after almost three months of using my Dell x50v, this morning, i dropped it while inside a crowded subway...
though i was able to pick it back up, am now very much anxious/worried of what may trouble it may cause
well, it was about a 3-foot drop from my waist (now i knew i needed a case with a belt strap instead of a belt clip)... the Ax has a leather Krussel case, and the lid that covers the screen area has pockets filled with a CF card and some business cards (quite padded)...
* though im a little confident that everything is okay (no screen cracks, no one seemed to step on it, etc.) - that dread is still there
so, has any of you ever dropped your PPC? if so, how many times already? any serious problems, etc? what were the conditions - either protected by a hard case or just a simple leather case?
regards!!!

by the way, how good does a leather case (especially the EXPENSIVE ones) protect any handheld device?
also, are some PPCs built to be more durable than others? i mean, a higher prices HP hx4700 compared to a cheap Dell x50v?
regards!

Dropped my once in 2 and a half years. It is an Axim X5. From about the same height. Had it in an EB case. No probs. still ticking after all this time. Guess it's just about an antique now. :)

One year ago, i was in a bus and i was sleeping. My ipaq was on my lap and suddenly i wake up and stand. The ipaq flies a long way and lands. At first the device didnt start up, but then i realized that i had turned of the screen. the device works fine since then

When it comes to my HTC Blue Angel, I am the original Mr. Fumble-Fingers  : I have lost count of the number of times I have dropped it. The case is scratched and, in a couple of places, dented. It has hit the deck from waist and head height (off the roof of the car 8O ) both protected (original O2 case and now a Krusel leather case) and unprotected. It has hit hard enough to ping the SD card out of the slot on more than one occasion, and the stylus almost always flies out of its hole on impact. And yet... it still works fine 8)
I wouldn't advocate the treatment I give the thing (and I would be nicer to it if I could - honest), but I wouldn't get too concerned about the occasional knock.

i threw my hp 2210 around all the time (most of the time with it in the case), like far chucks desk when im lazy to go over there to put it down. if it doesnt have a broken screen then im not too worried =P

I carried my iPaq in my back pocket in an aluminum case and once I did stumble and fall directly on it! I was terrified (as I am no lightweight) to take it out, but there was no damage at all. In addition, I had dropped it a time or 2, also in the aluminum case, and sustained no damage.
I like the aluminum cases, since the corners of the device are protected, and in many leather cases they are not. However, I now have an e800, and I have a Frama case with it, and the corners are covered. I have dropped the e800 in the Frama case, and also sustained no damage.

Let's see, I drop my n10 around 3 times. However, it always recovered. Though, it is scratched badly. Though, I never drop my new x50v YET. I hope it will never happen. :(

Another Mr Fumble Fingers here, I also have lost count of the number of times that I've dropped my Pocket PC's but so far apart from airborne SD cards I have suffered no damage. In my opinion this is because since my Jornda got squished when I dropped it on the stairs and then stepped on in it I have used aluminium cases for every subsequent Pocket PC.
If in doubt buy an aluminium case !

I agree with your assessment of charactor Mr. Fumble Fingers... I have not dropped either of my two pocket pcs ever. I have had a few close calls and very low slips a few times with no damage, but nothing in comparison to your drop it and then cruch it.

I've dropped mine a few times (under 5, but I'm not sure how many).
None from higher than just over waist high, which for me is about 3-4 feet off the ground.
Pretty much every time had a leather Vaja case on it and I've never had any physical problems with it.
None of the drops were onto concrete, but one or two were onto tile and one or two onto hardwood flooring.
Overall there are some glitches I've seen with my device, but no reason to feel it's damaged.

My worst drop was from a seated position years ago. It started falling from my desk and (being known for my lightning fast reflexes) my arm shot out to catch it. Unfortunately, it bounced from my palm and the momentum threw it hard into the side of my desk...owww..
It didn't turn on immediately, but after soft resetting it came back. It would have been much better if I would have simply let it fall.

You need to curb yourself, You know that there are laws requiring you to have a license to bear arms.

Wow, I've dropped my a730 once...and it was pretty bad! I was riding my bike...and going pretty fast too, when it fell out of my coat pocket. It bounced once off the road on the very bottom (which was lucky I guess) and ended up in the grass. I aslo had a 5gb microdrive and 1gb sd card in it at the time. The microdrive came half out and the sd card shot out the top and I had to find it. Very luckily, there was virtually no damage! Everything, including the microdrive still works fine, and I didn't even have the Asus in a case. There are just a couple of tiny dents in the plastic on the bottom of the unit now. I guess I was pretty lucky!

I killed my first PDA, a Palm IIIx, with an "off the table" experience onto a tile floor.
My Casio EM-500 survived a few drops onto thin office carpet in a somewhat padded leather case. Came thought ok in every case...that PDA was a tank.
My X5 has taken several fairly dramatic drops onto hard surfaces and soft surfaces but has come through ok thanks mostly to a RhinoSkin Ti case. The most dramatic was a skittering slide down a half flight of stairs (think industrial steel stairs) that included three really heavy bounces. That one was a hard reset but no hardware damage. Sure that case is heavy but I know my short comings ;) Plus, I love that fact that I can jam it into my back pocket, backpack or overstuffed briefcase without too much fear.
