Why is this news? Well, this would be the first PDA we know of to support Bluetooth 2.0 (as opposed to 1.1 or 1.2).

The main enhancements to Bluetooth in version 2 include higher data throughput, faster transmission speed, and lower power consumption. More information regarding the differences in Bluetooth versions can be obtained via Wikipedia. Additionally, we have word out of the::unwired that O2 Germany has officially announced support for the HTC Wizard (aka - O2 Xda mini S).

If this is true, it's great news. I already have my Wizard preordered so it really doesn't matter either way to me, but I know a lot of people were wondering about it.

How could it not be? The Bluetooth Org certified it as BT 2.0. It is unlikely, looking at the docs, to be an error.

This is all good news. From what I know, Bluetooth 1.1 should be able to support fidelity headphones just fine which is my only concern for higher throughput.. I really like the lower power consumption feature. Anything wireless seems to really suck up battery life.

Unfortunately, I'm getting the E-TEN M600!

This is great to hear and would make a fantastic addition to its specs. And granted, maybe it will have it (instead of just BT 1.2) and maybe it won't. But providing the Wizard does ship with 2.0, why wouldn't the Universal (HTC's flagship PPC Phone) be certified and ship with 2.0?

That sort of thing makes no sense to me. They should make things like this the same across the board.

you think that's unfortunate? I've been pleading with my carrier to get a free (or heavily discounted) XDA mini, but they won't budge. They're giving a Nokia 6630 instead!

On a similar note, why doesn't the HTC Universal have EDGE which the Wizzard has? Sure UMTS is great and all, but it's practically useless here in the US right now.

Perhaps because it isn't being sold in the US and isn't designed even for US UMTS? Why, therefore, should it have EDGE - when it has the superior UMTS that can be used in its target countries?

At and educated guess - the Universal was put in for certification before BT 2.0 was practical - the Wizard after. If you scan the BT Qual site (and check out new releases) you can see this happening (seems to have been around July/August that there was an explosion of BT 2.0 in smaller devices).

I was considering that... I suppose my question was more on the rhetorical side... technology can just be frustrating. You want the best for your money, but I know how things like this can happen. Companies design things and the moment they finish and announce something, new versions of the components stroll on by.

Processor architecture and speed aside, I actually think the Wizard is a pretty neat device. I'm looking forward to its release. :)

I'm still watching the wizard myself though so far it would appear that the Eten m600 is my upgrade of choice.

I guess I'm just trying to hope that HTC had some method to their madeness for using a processor with such a low clock speed.

Perhaps the Ti OMAP architecture is soooo vastly superior that it blows away any of the 400mhz arms. 8O :shocked!:

You know this Bluetooth advertising thing has me a little ticked.... I know that in some instances it doesn't matter greatly I.E. GPS recievier in a car with a PDA or Cell phone in the same office with bluetooth headset - but since they advertise they are bluetooth why don't they not only advertise version but also advertise class!

I remember I made my first mistake when I bought a bluetooth Dongle for my laptop (class 1) to find out that my PDA has a lower class (class 2) bluetooth and I can only use it within proximity to my laptop not roam around the house freely like with Wi-Fi. Also remember the bluetooth pair only works on the lowest signal so having a bluetooth class 1 device but then having a class 2 device won't give any more range to the pair you still have to be in class 2 distance.

Now I know and I do thorough research before buying the bluetooth devices I desire but I really think class should be a required on the box item. (Also just a hint those of you writting reviews if you added in class of bluetooth onto your review it might help as well)

does anyone else think that Bluetooth atm is bollocks?

soooooooo slowww, between mobiles you might as well be using dialup.

I hope this 2.0 standard brings a seachange to the way BT operates, both speed and connectivity-wise

I have no Bluetooth or ActiveSync at the moment (in the middle of an upgrade) and let me tell you, Bluetooth beats the pants off of infrared. As soon as I get Office 2003 and a Bluetooth module, I'll be a very happy camper!

The new bluetooth spec does have higher speed transfer rate (I have seen reports of anywhere from over 3x to up to 10x faster) but its still lacking behind Wifi.

In all speed never bothered me much though as I know most emerging versions of technologyies start out at low speeds then "ramp up" I.E. USB 1.1 vrs 2.0, Wifi 11 vrs 54 vrs 108 (theoretical speeds of course), IDE ATA interfaces, Scsi interfaces, yadda yadda yadda

I am mega disappointed at the use of an OMAP 200 Mhz processor. Does this thing run backwards ? What are they playing at ? I have the Jam which is superb ... but want WM2005 ... maybe somebody could solder the extra 64MB into the ROM for me so I can upgrade it ?

200 Mhz is such a backward step (Jam is 400+)...

I hope we can finally put this 200MHz vs. 400MHz - apples and oranges comparison - to bed. Take a look at a benchmark table found on mobile-review.com, where the Wizard outperforms the Magician, 200 vs 400, OMAP vs. XScale.

Thank you, and good night!

Interesting. I'm glad we've got some actual numbers now.
Perhaps the only thing I need to consider now is whether I can deal with miniSD.
I suppose they did it for size but I was all ready to pick up a high speed 2GB SD card.

Edit: Does anyone know where the miniSD slot is? Is it externally exposed or under the battery?

It's external. On the top.

Only if it were SD...
