I've been a Palm user since the Pilot Professional, but I'm going to be getting my first PocketPC Thursday when my Sprint PPC-6700 arrives. With Palm I always had my base set of software I had to have, so I'm wondering if some of you could share your essential software with me. I went looking around a PPC software site, and so far I've decided to get these:

SPB Pocket Plus
Resco Explorer
Omega One Journal Bar
Omega One Battery Pack
Pocket Quicken
Netfront
Iilium eWallet
And then Myst PPC and Age of Empires PPC

I've never used PocketPC so I don't know if a PIM replacement is needed. Also this phone is going to have high speed internet so any apps that take advantage of that would be nice too.

Thanks in advance!

As a fellow former Palm user, welcome to the party!

You may consider Minimo vice Netfront, if for no other reason than it's free. Check out a thread in this forum on the latest Minimo release.

Hopefully, you're getting Pocket Quicken because you use the PC version. If you use MS Money 2004 or later, MS has a free download you can use.

Depending on your preferences, you may want to consider a launcher. cLaunch is one of the many out there, and I like it because it's free & easily customizable. There are many of them out there.

I did not change my PIM; that's also a subjective issue.

You may want to consider one of the many voice command programs. There's another thread comparing a few of them. I use Voice Commander & love it.

BTW, I'm just working on a generic roundup of all launchers; incl. cLaunch.

I'm sure you'll get a long list of essential apps from everybody, but here's what I install first on a new device.

PocketPlus -- very first thing
Sprite Backup -- if a version isn't already included with the device
PocketBible
PocketSlides
Trancreative Thesaurus
AIM
CodeWallet Plus
ListPro -- Ed's fave, too
MemMaid
PocketPlan
Pocket TV Listings (PTVL)
Battleship
Gin Rummy
Mobile Crossword
Monopoly
Trivial Pursuit

And, if you want to really personalize your Pocket PC, you can add all kinds of themes from sites like pocketpcthemes.com and pocketthemes.com.

XCPU Scaler - dynamic cpu speed changing as required.

Sprite Backup - #1 back solution, works like a charm.

Pocket E-sword , freeware bible with tons of bibles.

Flexwallet - password protected storage for all your bank info / paswords

I'd seriously consider dropping either SPB Pocket Plus OR Battery Pack - theres so much overlap in terms of functionality that you'd just be wasting your money. For that matter, if you get Sprite Backup Premium (which I would also second as a must have app) it also includes battery and memory meters as well, which makes Battery Pack really superfluous. I'd also second the recommendation of Memmaid - really indispensable in my opnion. You might also want to check out Safemode - it's a real lifesaver, although Pocket Plus has something similar as well.

You have a good list there. My must have programs on all my PPCs are:

Spb Pocket Plus
Wisbar Advance
Resco File Explorer
Access Netfront

Recently I added PhoneAlarm by Pocketmax for my i730 and I highly recommend this one. Not sure how good the phone app is on the 6700 but I doubt it supports all the features of PhoneAlarm.

If you use it at home, or take with your while travelling, a good idea is NoviiRemote (Deluxe or Classic - www.novii.tv ) to remotely control TV or DVD player or media centre etc from your handheld...

As far as remote controllers are concerned, I also recommend this thread (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=362809).

And memory/CPU resources too, if both are active at the same time.
