I was surprised by his e-mail since the QTEK is still a couple weeks away from full release, but I realized that the unit I was sent is a pre-production device, and the splash screen even states that it is a test unit. As a result, the QTEK 9100 had a few issues, and I was ready to give it 3.5 Geekheads (out of 5) for Quality and 4.5 for Geekness. David then told me he was shipping out an I-mate K-JAM production model, so I decided to be fair to the device and wait until I could verify whether the issues I was seeing were related to the test device. I am extremely pleased to say that the K-JAM production model is much better, and I may have found a replacement for my Treo 650."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20051009-GeekWizard.jpg" /><br /><br />Matt Miller, over from Geek.com, details a Treo 650 user's experience with both a preproduction and a release-quality Wizard. It's a long but excellent and thorough review -- just the kind I like -- with lots of pictures, screenshots and personal experiences. After reading this, I <i>really</i> want a Wizard; the only thing holding me back is the miniSD slot. If you're interested, you ought to take a look. Oh, and give him some feedback on equivalent applications on the Windows Mobile platform -- amongst others, he doesn't know of a good backup app. I wonder what you guys would suggest. :P

I agree, the mini-SD slot is definitely an unfortunate part of this phone. However, I'm finding that I'm willing to accept it. Considering the size and all the functionality that HTC packed into this thing, there really are worse things that could have happened with the memory slot. I haven't invested tons of money into other memory cards yet, so I'd be willing to buy a mini-SD for the Wizard. 1GB cards can be had for $70 on newegg.com, which isn't a bad deal in my book.

And to comment on two other aspects that some find limiting (200MHz processor and QVGA screen), both of these situations adds to better battery life. And from the data in the review, I can handle a 10 hour battery life playing MP3's! I only have a 1GB CF card in my ipaq right now, and it definitely doesn't get 10 hours either! So, all in all, I'm thinking the Wizard is a slam dunk. Well done HTC!

anyone have any +/- for QTEK vs. i-Mate? I read QTEK was not alloy casing but also pre-production. does anyone know if that will be the case with production?

a good backup app. I wonder what you guys would suggest. :P

At the moment Sunnysoft backup manager works...sort of. You need to save the bkpmgr.exe to your storage card and replace it, or execute it from there to be able to restore. When it does restore it does NOT reinstall email, email settings, or contacts, but it does seem to do everything else.....Sorry Matt, I guess I should have told you about it. :)

...btw....EXCELLENT review. Very thorough.

What's holding ME back mostly, ain't the freakin' mini-SD. It's rather the fact that the recently leaked HTC roadmap showed the 'Hermes', which will be some sort of Wizard with UMTS.
The UMTS is much more important to me, since Vodafone over here does not support the EDGE. So is guess i'll have to wait a few months more... :(

What's a brick, right? You've cemented K-JAMs together, haven't you? ;)

A brick? That's the dual-PC card expansion pack. ;)
