It's actually Windows Media Player that does the streaming - the hard part is getting the exact URL of the stream. If you can get that, you should be able to listen to it in WMP on the Pocket PC...

As Jason has pointed out, PIE just passes the request along to plug-ins, like that of WMP.

Most commercial stations broadcast in either RealAudio or Windows Media. Some only use one format (like BBC - see http://www.radioshowlinks.com/display.aspx/cid/c110 ), unfortunately.

There's a third broadcast type, SHOUTcast. Few, mostly non-professional radios are using this, so don't expect a national radio corporation to have SHOUTcast streams. Mini-sized, "enthusiast" radio stations, however, often use it (see their listing at http://yp.shoutcast.com/ ). One of the best players to play SHOUTcast streams is GSPlayer ( http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/ )

Back to RealAudio and Windows Media, the most prevalent formats:

RealAudio (RealOne)

You can only listen to RealOne streams if your device isn't under a firewall / in an otherwise restricted local area network (including being connected to the internet via ActiveSync). That is, it must directly connect to the Internet and must be at least in a DMZ ( Demilitarized Zone; see for example http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/networksecurity/g/bldef_dmz.htm on this.)

In a lot of causes, it just won't work. That is, don't expect as broad a compatibility as with, say, Nokia phones. Nokia phones have fully-fledged RealOne clients; Pocket PC's only have a severely crippled version.

You can download the RealOne player from, say, http://www.realnetworks.com/industries/mobile/operators/products/player/ppc/index.html

According to, say, http://www.pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12215 , for example, BBC streams can be played on a Pocket PC. (I haven't tested this myself.)

Windows Media: Pocket PC's starting from WMP7 are able to play WM streams. WM2003+ devices can play WM9 streams; older devices cannot (only WM8 streams, which aren't that often used any more.)

You can find the list of contents available in your country at http://www.windowsmedia.com .
