<a href="http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,122653,00.asp">http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,122653,00.asp</a><br /><br />This wouldn't be of much interest to Pocket PC Thoughts readers except many of us are eagerly anticipating the forthcoming Windows Mobile Treo.<br /><br /><i>"The plaintiffs claim that phone calls placed by the Treo 600 were indecipherable because of the poor quality of the phone's speakers and choppy delivery of the user's voice, according to the complaint. Gay cited problems with the Treo 650's software, claiming the device crashed up to ten times a day. The plaintiffs believe these problems afflict numerous Treo owners and are attributable to Palm, not the wireless carriers that sell the device, said Ira Rothken, an attorney with Rothken Law Firm and co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs, in an interview Wednesday. Each of the plaintiffs attempted to resolve their issues through Palm's customer support office, but they claim that Palm would replace their Treos with equally defective models, Rothken said."</i><br /><br />A phone crashing 10 times a day is unacceptable, but I don't know if it is a problem with the hardware, operating system or a combination. I have heard many Palm users claim that new Palm devices are far less stable than they were in the good old days of OS4 devices. I am definitely interested in a WM Treo for my wife, and she is on the Verizon network, the network rumored to get the device first. Reading this article though is making me think we won't be lining up for a new device but waiting a month or so and monitoring the boards for user experience. :|

I completely understand the sentiment of these people. The Treo 600 and 650 are really awesome designs, but they are amazingly unreliable. I am surprised this didn't happen sooner...

I had both the Treo 600 and 650 for a time and I never really had any stability problems. For the Treo 650, once I weeded out a few finicky apps due to compatibility problems with the new file system, I never had a 650 crash in about three months of use. If I were Palm, don't settle, I'd let it go to court. If they can produce witnesses who said, well, basically what I just said, it would be an easy win I would think.

As far as the call quality for the 600 goes, I didn't really have it long enough to comment on that.

We've been testing a number of Trea 650's and haven't had any issues at all with them... now the Siemen's SX66s we have been testing have been a PAIN.

We've got lots of these deployed, almost all the 600's have been replaced with 650's. We had tons of problems with the 600's (not counting the fact that their reception is poor). The 650 haven't had as many problems but still have far too many and do lock-up/reboot far too often. Being a pocket pc person I blame the os for the lockups and reboots:) The 650's do have much better reception then the 600's. - I should note, this is what I'm hearing from users and the dude who manages them.

Agreed. People will sue for the most senseless things in this country. It is a shame.

Some people settled for anything! When you paid $400+ for a unit, you expect a quality performance. I am on my 3rd replaced 650...3rd!!!
Each time it reboots at least a few times a day for no reason, locked up when you are online and another call came in, etc.

Imaging trying to load and reload personal info and softwares, not counting spending times researching why the unit is acting the way it is! For some of you who has nothing better to do, it is ok but when you need the unit to help you make a living, it costs $$$...get it!

So before you people call other idiots, think first. I finally dumped the 650 and went with another type.

Good for you if you don't care whether you've been sold a dummy or not. Others do care and want value for their money.

I used to think all palm os devices were stable. I have a kyocera 7135 that has never crashed on me but I don't use it that often. But my friend's treo crashes more than 10 times a day. Surprising and very irritating. I don't blame the guys who are suing. In fact, I sympathize with them.

In Quan's defence, there hasn't been much of a choice. Besides the few actual choices that may exist, at our company, the execs see other execs with Treo's. That's the only thing they will take. They get what they want. The company has to standardize on one thing so they standardize on Treo's. That's how we got in the hole that we are and why one of my coworkers may be on the phone with support trying to fix a problem he and at least one pres. are having right now - making the phone useless (these are 650's).

Again, I'd be willing to blame the os. I do hope that even if the screens on the 700's are unexcusably low in resolution that the phone itself is reasonably reliable unlike what we've experienced with the 600's and 650's.

The issues with 650 is not new but instead of fixing it, why are they continue to sell it as if there is nothing wrong to 'un-suspecting'' customer. We are not talking about 6 months or years down the road, we are talking about from the inception. The problems did not just show up 3 months or 6 months after purchase, it happened the moment you start to use it. How would you feel if you discovered that the car you bought is defected and yet there is no recall to have it fix nor there is an admission of defect?
I am not into lawsuit, but given the recent event that Palm is switching to
Window Mobile indicated to me that they have recognized the current OS is unstable and full of defects but don't want to spend the $$$ to fix something that they will not support in the future. Folks wake up and smell the stinks!!!

may work in some places, but not in others. around here, a new car drops more than 10% in resale value the moment you bring it out of the dealer. so you lose money by selling.

same with electronic devices.
