

For everybody's sake here, we are talking about using Bluetooth headset to trigger Cyberon Voice Command in Eten M600 and actually issue the commands via BTH.

For your Darius the BTH that was used in the test was the SE HBH-622, which I believe supports handsfree and should be ok to work with voice recognition software. I have been using it was SE P910 and K750 with great success!!!

Regarding your question about the upgrade, It's a Yes!

The Agent in Dubai is willing to upgrade the device as they're so curious themselves to know if this feature actually works :|

Any thoughts until then will be highly apprfeciated!

To be honest, I'm not too surprised at that. The operation of every headset is unique in nature, so to see such a mixed response among the users is quite understandable.

May be if can someone here (who currently uses this feature) advise us if it is working ok and what BTH is being used. For everybody's sake here, we are talking about using Bluetooth headset to trigger Cyberon Voice Command in Eten M600 and actually issue the commands via BTH.

If you want a headset that works the way you've described, there is the Logitech Mobile Freedom. That's the one I'm currently using with my M600, with no need for registry hacks whatsoever.

For your Darius the BTH that was used in the test was the SE HBH-622, which I believe supports handsfree and should be ok to work with voice recognition software. I have been using it was SE P910 and K750 with great success!!!

Almost all Bluetooth headsets would support the hands-free profile (HFP), but it doesn't necessarily guarantee compatibility with a device. Your best option from here would be to test your current headset with the salesperson's upgraded M600.

I have a couple of connection queries that you folks might be able to help me with.

I am trying a wireless connection with a Speedstream router. It is set up for infrastructure, open with a 16bit wep key. When I switch on wireless on the M600 it immediately tells me I have a connection (wlan utility), gives me the network name etc. However the icon at the top of the screen shows the two arrows going back and forth and after a minute or so I get a screen saying the network key is incorrect, enter the correct key. I have tried entering the key on that screen to no avail. If I then go to the config setting for the network, in the network key tab, the box with "the key is automatically provided" is ticked. So I untick it then enter the WEP key and try and connect again. After a minute or so I get the "network key is incorrect" again. If I go back to the config screen the automatically provided box is ticked even though I unticked it. If I keep doing this it sometimes connects but its a occasional event.
BTW at home with a D-link router it works fine.

The next query is with Start, Settings, Connections, Connection Wizard. If I click on this I get a box that says "Select a region" but I have no choices. Is there a trick here??

Thanks in advance

I am trying a wireless connection with a Speedstream router. It is set up for infrastructure, open with a 16bit wep key.

A 16-bit WEP key? Try a 64-bit or 128-bit one, which is the standard these days. If the latter, set it to 13 ASCII characters, and let your router auto-assign IPs (if possible).

Any luck?

I don't have any available choices either. Perhaps a future ROM update will correct that.

Oops I meant 64 bit. If I try 128 I have to set a 26 digit key (a SpeedStream thing) which the m600 won't let me do.
I need to do a bit of looking to find "auto assign ips". No joy yet.
Ofcourse I could just bin the SpeedStream and use a D-Link!

That's a HEX key, rather than an ASCII key. I'm not sure if your SpeedStream router will allow you to switch between the two types, but I know the D-Link routers are capable of doing it.

Ofcourse I could just bin the SpeedStream and use a D-Link!

That could be the best option. 8) I've messed around with a lot of routers before, and I've always found the D-Link routers to be one of the best.

Its HEX or nothing with the SpeedStream as far I can make out. I know for sure that the D-link is set up with an ASCII WEP key. Could this be the problem with the M600 to SpeedStream link ie the M600 WEP key is ascii and the SpeedStream WEP is HEX. Might explain why the I keep getting the incorrect WEP key message.

That's a possibility. See if you can convert your current HEX key using this site, (http://centricle.com/tools/ascii-hex/) then input the value of the ASCII output on your M600. Note, on that site, you'll have to insert a % sign every two characters, including the start, and excluding the end. For example: %48%49%4a%4b, etc.

One last note before I bin the SpeedStream, I can actually connect if I swap the "connects to" setting from "The Internet" to "Work" and then back again while the M600 is going through the connect cycle. I still have to enter the WEP key a couple of time during the process but eventually the M600 will connect.

Here a really geeky question.

Can i connect my M600 with a projector and run a power point presentation or even just show what is on screen?

be great if this was the only thing I needed to take to a presentation and not worry about firing up. a laptop 8)

apart from average phone quality with people on the other end hearing themselves echo, the eten has done me good. I am working on the echo issue

Can i connect my M600 with a projector and run a power point presentation or even just show what is on screen?

Definitely. The M600's connector doesn't have video-out support, but there are alternatives. Since most card add-ons are CF-based and the M600 doesn't have a CF slot, I'll leave that out of the equation.

I was thinking more of a Bluetooth add-on for a projector such as the iGo Pitch Duo. (http://www.mobilityelectronics.com/handheld/presentation/pitch-duo.htm) Mauricio from Geekzone has a nice review of it here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=3730

apart from average phone quality with people on the other end hearing themselves echo, the eten has done me good. I am working on the echo issue

If you haven't yet updated your ROM to 0171, you should. It does improve voice quality in some areas, though it's not a guaranteed fix for the echo issue (which, oddly enough, I've never experienced).

For what it's worth, the G500's keys are backlit, so E-TEN has certainly recognised the need for it. I'm sure their future products will incorporate the feature.

I had the same problem and symptoms with my m600 on my home network with a Belkin Pre-N router. iPAQ 5555 and Toshiba e830 have no problem with the network. I finally fixed it by disabling the 802.11e QoS setting on the router. Maybe your Speedstream router has a similar setting?

Yes, Expansys is the authorised Pocket PC Techs reseller in Australia. It's odd that they aren't selling the M500 screen protectors here; I guess the E-TEN devices are still relatively unheard of.

Your best bet would be to contact Expansys ([email protected]) and ask them if they can put a special order through for the M500 WriteSHIELDs. Otherwise, contact Pocket PC Techs (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~_No_Unit-0~area~contact_us.htm) with a similar request.

Hello Darius!

A couple of questions please:

1) File Explorer (Native Application)

For some reason suddenly yesterday, as I was trying to run this application, it got stuck at windows for minutes and I had to presist exiting application and ending through tasks. It said everytime in tasks that File Explorer is no responding. Tried this at leat 10 times with soft resets and all, but to no avail.

I even looked at the responsible files and I can see in Windows (Using Task Commander File Explorer) and I can see fexplore.exe and ink files.
Am I missing any other files to run this program. I am not very desperate on this, as the alternative are really better (GS Finder and Task Commnader), but very curious to know the reason for this!!! :?

2) MP3 as ring tones:

I followed all instructions in all threads but to no avail!!! I placed the mps files in My device under windows and under Rings in Windows. I also added them through the add ring application in Eten. All what I ended with is that I can see mp3 as I am selecting the ring tones, but can not review or choose, as it takes me back to the default windows ring tone?

Am I missing anything here, or is there an extra reg tweak to successfully implement the changes.

Many thanks Darius!

It does sound like some sort of corrupt or missing program files, probably caused by a buggy third-party application. Unfortunately, there's not much of a solution here, other than to restore from a working backup file (if you have one), or to hard-reset.

I feel messing around with each program, trying to see which one is the cause, can get very tedious.

Windows Mobile doesn't natively support the use of MP3s as ringtone files. You'd be better off using a third-party utility such as Ringo Mobile. (http://www.electricpocket.com/products/ringo-mobile.html) Otherwise, stick to using WAV, MID or WMA.

Where do I get the back up file? Do you create this as you go like in WIN XP (Restore Point)? and if yes, how do you create one?

If I do a hard reset would I lose the programs on my MMC card, providing that I remove it before the hard reset? You see, I have most of my programs in the MMC card, is this adviseable?

You need a third-party utility such as Spb Backup: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en

It includes a wizard, so the process of backing up is relatively straightforward. There's no real point in creating a backup file now though, since your system files are a little messed up. But do keep it in mind when you next hard-reset your device and start over.

If I do a hard reset would I lose the programs on my MMC card, providing that I remove it before the hard reset? You see, I have most of my programs in the MMC card, is this adviseable?

Your program files will still be on there, but the registry entries which are required for the proper functioning of the application will be wiped with the hard-reset. So, in short, you need to reinstall all your applications again.

Darius, after reading your very persuasive review I purchased an M 600 which I bought from Ebuyer.co.uk.

Just tried to download the latest ROM from the ETEN.CH support site and after filling in a form giving the EMEI, purchase details, etc, got switched to a page that said I was not entitled to the ROM upgrade!!!

Below is a flavour of the message:

"Your mobile device was not distributed by our company. We are sorry, we can't give you any access to the free official support of qtek.ch. But your can call 0900 444 445 (CHF5.50/Min, access from CH only).

Please get in touch with your dealer. We suggest that you buy your next device from us directly or from any of our customers, like this you'll avoid any problem with the support. A part of our distribution margin is dedicated to the official support, we really can't give a support for all other devices."

Given that Ebuyer is a global reseller, and that presumably ETEN have some responsibility for their products irrespective of who sells them, I find the above quite patronising and really quite concerning.

Can you shed any light on this?

It appears E-TEN has limited access to the eten.ch FTP to local Swiss customers only. Your best bet would be to contact E-TEN (http://www.etencorp.com/contact/index.php) and ask them for a link to a UK reseller site which hosts the ROM update.

You've bought your device from a proper reseller, so you should be entitled to ROM updates 24/7. Hammer that point into the E-TEN staff if you can.

If you still have further problems getting hold of an update, let me know.

I can't give a firm date yet, but I can tell you that the next ROM is due soon. One of the new additions is Skype 2.0 - so you no longer have to download it separately and install it.

I haven't tried MiniStumbler, but WiFiFoFum (http://www.aspecto-software.com/xoops/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=1&amp;lid=4) should work. Most scanners will function across a wide range of ARM-based processors, including the Samsung line.

I was also wondering if the external antenna socket has a duel purpose, eg if you wanted to connect an antenna for WLAN or GSM.

As far as I'm aware, the M600 doesn't have an external antenna socket. Where did you hear that from?

Hi Darius,
Thanks for the quick response. I`ll take that back about the external antenna socket, must have got mixed up with another mobile phone, spent to long on the computer last night, LOL.
Would have finished off the M600 nicely if it had a antenna socket and an FM radio as well. Maybe ETEN will think about it in future models...

Is the M600 still your PDA/Phone of choice?

I'm still using it now and lovin' it. There isn't really anything currently in the market that screams out at me. Sure, a thumb-board device would be nice, but it's not a do-or-die feature for me. Everything the M600 does, it does well, and it's darn fast too. :)

and is this the longest you have kept one without switching, or is this just the beginning of your relationship with the M600?

No, I've had other non-Phone Edition devices for longer, but that's not to say my M600 won't outdo that record. I think I'll be using it for many more months to come.

I have had and i-mate k-jam for about 3 months now and while I do use the keyboard, the slow processor is killing me.

That was the only thing holding me back. The K-JAM looks great, but while the OMAP CPU works well and gives the device excellent battery life, I had my doubts over whether it'd serve me well, considering I'm a heavy multitasker.

Thanks, I do use the thumb board, but the speed on the HTC is killing me. I tend to like keeping my email and pocket informant open. When switching with another program open the thing just grinds to a halt.

I think I will be making a drive into the city tomorrow to pick one up. (the guys at www.welectronics.com are on the north side of Chicago, about a 20 minute drive)

Someone was asking about them, I have bought a bunch of phones from them (razr, D500, K-jam, the qutek i have now, and a bunch of others.) I have this addiction where I cant keep a phone for more than a few months before the gods of eBay command me to sell it and try something new.

ROM 0175 includes Skype 2.0.0.51 - the same one currently available on the Skype web site. (http://www.skype.com/download/skype/pocketpc/) On the positive side, if you're worried about the extra memory consumption, you can uninstall the bundled version of Skype; it appears in Add/Remove Programs.

2) Is true that the new ROM execlude the AKU (using bluetooth headsets) to listen to music feature?????

Exclude? In short, yes and no. The M600 does not yet have AKU 2.0, but it does have A2DP/AVRCP, which is what enables stereo audio and remote functionality for Bluetooth headphones.

3) SPB Backup Manager

I have studied all products but would like to confirm few things:

When you perform a hard reset and lose all your applications and registery amended enteries, where from can the restore point be retrieved
and the actual backup manager application for the matter?

Do you install the application on your SD as well as the backup file? Then What happens if the SD get corrupted? Do any of the above utilities have restoration ability through PC or laptop?

Which of the above supports ROM upgrade in a better way and finally your own personal thoughts in general on what suits the WM5 M600 best!

Correct.

When you perform a hard reset and lose all your applications and registery amended enteries, where from can the restore point be retrieved

You can restore immediately following the hard-reset. Spb Backup, for example, creates backup files as self-extractable EXEs. So, all you need to do is open up File Explorer and tap on it. You don't need to have Spb Backup installed to restore.

Do you install the application on your SD as well as the backup file? Then What happens if the SD get corrupted? Do any of the above utilities have restoration ability through PC or laptop?

No, you don't need to (rather, shouldn't) install the application on your SD card.

Which of the above supports ROM upgrade in a better way and finally your own personal thoughts in general on what suits the WM5 M600 best!

If what you're implying is whether you can restore a backup file after a ROM upgrade, the answer is yes, but it's recommended that you don't. It doesn't matter which backup application you're using, cross-ROM backup/restore jobs have the potential to cause major system issues, since every ROM upgrade introduces new system files and patches old ones. If you restore from an older ROM, you're simply messing around with system stability.

Hello Darius and all Eten and WM5 users......

It was previously thought that WM5 and the M600 for that matter do NOT support mp3 as ringtones.....well, I found away around this without having to purchase any 3rd party software.....

Try this out......

To be able to use mp3 as ring tone you must associate the mp3 file format with the native WM5 media player, which is of course Windows Media Player...After installing other music players such as Mort player or Pocket Music, they usually associate themselved with mp3 files in attempt to be your default player....

Associate mp3 files back to WMP and you have got yourself the mp3 ringtones features. You can use GS Finder, Total Commander or Pocket Tweak to change file association...

Good luck

Darius, I have had my M600 for a couple of weeks now and mostly love it!

The main thing that gives me major grief is the performance with the BT earpiece (I'm using the LT Freedom).

The sound is just diabolical and callers tell me it's the same for them!

I have yet to see any confirmation that ROM 175 has solved this problem.

Have you seen any categorical evidence regarding this. Alternatively, do you know when ETEN/MS are going to address this well publicised bug?

Also, what is your recommendation for a good quality leather vertical flip case. I've looked at the Krussel cases - but, they all seem to have belt clips, which although removable, leave behind a large stud to snag on my jacket pocket!!

I really like the Sena cases (had two previous) but they don't make one for ETEN.

Any recommendation?

ROM 0175 does fix a few headset issues, but I'm guessing not completely. There are still some people experiencing issues, while there are also some who aren't.

I'm sure E-TEN is working hard to address it, but we'll have to wait and see what future ROMs bring us.

I don't use a case with my device, but I have looked around for them before.

There's this one at Expansys: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=127537

You might also be able to find some Hong Kong or Taiwan dealers selling cases for cheap on eBay. A friend of mine just bought one for the Axim X51v for $15 AUD, and it's surprisingly good.

Hi Darius

Just a couple of questions on Spb backup manager please!

I have purchased the program today and did a gutsy hard reset and restore and was not disappointed. It is a good program!

My questions as follows:

1) I had a couple of exe restore files with different dates in My SD and when I tried to attempt deleting either of the files, access was denied!
Is this normal?
I was only able to delete the files after hard reseting and before restoring.

2) This leads me to this questions, which is if you do a scheduled backup would a different exe file be created, resulting in several large files sitting in the SD and can NOT be deleted, unless you do a hard reset???

Many thanks

PS: Tried Sunnysoft Manager and you were right as usual!

No, you should be able to delete them without resetting. For what it's worth, I do it all the time. Make sure Spb Backup (or any other program) isn't running in the background when you delete it. Tap Start > Settings > System > Memory > Running Programs to close any minimised programs first, or use a task manager such as Spb Pocket Plus.

These are the things I NEED to do when I get my M600:

1) Update Active Sync to 4.10 (actually where do I go to get the update)

2) Update my firmware on the m600 to 1.75
What ROM are you using Darius Wey? Because I heard that 1.75 has a few problems that 1.71 did not.

1) Update Active Sync to 4.10 (actually where do I go to get the update)

It's available from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx

2) Update my firmware on the m600 to 1.75
What ROM are you using Darius Wey? Because I heard that 1.75 has a few problems that 1.71 did not.

I'm using ROM 0175. If there really are problems with it, I'm sure E-TEN will release a quick patch ASAP. But for what it's worth, I've not had any issues with it.

Any other must DO's that I am missing?

Not really. The M600 is designed to work out-of-the-box. You've already covered all the essential software upgrades. :)

ok. here goes. i just got my m600. just converted over from a treo 600. i'm liking it so far. it's got a lot of nice little gizmos. couple of issues to figure out though.
i've upgraded to the active sync 4.1, but i'm still having issues with syncing. i'm running a minor version of 0015a4. i know i have to upgrade, but that brings up the other issue. eten won't let me. i purchased my m600 from www.welectronics.com and when i went to the upgrade link for eten, it gave me that message of "you didn't buy from us, we won't help you." so where do i go to get updates?? i'm really thinking that it will solve a few problems. i've had a few times that i've had to soft reset already. it locks up. didn't wake up for alarm. at one point, i had to take the battery out, just to reset it.
another question... where do i get wififofum from? if i get the latest rom update, does it update all the past problems too? with the bluetooth v.0100, does that not allow me to listen to music over my bt earpiece? in the contacts list, is there a way to prepend all the phone numbers dialed with international codes? for example, i've got numbers stored with (xxx) xxx-xxxx. is it possible to hit a button and have all numbers begin with 001 (xxx) xxx-xxxx. also, same applies with using skype. if you go to the phone contact list, skype gives you that menu option to call it right from your phone's phone list.... but it dials it as saved, it doesn't add the "+1" to the number. any ideas? and lastly... i think, is there any instruction manual?? this is a hell of a phone, and i can kinda poke around and figure things out, but it would be a little nicer if i could read up on some stuff. for example, how do i do a rom update? (when i'm able to get it!) how do i save things? back up things? how do i do all the different resets, and what is lost with each? see... a manual would be nice! well, thanks for all the help. i know there are a lot of questions mixed up in all of this.... i just hope you can pick it apart and answer all of 'em! :D thanks again for the help!

i've upgraded to the active sync 4.1, but i'm still having issues with syncing.

You may wish to read this troubleshooting guide: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx

A lot of ActiveSync 4.x-related issues are due to poorly configured firewalls or network settings.

i'm running a minor version of 0015a4. i know i have to upgrade, but that brings up the other issue. eten won't let me. i purchased my m600 from www.welectronics.com and when i went to the upgrade link for eten, it gave me that message of "you didn't buy from us, we won't help you." so where do i go to get updates?? i'm really thinking that it will solve a few problems.

If you're having issues acquiring the update, you can download the latest from http://www.eten-users.net/

To my understanding, they download and store the latest ROM on their servers whenever a new one is released.

i've had a few times that i've had to soft reset already. it locks up. didn't wake up for alarm. at one point, i had to take the battery out, just to reset it.

That's the infamous "sleep to death" (STD) issue that plagues a few Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices. ROM 0171 and above corrects it.

another question... where do i get wififofum from?

http://www.aspecto-software.com/xoops/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=1&amp;lid=4

if i get the latest rom update, does it update all the past problems too?

Yes.

with the bluetooth v.0100, does that not allow me to listen to music over my bt earpiece?

Bluetooth v0.100? I'm not sure which specification you're referring to, but regarding music over BT: the M600 does support A2DP/AVRCP, which are the profiles needed for remote and stereo audio functionality over Bluetooth.

in the contacts list, is there a way to prepend all the phone numbers dialed with international codes? for example, i've got numbers stored with (xxx) xxx-xxxx. is it possible to hit a button and have all numbers begin with 001 (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

+ is the international dialing symbol. If you hold down the 0 key until + appears, you won't have to enter 001 or 0011 each time.

also, same applies with using skype. if you go to the phone contact list, skype gives you that menu option to call it right from your phone's phone list.... but it dials it as saved, it doesn't add the "+1" to the number. any ideas?

I think that's a limitation of Skype you'll have to live with until they release an update that adds that feature in.

and lastly... i think, is there any instruction manual?? this is a hell of a phone, and i can kinda poke around and figure things out, but it would be a little nicer if i could read up on some stuff.

There is a quick start guide in the box. You also have a CD in the box - this contains a rather lengthy manual.

wow! you are pretty good! only need a little more help with 2 things.
1: i went to that site for the rom updates, and it's giving me an error saying it can't open the page. i'm assuming this is just maybe a temporary issue that they're having. i'll try again later.
2: with the "+" dialing thing, is there a way to automatically include that when dialing out of the contacts list of the phone? i know a lot of phones have it, i'm just not sure i'm looking in the right place.

thanks again :D

2 days with my new m600 and I am loving it!

I need a good backup program. I really like Sprite Backup but it is not compatible with WM5. Any recommendations?

Also where is it a good place to download themes for my m600?

Hello Darius!

A quick question please!

I have just upgraded to 0175 and intend today to reinstall ally me programs (yet again)

In the pursue of the happy balance between performance and space, do you recommend that some programs can be installed on the SD?

Any if yes, what kind of progams are ok to run from the SD and others that must be installed in the device itself?

Many thanks
Hanney

Try Spb Backup:

I agree, Spb seems to be the best option out there at the moment.

I have tried for few days along with Sunnysoft backup manager and I found Spb far superior. I finally purchased it a couple of days ago!

I also believe that our Darius uses Spb, so that should be another positive signa!

Yes, sounds like downtime. I can access the site now. To my understanding, you also have to register on their forums to access their files section.

with the "+" dialing thing, is there a way to automatically include that when dialing out of the contacts list of the phone? i know a lot of phones have it, i'm just not sure i'm looking in the right place.

Most of it is governed by what you set as the number in the Contacts section of Outlook on the PC. For example, all my contacts have their Country/Region setting set to a particular country. Outlook automatically adds the international symbol and country code as a prefix to the actual phone number. This syncs over to Outlook Mobile on the Pocket PC, so when I dial, the "+" is already in place.

In the pursue of the happy balance between performance and space, do you recommend that some programs can be installed on the SD?

If you install a lot of programs and are dangerously close to running out of storage space, then yes, you can install a few on the SD. If you only have a set number of programs that take up, say, half the storage space, then leave it in main memory.

Any if yes, what kind of progams are ok to run from the SD and others that must be installed in the device itself?

Most can be installed on the SD, but avoid doing that with Today plug-ins, SIPs, startup applications, and background services. All of these have to load on startup, and because most devices have an SD initialisation lag of some sort, it's best to keep these in main memory to avoid loading problems when you soft-reset the device or wake it up from standby.

Alright a few dumb things I can seems to figure out:

1) I have contacts on my phone and contacts on my SIM how can I only have just one set show on my contacts? Also when I put in a new contacts can I have it lodged both in my SIM and contatcs?

2) Do you guys use Memmaid to have your internet cache files save on your SD intead of the main memory? Also if you have the cache files saved on your memory how do you clear it without a program like Memmaid? (any other programs aside from memmaid that does the same thing?

Thanks!

1) I have contacts on my phone and contacts on my SIM how can I only have just one set show on my contacts?

Not that I'm aware of. There is a SIM Toolkit application in the Phone folder of Programs. I'm not sure if it will allow you to filter either SIM or phone contacts, but I doubt it will. I'd test it out, but the application isn't compatible with my SIM.

As an alternative, you might want to move all your SIM contacts to the phone.

Also when I put in a new contacts can I have it lodged both in my SIM and contatcs?

Not automatically. But why would you want to? If it's for the purposes of backing up, you can always use an application like Spb Backup to backup your PIM data. In addition, if you keep your device synced with Outlook, you'll have a copy on your PC too.

SIM contacts lack a lot of information. Beyond a name and number, there's not much else you can do with it.

Do you guys use Memmaid to have your internet cache files save on your SD intead of the main memory?

No.

Also if you have the cache files saved on your memory how do you clear it without a program like Memmaid? (any other programs aside from memmaid that does the same thing?

Simple method is to open up the Internet Explorer options (Menu > Tools > Options), select the Memory tab, then clear any cached content.

Otherwise, you can use an application such as SKTools.

I am sure everyone uses TCPMP here, just curious what video decoder setting do you guys leave it on? For me it seems that the "GDI" decoder setting plays plays the smoothest video...any feedback?

I stick to the default - i.e. DirectDraw. All videos I play in TCPMP under that mode run very smoothly.

Did you have any trouble getting the GPRS settings to work?

Nope, it works fine for me. In fact, I was using it yesterday.

What problems have you been experiencing? Have you checked your connection settings?
