The device features an Intel 416MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, a 2MP digital camera with flash, an integrated FM radio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, USB, and a stunning 262K-colour 240 x 320 (QVGA) screen. This awesome list of specs is packed into a shell measuring in at 102mm x 58mm x 18.5mm (roughly the same size as the HTC Magician) and the device itself weighs in at 150g. The Xda Atom also includes Windows Mobile 5.0 and a new media-centred application known as O2 MediaPlus, allowing the user easy access to music, video and images through a common interface. It is still not known whether the Xda Atom sports an SD slot or a miniSD slot. RRP is tagged at S$1,348 (~US$802) and is expected to be released in early December.

Wow! Now I have a really tough choice: buy the E-TEN M600 now or the better supported O2 XDA Atom?
If the O2 has mini-SD, then there's no way I'd get it. Considering it has an FM radio and USB, which the M600 doesn't have, then it will probably have miniSD.
I'm going for the M600 at this point. I'm with T-Mobile and they don't support EDGE AND I'll have the M600 for a couple more months!

It would be near perfect for me if it had a keyboard like the Wizard. A real SD slot would be nice but I'm sure it's miniSD.
TMobile has EDGE now.

This device simply looks awesome. Hope it has an SD slot. Although, for builtin wifi, WM2005 and that slick black look, I may buy a 1Gb MiniSD http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/6541/pinkwink6vn.gif .

T-Mobile has had EDGE for a while now. <a href=http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9168>Smartphone Thoughts</a> even had a story on it a while back.
I'm getting 80-100Kbps these days with an EDGE phone.

It seems weird to me that HTC is coming out with two devices as similar as the Wizard and the Atom. There's really not a lot of difference between the two. I admit that this looks better than the Wizard, but it seems like there should be GPS or something thrown into it to make it special. I do like the inclusion of the FM radio though.
Oh yeah, HTC's really doing a good job with style these days.
Notice anything interesting?

Yeah, none of the current PPCs (or PPC phones) have made me want to drop the Mini. The Atom would though.

They've changed the long navigation "roller" with 4 buttons and a micro-joystick? As an owner of the original, I can see that this might be better.

it's not so much that they don't want to make me drop my Jam... it's more the fact that i've had this thing for a year, and they've made marginal improvements to the devices since. wake me up when something important happens.

Well I now know what I'll be upgrading to when my 12 month contract comes up for renewal! It seems a shame to put my MDA Compact out to stud - but the improvements make the Atom the only PDA I would be interested in changing to! One Sweee-eeeet device!
You can keep your Wizard and Brick (err Universal)! :) HTC rock!

None of you noticed that the o2 Xda Atom looks like the Orange SPV C600 with its keypad chopped off?

Errr - nope - cos it doesn't - other than the rudimentary resemblance that its got in common with almost all PDA's, that its got a screen with some buttons and a D pad below. :?

W 8O W! Sweet looking device. I might still get the Wizard for the keyboard but this is a viable upgrade to my imate JAM as well.

I would like to know if this device has SD or miniSD [hoping for SD]
I would also like to know if the two 'grills' are front facing stereo speakers [anyone know?]--if so this would be great!
I would also like to know if this will use 2.5mm or 3.5mm headphones [hoping for 3.55mm]

It looks like this will have a StartMenu and MediaKey [presumably for the O2 Media Thingie] appart from the send and end keys. So I guess WM5.0 doesn't need a dedicated hardware button for the new softkeys.

Yeah, the only device that has interested me is the Universal, but its size and price tag (mainly price tag) would keep it out of my reach. Its truely amazing how small the XDA Mini (and other variants of the Magician, such a perfect name!) is with the features it packs in. I was showing a friend at school and going through the list it has:
* Phone
* BT
* 1Gb Memory (using 1Gb SD)
* 1.3mp camera (which isn't toooo bad)
* Video Playback
* MP3 Playback
* WiFi (using my WiFi card)
* Email
* Internet
* MSN Messenger (or other clients)
All in such a small size. The Atom seems to incorporate my more wanted features: a bit more memory, WM2005 and WiFi!!!!

I have a Sony Ericson T610 that is suffering from age. It is incredible to me how much phones have moved on in the past couple of years. Mainly I want to use this as a phone and for skyping. But I have a couple of questions that maybe someone can answer...
- can I get a bluetooth ketboard and use Word to create documents?
- can I view DivX videos on the phone.
- can I sync it with a mac
Cheers

If you mean can the Atom do this, then the answer should be yes. There is no reason that is won't work thing a BT keyboard, it will play DivX on one of the various players available (I recommend Betaplayer) and there are sync programs for PPCs that sync it with you Mac. Need to wait until a release to be certain.
I had the T610 + iPAQ 4355 combo. Was excellent, but convergence is the ultimate!! Particularly since I got my Magician. Barely bigger than the T610 it replaced, not to mention the 4355. The Atom is supposed to be about the same size.

Thanks for the info.
I was using a Sony TG50 and my T610 - the TG50 has just died and the T610 has seen better days.
I have not used windows for ages but WM5 looks v. nice.
Its either the Atom+BT Keyboard or wait for the HP6715.
How is something like Word on a little screen?

I have used an iMate Jam for about 6 months. It has the same size screen and I find it perfectly usable. I don't use Word, but I have read dozens of books using MS Reader or eReader and don't find the screen size a hindrance.

I've been using the eten m500 for about 2 months with the intention to upgrade towards the end of the year. I'm pleased with its size and form factor.
My girlfriend has expressed interest in the m500 though I'm skeptical as to whether even it is too bigger for her. Currently she's got an ipaq 2200 and a tiny nokia.
I'll probably let her use it for a while, though I'd feel safer having WM5.0 on it first. For the persistent storage safety net.
I wonder what the HTC's codename for the Atom is. Will we see other resellers with it?
I'm still thinking the m600 for me, and I've got the one eye on the Wizard. Though the keyboard may end up being extraneous.
The Atom has potential. I think its the first HTC device announced by a carrier before us knowning the HTC codename. Hopefully its not an exclusive deal as I live in the States (the united ones that is :) )

This makes me wonder when this beauty will be available in europe....and by which vendors (Qtek or Orange prefered) after all, if its a HTC, surely all major euro brands will sell this thing.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better! Sorry E-TEN, it's O2 country for me! It will be tough waiting an extra 2 months, but I'll hang in there! If this device has miniSD, I think I can live with 1GB cards.
How's the future looking for higher capacity miniSD?

Yes - I posted its specs on the first page of this thread: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43089
The only uncertainty is whether it features an SD slot or miniSD slot. More will be revealed in the near future.

I was thinking that this may be an O2 only device if they are touting it as a media device and hooking up a media[video/music] purchase/download service unless of course most of the other suppliers will also be having this or similar services as well and also order from HTC.

More details about the Atom here (http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=61183&st=0).
It seems that it will come with a MiniSD slot. I wont complain about the different format, however it seems to be a media centric device. I've already filled up my 512mb without any music or movies. I was hoping to eventually get a 2gb SD card.
If I go with an MiniSD slot then I have to go with an expensive 1gb MiniSD.
Decisions... Decisions...
