View Full Version : transferring to a new PPC

I am currently using an i-mate JAM as my primary PPC but I am about to receive a Dell Axim x51v as a replacement.
My question is really simple: how easy is it going to be for me to transfer my data/programs to the Axim?
Will I have to literally re-load all my programs, or can I just load a backup? I use Sprite Backup, btw.
My suspicions are I am going to have to build my new PPC from the ground upwards but I'm hoping there may be some shortcuts.
TIA for any advice or support

I'd like to say that it's as easy as a simple backup/restore, but unfortunately, it is not. Because backup image files created with backup software are localised to a specific ROM version of a specific device, you won't be able to copy it from Device A to Device B and restore it. The only real way for you to "transfer" all your data/programs is to reinstall it manually.

Hmmm. Pretty much figured this was the case. You know, it wasn't this difficult moving from one Palm device to another but then maybe the applications weren't as complex/
Thanks for the pointer, I guess that's a day I can write off!

There are a couple of shortcuts that help, but you still have to reinstall your 3rd party apps.
If you delete the partnership with the Jam, you can then reuse that name. Be sure to keep the sync folder when you delete the partnership, then when you setup the new partnesrship with the same name all data that was in your "My Documents" folder will now be on the new device. Once you have connected, go to tools/add remove programs. You can then just run down the list and check the apps you want installed.
Reloading really isn't all that painful. ;)

Be sure to keep the sync folder when you delete the partnership
Are you automatically given the option when you delete the partnership or do you have to preserve it in some way?
Thanks for the help

Yes. When you delete the partnership you are then asked if you want to delete the sync folder as well. Say no.

Rebuilding a PPC (or building a new one I guess) is not that hard or time consuming as long as you have all your install files saved in one folder on your computer and all your registration/unlock codes saved in an easily-accessible spot also. Never takes me more then an hour or so to reinstall everything and that's with checking email and surfing in between :)

I agree, that is in fact what I have on my PC. In fact, starting from now I am about to reload. Be interesting to see the time of my next message (if I don't stop to watch TV or play my guitar or something:-)
Thanks for all the help from everyone

Since you're moving to a Windows Mobile 5.0 device, I suggest backing up maybe after every one or two applications installed. Older programs running on Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition might not run as expected on Windows Mobile 5.0, so in the event that something goes wrong, you'll have a backup to revert to (saving you the pain of starting all over again).
Good luck! I'm sure you'll enjoy what the X51v has to offer. :)

In the end it took about 2 hours (of which 50% was wait time as applications loaded) to get about 80% set up.
The other 20% took a lot longer but hey that's the old 80/20 rule coming into play.
I followed all the suggested steps and they certainly helped out.
I do have a few questions about the Axim, hence my new message elsewhere.......

None of your Palm programs are going to natively run on the Pocket PC, so you will have to manually install any Pocket PC programs you wish to have on the device. As for PIM data, if you usually have it in Outlook, then ActiveSync will automatically synchronise it to your Pocket PC. Personal files such as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, text documents, pictures, etc. can be copied over manually.
