E-mail notifier beep does not work - any ideas?

I receive e-mails fine by POP3 but the notifier sound does not work. I've tried using different alarm sounds for it and even a hard reset, but all I get is silence.

I have an ipaq 1935, Spanish language edition.

An internet search produced a couple of cases like this. Any solutions? Am I overlooking anything obvious? (I've set the volume to full, ticked all the boxes in the volume set up, etc.)

Oh yes, everything works fine otherwise, and when I choose the e-mail notifier I can test it at set up and it is loud and clear.

Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong myself. Let's see: I sometimes leave the inbox screen open on my desk while I work. It's set up to check for new mail every minute. The mails appear, but no sound goes off. I have tried minimising the screen (when you don't know what's normal you use your imagination) but still no sound.
