I just got the Siemens SX 66. Great phone, and man, has it revolutionized the time I use to sit on the john!! 8O

Anyways, I wanted to get into reading books and such on my phone because my job involves alot of sitting and waiting. So I was browsing this forum and found the thread about the Russian web books. I got them downloaded and unzipped. Great, they're Word docs! So I put them onto my 1gb SD card, pop it into my phone and try and open them. Seems that anything over 1k I can't open. It says that DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE FILE, AN ACCESS ERROR WAS ENCOUNTERED WHILE OPENING THE FILE.

So here are my questions.

1. Where can I find all these different ebook readers? Which one is thought to be generally the best?

2. I know that the eBook readers will have their own format. What is it? Whats the extention? .???

3. How do I convert these word files to the ebook reader format?

4. What about bookmarks? How do I bookmark where I was at in Pocket Word? How to in other readers?

5. Any other sources of ebooks like that russian site? I own most everthing I'd want to read. Like Clavell's Shogun. Got 4 different copies, but I'd love to read it again and have it on here. I got it, but just cant open it due to storage.

Thanks in advance.

hmm ... "that russian site" is unknown to me.
i either buy them at fictionwise/mobipocket, or i find them in various IRC channels.

anyways, your questions:

1) find different ebook readers?
the major ones are mobipocket (http://www.mobipocket.com) (extension .PRC), eReader (http://www.ereader.com/) (extension .PDB) and of course microsoft's reader (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/default.asp) (extension .LIT)
then there are a bunch of others, that support one or more ebook formats, sometimes even their own.
here i'm not too firm on the subject, someone will help you there :)
which one is the best is up to you ... opinions vary.
i'd go for mobipocket or msreader

2) answered above

3) mobipocket and ms reader have converters available. they plug in to word, add a little button and you can convert any doc to .PRC or .LIT

4) bookmarks? in word, i can't immagine setting bookmarks on your mobile device.
but the great thing about the dedicated ebook readers is, they remember where you were.
you can add notes, bookmarks, sometimes even drawings.

hope i was able to help you.

The Russian website is a download site for illegally pirated books, mentioned in these forums some months ago.

Both MS Reader and Mobipocket reader support bookmarks, annotations, drawings - whatever you need really. The methods differ, but the results are the same. I'm not sure about Mobipocket but MS's reader add-in is here:

You could also try u-book and eReader, though I don't use either and can't comment on their use.

Give UBook a try. It can read .doc formats and even read from inside of a zipped file.

The bookmarks is done automatically, it keeps track of where you left off in the book, and automatically opens to the same page you left off at.

It is not free, but IMHO it is the best ebook reader out there. The cost is minimal ($10 or 15, something like that) and includes any updates that become available.

Download a trial (has a "buy me" page that will pop up every few pages) but it will let you get the idea.

MS Reader & uBook will take care of basically every format you can think of, and both will read books straight off a storage card for you, to save space.

http://www.gowerpoint.com/uBook_down_nf.html is the place to download µbook if you're interested, It's my personal favourite, and with all the skins available you'll probably find a look you like.

It also reads compressed files to conserve space on your device (didn't know about word docs, but I know it reads doc/pdb, text, html, rtf and unencrypted/unDRM'd eReader and Mobipocket formats).

TextMaker can edit large word docs on your PDA.

Personally, when I get ebooks that are larger than 1MB or so, I break them up into multiple files. They are easier for me to deal with that way.

Go for the mobipocket reader and maker combo. I use it and I'm very happy with it :D

And then convert that 1mb doc to mobipocket reader format. It will be of small size too. And you cant have bookmarks in pocket word, so its aint recommended for ebook reading. So go in for mobipocket combo
