I am looking to convert DVDs to my pocket pc. I have a hp4705 ppc. I looked at the commercial ones and they look good, but is there any freeware that can be used to rip a DVD and compress it to a resonable size?

PocketDivxEncoder. PDE can also handle transcoding e.g. mpeg to divx:

Fairuse Lite (which is freeware) has a max limit of 700MB, which won't matter for your purpose. The commercial version has more options:

Do the software titles about do a compression like the commericial products? The commercial products can put about 6-8 DVDs on 1 1GB card.

Sure, both have variable compression. Fairuse actually uses a target size around which you select the other options.

Having said that, with a 4705, you'd really be wasting the potential of that gorgeous VGA screen. Personally, I've almost ceased using any kind of extra compression at all - 700MB@640x480 gives a fantastic viewing experience.

I agree w/hishamh and fairuse light. Great software and easy to use.

I've been using FairUse but can't get a file that will play on my ipaq 4150. It plays fine on my desktop by not on my 4150. What settings and player should I be using?

For your pocket pc you should get the free and excellent tcpmp. As far as settings on Fairuse go, I use the auto configuration settings wherever possible. The few choices I make are the resolution: I have vga so I choose as close to 640x480 as possible. If you have qvga choose 320x240. For sound go w/mp3 96. Let us know if you need more help.

Has anyone tried this software for encoding movies for your ppc? It looks promising, but i can't find any directions, so it's trial and error getting it to burn right. Anyone have any instructions/guides for it?

Thanks in advance!

You might have tried a search of the forum first. In any case, there's a thread here (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47481&) with a link to a good tutorial (http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?p=1035192#post1035192).

What makes you think I didn't do a search first before asking my question? I did search, but didn't get any hits. The link you have is for a tutorial for Fairuse, not the SOMPY software.

Still looking for help!

Well, gee, how am I supposed to know that when you post in a thread that's discussing Fairuse and doesn't mention Sompy at all?

I did list it under POST Subject. I just forgot to mention it in the post.
