View Full Version : Pocket PC SMS Paired With A Bluetooth Phone
Hello! In my quest to be constantly in touch I had purchased a Treo 600 a few months back. It's a nice device but that low res screen and the lack of Windows Mobile has finally got to me.
I'm thinking or purchasing a 2400 series iPaq. I know that it comes with bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Currently, with my Treo, I get an SMS message each time I receive an e-mail from my provider (it's through Visto on Rogers). This even works with a regular cell phone.
Is there a program for Windows Mobile that will allow me to write and receive SMS messages on my Pocket PC by connecting with a bluetooth phone? Is it possible for the Pocket PC to poll the phone every few minutes to see if an SMS message has come through? I would like to read the text message, reply to text messages, and get my e-mail all with the Pocket PC and simply have the phone as the device that connects.
Thanks for your help!
SimpleSMS, not sure if it will automatically check for messages on the phone, but I remember having used one before that does. InstantSMS will connect to the phone and will wait for SMS to arrive, and automatically retrieve the message upon arrival.
If your PC has bluetooth, why not use a PC app to retrieve the messages? I'm sure there's one out there.

Yes, it's possible. There're several apps out there that have this capability. Please read http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17757 on them.

I currently use a program called IndovisiSMS (http://ivsms.indovisi.com/) on my 4155. It connects to my phone (SE T616) via BT. The program can be set up to automatically connect to the phone to check for new SMS messages at the frequency I define (from every 3 minutes on up).

I'm using Indovisi too, I've compared it to other similar programs like SimpleSMS and SMSManager, I like Indovisi the most, especially it's GUI. l'm using it with my SE K700i. Setup is very easy.

Cool, I'll test and review Indovisi as soon as I have some time.
I've tried several SMS apps over the years, even purchased three of them (SimpleSMS, SMS Manager, and InstantSMS). But before you purchase an SMS app, my two cents' worth is that no 'BT PocketPC/BT Phone' combination will come close to your Treo as an SMS Messaging device. I've never used a Treo myself, but:
1. You have to turn on your PocketPC and launch the app just to send or retrieve SMS messages. Very inconvenient. With SimpleSMS for example, I can't even assign a hardware button to the app because bluetooth should be up and running before launching SimpleSMS. So the drill is: turn on the iPaq, wait for the bluetooth icon on the tray to turn from gray to blue, then launch SimpleSMS. Should be much easier to do on a Treo.
2. The actual sending/retrieving takes longer. Should be faster in the Treo.
3. None of those SMS apps I tried worked 100% of the time with my iPaq 2210. There will always be that occasion when the Ipaq can't connect to the phone to send the message, requiring a soft reset. In my iPaq 2210, that happens after having sent a few messages... meaning everyday. And it's a pain when you have to soft reset AFTER you already composed your message. You lose time, as well as the message.
So until I can afford a converged device, I've gone back to exclusively using the phone for SMS messaging. If I have to compose a long text message, I use a bluetooth keyboard.

Yeah, I agree with you. Absolutely right. Any phone functions (call, sms, contact management) is always better, more convenient, to be performed with the phone itself. I use indovisi for SMSing long texts, mainly those that make up 3 or more SMSes. I find this way easier, coz I can view and edit the text easily. In addition, SMSing from pda allow "copy and paste", faster typing for those have qwerty keyboard (user-dependent, coz hardcore SMSer can type with mobile phone ordinary keypad like fast and furious), add emoticons, easier template texts insertion, more extensive dictionary (I guess), etc.

how do you purchase or register for Indovisi SMS?
I forgot to mention that not all SMS apps work with all bluetooth phones. For instance, all the SMS apps I tried would not work 100% with my Nokia 3650. Tried Simple SMS with my Nokia 6630 and it would not work 100% either (can't retrieve messages).
So don't forget to check for compatibility issues.

It looks great but I can get it to work, so back to Smart GSM
