Skype for Pocket PC provides you with the freedom to enjoy Skype on the go: in the home, office or outdoors - wherever there is a high speed data network (WiFi, 3G or EDGE) which your Pocket PC can connect to. So, find your favorite WiFi hot spot and Skype away. If you get an EDGE or 3G enabled Pocket PC with a high speed data plan, you can really start going places, while talking to your buddies for free."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20050827-Skype.jpg" /><br /><br />The team at Skype have just released the v1.2 Beta of Skype for Pocket PC. The new release offers improved voice quality, support for other languages, and support for voicemails, Skype to Skype calls and Skype Out calls. Additional information can be found at the <a href="http://share.skype.com/share/products_and_services/">Share Skype</a> page. Note there are now two versions available - a <a href="http://download.skype.com/pocketpc/SkypeForPocketPC_1_2_0_04_beta.exe">generic ARM version</a> and an <a href="http://download.skype.com/pocketpc/SkypeForPocketPC_1_2_0_04_beta_xscale.exe">XScale-optimised version</a>. Remember, this is still a beta, so bugs may be expected.
Any chance this one will offer bluetooth support?

I just tried the Beta on my Dell Axim X50v and was unable to initiate my Wireless on the PDA after the installation. I had to do a HARD RESET and restore from my daily Sprite Backup.
Best be prepared when installing this on any PDA with a backup prior to installation.
I'll notify Skype now.
Brad
Update: The Forum Article at Skype has an entry by an X50v user where it works. I guess it is dependent on what you already have installed...

Anyone else find that installing this version screws up their machine?
This and the last version crash my E830 when I try to run it in SE_VGA moce. The first version of pocket Skype did not.
This time around I had to do a full restore as all my dialogue boxes were displaying at about 1 point text.

So the question is-- will the upcoming HTC Wizard work with Skype since it has an apparently slower processor than the current Jam?

I've never tried skype on a PDA but I use it frequently on my laptop. I think I'll try an older version since the beta seems to be messing up the PDA's in this thread.

After installing Skype for PPC it didn't work. Then, after hard reset & system restore, somehow it works now. However, my Pocket IE screwed up.
Now I can only access pages that doesn't have SSL in it.
Can't even access any webmails (yahoo or gmail or hotmail) or even google.
Does anyone encounter this problem? Is there any remedy?
Thanks.

One of the worst side-effects I encountered was all of the PPC messageBox dialagus and many program dialogues were so small as to be unusable. The only way to fix it was a complete hard reset and restore from backup. A simple resore without the hard reset did not cure the dialogue problem.

Just to balance out the comments, I installed this beta on my Asus MyPal A730W, and it works just fine. (No hard resets or anything like that.)

I have a e830... after loading the new beta and launching the application it just sits there locked on my device. I can soft reboot and get my device back up and running, but Pocket Skype is not working.
I did have a previous version working... but now I am confused if it was the last version or the one before it. Since I do not use it much... and I do upgrade when new releases are out, I do not remember if I tested the last one.

Ok.. I take it back. Not sure why it would lock up my device previously... but it seems to working now. The only things I did was to go back to the original GAPI... but that should not make any difference. I do know that the advanced GAPI that I use by Picard does create some issues with some of my applications, but to be fair if fixes a few issues in other applications.

What is GAPI?

In this case stands for "Game Application Programming Interface", the lastest release from from Microsoft I believe is v1.2 which was released back in April of 2003 to correct some bugs.
Picard released a new tweaked version sometime in November of 2004 that vastly increased the speed for some games. It also has a side affect on others... I have several that will not play with this api running but with other applications it fixes some serious issues.
If your interested you can find it here...

The one that says it is for the x50V at the bottom. As you can see it has not been developed since 2004, but I believe there are other more recent versions available... tweaked by users of Morphgear.

You're in a bit of a muddle then :confused totally:

I am... I was... errrr... maybe not... no I am ok. I think... hmm... what was it you were asking?
It is pretty clear right now... I have the latest version working so I am good. Now if you ask me sometime after the next release I would not be so sure.
