OQO Releases New Model 01+ Pocketable Windows XP Device

Amongst the upgrades/enhancements, this newer model sports upgraded memory (I *assume* higher bus speed), larger hard drive, faster USB, an internal speaker, and an improved pen-based digitizer. Here's the specs at a glance: 1GHz processor, 30GB HDD, 512MB RAM, 800x480 5" display, 3D accelerated graphics with 8MB video RAM, WiFi, BT, USB 2.0, Firewire, and removable lithium polymer battery.

yes, anyone want to tell me why this device didn't have cell phone and/or gprs capabilities in the first model... let alone in this second model?!?

i'm SURE OQO could have whipped up a functioning phone program for this thing... i mean seriously, why not give this device a feature that will truly set it apart from laptops, other than the form factor? blah...

Technically this isn't a 2nd model, it's just an "update" for the first model. It was mainly put out into production to fix the bugs and problems that the model 01 had.

Seriously though. A ultra subnotebook sized device as a phone? Ummm no. I think not. That and battery life is bad enough...

What I really want to know is are they still using the Transmeta junk as the CPU or are they finally going to use an ULV Pentium M? I will NEVER even consider a device with a Transmeta CPU in it.

LOL Phone??? Make it camaflouge too. Yea, I was wondering the same thing myself...why not P-M? I know P-M is supposed to be faster... But which saves more power? The transmeta or the P-M?

I'm sorry, but the price they are asking for just doesn't make it worthwhile in my view. You can get a 2.5lb ultraportable laptop from Dell. Road warriors will take this over the OQO every time.

The OQO I see only in vertical markets in which case, the Pocket PC can easily handle those duties and at a better price/performance/features package.

It's not quite the form factor I'd want, but it's close. For me, a slightly larger screen with a higher resolution would be preferable and I'd definitely prefer the Tablet PC OS (although you can put it on the OQO and it works pretty well, or so I've read).

Still, I like the idea and hope those guys manage to sell a lot of them. Certainly this new improved version makes them more compelling than the original ones.

4.9" x 3.4" x .9" is a very small novel
Most paper backs are 7" x 4.3".
An iPaq 5550 is 5.23" x 3.3"
An HP hx4700 is 5.17" x 3.03" in.
The OQO on this basis is about the same size as a normal (eg not compact) Pocket PC - OK thicker than some, but it isn't exactly huge - an HTC Universal is 5.0" x 3.2" x 1.0" - thats bigger than the OQO and it has a mobile phone built in! Virtually everyone (else) has been drooling over that!

If I could actually afford an OQO I might buy one - but that is the only thing stopping me from doing so! :)

My thoughts exactly. I wonder if a P-M in a device this small would generate more heat, or for some other reason simply be unfeasible, but it would certainly be far more powerful and the Intel graphics would blow away the current OQO's solution.
