I am going to convert from a palm T3 to a PPC. I am new to PPCs and have only been using the Palm for the address and calendar functions primarily.
Can someone tell me the main differences between the Dell v51 and the HP 4700. As far as I have read it really comes down to the larger screen on the HP and the extra size and weight of the HP. A second issue would be the battery life of the HP seems longer and finally the touch pad on HP (either you love it or hate it).
Are there any other big differences or things I should consider before buying one? They are about the same price in my market.

The LCD on the HP is sexier (colors are appreciably more vivid). Also, the metal case of the HP is cooler than the plastic X50/51.
The little extra screen size I like for watching movies, and the batter life is important for that as well, lest you are fond of cliffhangers.
I can't make effective use of the touchpad, but I never made use of the D-pad either so it doesn't bother me. This will be critical to gamers.
X51 has 2x ROM storage, which is nice, and WM5, which is buggy. 4700 wont have a WM5 upgrade til next year. Who really cares? The ROM storage is not a show-stopper for me because I stick data on SD cards much heftier than the additional 128MB, and the existing 85K in HP is quite sufficient for my apps I want always installed and available. With the data on the SD card, it is usually there unless I am watching a movie (I have to switch the card) and then who cares if the data's not there because I am watching the movie!
If they are the same price I would take the 4700 without hesitation. But are they? 'cause the 4700 usually is $100 more than the 50, even used ones on eBay.

I've had both--for my money, the Axim is light-years better.
The difference in the LCD quality is minimal. Unless you see them side by side, you're unlikely to ever know or care about the difference. One exception--the X51v is brighter.
The directional controls and buttons on the iPaq are just useless. Worse than useless, they tend to disrupt your usage if you brush your finger against the pad.
The Axim is much smaller, sleeker, has the newer OS (which isn't really buggy--some programs just need to be updated), a 3D accelerator/video decoder chip, is cheaper, and gets much better support from Dell than the iPaq does from HP.
From "in your market" I assume that you're not in the United States? If so, you might want to look at a Fujitsu Loox 720. It lacks some of the advantages of the Axim, but it might be a little cheaper depending on where you are.

yes, I would buy it again! This thing is fantabulous! For me, as my first device it is perfect. For my work, this is a little like bringing in the shotgun to deal with a fruitfly problem, but heck that's fun too!
Most detractions I've read are similar to 'it doesn't do XX as well as my YY device' being my first device I am blissfully ignorant as to what another one can do.
1 week into ownership the only issues I have had are ESO issues

yea axim is cheaper (during dells frequent sales), smaller, and has the intel 2700 chipset. those have me sold hands down already. the touchpad on the hp is just a gimmick, give me a regular dpad anyday. if you are worried about the plasitic on the x50, well the x50 is one ofthe most solid ppcs ive ever felt, doesnt creak or crack when you try to bend it
but alas, everything is relative to the consumer

I have had three iPaq's and loved them each in my own way but HP has gradually ruined the line starting last year when they stopped selling the 4150 and replaced it with something worse for the same price. HP no longer sells any sleek units w/ the exception of that new extremely underpowered 4150 lookalike. HP has successfully driven the coolest line of Pocket PC's six feet under. And what's worse is that they are really expensive. I just bought my first non iPaq, the Dell Axim x50v and couldn't be happier. In my opinion it has slightly better specs than the top of the line iPaq, and yet it it costs less than a mid-ranged iPaq (depending on whatever deal Dell is offering - they usually have one going on). Go Dell. HP shame on you.

Im a IPAQ owner (5455) but wont be buying any more ipaqs.
I believe Dell offers better support with a proven upgrade support that HP doesnt care about.
the Dell is way cheaper and has all the features of the 4700 PLUS it even supports VGA out to an external monitor !
Go with a Dell dude.
