http://www.firstloox.org/

FirstLoox.org has just published what is believed to be confirmed details on the upcoming Pocket LOOX N500 and N520. Rumours have been flying everywhere, but it's strongly believed that the N500 and N520 will represent two of four of Fujitsu-Siemens' upcoming next-generation Pocket PCs.

The N500 will feature GPS, 64MB RAM and 64MB ROM, while the N520 goes one step further to provide GPS, 802.11g Wi-Fi, 64MB RAM and 128MB ROM. Both the N500 and N520 are to be released at the end of October 2005. Other points worth noting - the integrated GPS is based on the SiRFstar III chipset, and will include an integrated antenna as well as an optional port for attaching an external antenna. In addition, the primary hardware buttons and D-pad will be illuminated by a blue LED (always a good colour combination, in my opinion). ;) Other details have yet to be revealed, but what is known is that the N500 and N520 (and Fujitsu-Siemens' two other next-generation Pocket PCs) will be running on Windows Mobile 5.0.

I don't think either of these is a real surprise, being successors to the 400 series (big props to Fujitsu-Siemens for using the SiRFstar III GPS chipset, though 8)). It's the other two models—the successors to the 700 series—that could be really BIG. At least, I'm crossing my fingers that they will be.

Bummer this didn't come with GSM/GPRS. It would have been the perfect employee field device. I still don't see the big deal behind GPS unless you are a big time traveller or sales person. I guess there must be more than I think if a manufacturer is willing to spend the bucks to implement it.

This will make my purchasing decision a little easier now. It's the O2 Atom or the E-TEN M600!

What were you expecting? It's a mid-range device - aimed squarely at someone who wants a long running business device with GPS.

I'd say that the inclusion of GPS, WM 5.0 and 802.11g WiFi is at least reasonably interesting.

I believe you'll be happier with the features models 3 and 4 have. I'd tell you about them - but then I'd have to kill you. ;)

Frankly say, I hope there is VGA. 802.11g is excellent, but 802.11b is ok too.
At least they should keep one model with VGA. :D

This year? No. I wouldn't expect to wait too long into next though.

When they come up with a VGA version of this device then I can see myself being very very very tempted!

Well, this is the Duncan from Firstloox.org. NDA? Oh... I don't know. The mind boggles well and truly. ;)

What about the chances of a WM5 devie having all the advantages of the PL720 with built-in GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS unit, without MS BT stack and without any kind of built-in, next-to-useless, thumbboard? :)

Ah - but what have I said *here* that can't be easily deduced, or simply worked out from current rumours? After all - it is fairly obvious that FSC will introduce a replacement for the Loox 720 sooner rather than later (since they are about to release the 400 series replacement). It is inevitable that it will have VGA and be higher specc'ed than the N500/N520. That there will 4 models in total is something with numerous sources on several websites - and reveals nothing of any significance. ;)

(Plus - I've never signed an NDA in my life...! :))
