After hearing all the hype about the Treos from users, I'm very anxious to get my hands on one to play with (And it might even be sufficient reason to switch carriers) - what do you guys think?

Hmmm....25.49mb of memory. That better change.

No matter how many times I read it, no matter if I see Bill Gates on stage announcing it, no matter the pictures and all, I can't get over the feeling that I have stepped into one of Raold Dhalls "Tales of the Unexpected" or some O'Henry short story that will end with a big twist.
Reality slips away.

I dunno... Just based on the form factor I've seen in screenshots and the size of Treo's that friends have, I'm still really liking my Audiovox SMT5600. I know, I know... apples and oranges... just not crazy about the devices at this point. That could change once I get my hands on one.

Am I the only one somewhat underwhelmed by this device? I'm not sure I understand what it brings to the table. How is it any more superior than an hp 6515? Why should I get excited about another square screen?

Well I've used the Treo 650 and supportrd them for a company (Good Technology).

In my opinion, the Treo is the perfect smartphone... for 1st timers and new users to the PDA / smart phone world. The Treo operates and feels like a phone wich all non geeks can relate too. The Treo can easily be operated with 1 hand and the Palm OS is straight forward and easy to use and figure out for these same non-geeks. Though the OS is inferior to Windows Mobile, that doesn't seem to matter to these folks..

Though the Palm OS is not my cup of tea, I chose to go with PPC6700 than waiting for the Treo700 because I wanted WiFi and I knew Verizon's model wouldn't have that. I also enjoy reading in Landscape which the 6700 does very well and love the size of the keyboard which is what I am usuing now to type this message.

Hmmm....25.49mb of memory. That better change. you know that is equivalent to a 64MB WM2003 device, right?

No, I'm not real excited either. Of course time will tell if Palm's touted usability enhancements somehow differentiate it from the crowd. I still hate the low res screen, just like I do on the 6515. Palm will skimp on Memory just like they have always done on the Treo line. I think this could have been a killer device, but there are just enough compromises to make this one more WM5.0 phone device in what is going to be crowded market.

Well, not really Ed. It would probably be a bit higher than that. Regardless, with storage needs now removed and RAM being totally responsible for running apps, 25.49mb is far to little. To put it into perspective, right now on my K-JAM with NO apps running it is using 20.99mb of memory. If I open just a couple of applications I'm over 25.49mb. The K-JAM shows 50.00mb, and that seems to be pretty close to the minimum that users are finding acceptable.

I am very excited!

I work for a small company that currently uses Blackberries (unfortunately, the 7750s) with Verizon. We primarily text and E-mail, so the Treo would be an excellent replacement when our contract is up for renewal early next year.

I agree with the fact that the Treo is more like a phone and of course adds the PIM functionality of WM 5. I now carry my BB as well as my iPaq 4700. Too bad ithe Treo won't have VGA.

(But wait, there's more... VZ is also getting the Moto Razrberry and BBs new devices. Decision, decisions, decisions.)

I'm looking forward to this Treo, but I am NOT going to switch carriers just to have one. There is no way I'm going to pay top dollar for a Treo, then go from my current rate plan to the same features with Verizon costing me at least $60 more every month. It is not worth it. Plus, I have a feeling that Palm is going to do something stupid concerning memory, just like they did with the Treo 650.

I pay about $75 per month for 1000 minutes, unlimited EDGE/GPRS, unlimited text messages, unlimited nights and weekends, and phone insurance. There is no way to get all of that with Verizon for under $130 per month...that's an extra $600 every year just for some fruit to ask if someone can hear him now...I'll pass.

I have both VzW and Cingular. PPC Phones function MUCH better on GSM networks than CDMA networks. I'm not certain why; but I suspect is the way the radio handles data/voice signals and integrates with the OS.

Knowing this, even tho the Treo is compelling, I'm going to pass. VzW's customer service is the WORST I've seen in the States. I have yet to try Sprint or T-Mo, but they can't be as bad as VzW. They have the most useless customer service reps I've ever bumped into.

I don't know, I've always had good experiences with Verizon's customer service. My mom told me Cingulair was the worst she'd ever seen.

Does anyone know the processor speed - it shows the series number but not the speed (as far as I can tell)?

How long will it be before the masterminds at VZW disable the screen because of the possible security risk?

I think calling it Treo-700 is definitely an overstatement. I would suggest Treo-625 instead as this unit is in NO WAY better than Treo-650:
Lower Resolution
No Wifi
Insufficient (apparently) amount of RAM.
Screen seems to be not as bright as Treo-650's. It seems to be the same screen as the one HTC puts in for HP's 6515.

I will wait for HTC Prophet to come out or will switch to HTC Universal.

Well i am surpirse no one said a word about the resolution, or I missed it somewhere.

Anyone know if it's gonna be 240 x 240 or 320 x 320?

99.9% sure it is 240x.

Which only proves what I've said for years. It isn't the hardware. It is that lame OS. :devilboy:

Until a final product is released or someone who has a final unit comes forward to discuss the memory config we can't really comment on what it does offer, unless Palm follows in their same lame tracks they do on their PoS devices and puts an insufficient amount of RAM.

As for the OS being lame, well that opinion, but its amazing how quickly the WM devices have taken off and gained in market share. Also when PalmSource actually offers an OS (next one won't be Palm OS anyways right) that can multitask then we can talk about which is lame.
