I hope this is a mistake, but if not we have a problem. The 4700 has been removed from the list of ipaqs to get the WM5 upgrade. The "WM5 coming soon" notice on hp.com stated that hx2xxx and hx4700 series ipaqs would be offered the upgrade. Last night it did not say that anymore. It now states that hx2xx series ipaqs will be offered the upgrade. The 4700 is not mentioned. I purchased my 4700 expecting to be able to upgrade to WM5. I see this as false advertising, or perhaps breach of contract. How many hx 4700s have been purchased since the WM5 upgrade has been anounced and promised for this model. I would think many thousands. HP's canadian site still shows the original message including the 4700, but this site is typically a little behind the US site. Check it out hp.com vs. hp.ca. Then call hp and ask them if they're going to screw us on this.

Wow, this is not good if they pulled it for the 47xx's. That was one of the series that was announced as being upgradeable on the Windows Mobile 5 launch date.
That said, it could be the hx2xxx series will be first with the 47xx's being at a later date. And more than one OEM has been known the "change their minds" when it came to upgrades.
If you call, post the results please. I have a whole list of P/PCs that were to be upgradeable and the 47xx's are on it. 8O
I may need to make a correction.....

Hopefully this is just an error. I recall scads of fuming when various models didn't get upgrades to WM2003SE and upgrades before that. Folks were indignant about breach of contract and trust. Gnashing of teeth and wailing abounded. What was missing was actually commitment by the OEM that they would be providing updates. There was anecdotal evidence that this support person, or that account manager, said they would, but never anything corporate concrete.
I hope you folks made copies of the web press releases, with dates, when HP announced their intentions, because by golly they did. I don't recall them saying they are thinking about it, I recall them listing the devices slated for upgrade. This time, if you bought after that date, expecting to be upgraded, by golly you have a case, as long as you saved the documentation.
A long time ago, when it was discovered that the color density on the Jornada was 12 bit, though advertised as 16 bit, HP offered to buy back any unit, no questions. They weren't forced to do that, they just did it. I would think they would have to follow their own example here, faced with reneging on a published promise, as long as you can produce the promise.
Still, I hope it's just an unfortunate oversight in the printed details.

When I read/hear about things like this, it makes me so glad I've permanent steered clear of HP and went to Dell. :)
No more being screwed by HP.

Here's the original press release, which quite plainly states that the 4700 WILL receive an upgrade.

Here is a link to the "Coming soon" announcement mentioned above:

I have to believe this just a mistake in the release. The public relations fiasco would be very large....not to mention the legal issues involved. As you can see from the first link, they have very clearly stated that they would upgrade the 4700. Their legal department would go apesh!t over something like this.

It occurs to me that if this is true, it may be a symptom of HP's recent performance in the market. It's no secret that they're being savaged, losing 36% of their sales in a single quarter. It might be possible that they've decided the lackluster sales of the hx4700 aren't enough to justify the cost of developing an upgrade. If so, it's exactly the wrong move. They've forgotten what happened to Toshiba after they abandoned their flagship device.

There was a thread discussing this topic a few weeks ago. If I recall correctly, the general consensus to come out of that was that it was an error on HP's part, but you'd think they would have fixed it by now, right?
HP did state in their press release that they would support the device with the upgrade, and other sites such as HP UK, HP Australia and HP Canada are still listing the hx4700 as a supported device. However, if HP did decide to pull the device from the Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade pool, then HP's support will have slumped to its lowest levels since...

At the time, I think this discussion came up because a PR omitted a mention of the hx4700; now, another webpage has been altered. At best, HP is guilty of webpage incompetence. At worst is far worse...

No, the PR had always mentioned the hx4700. Instead, it is the webpage mentioned here (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/en/sm/pocketpc/MS5.0_coming_soon.html) which features the omission. Bottom line - HP has the duty of ensuring their webpages feature accurate and updated information. After weeks of leaving out the hx4700 from that webpage, it still has not been fixed.
Earlier in June, I made a report (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=40520) of this webpage; at the time, both the hx2000 and hx4700 series were listed on that page in black and white. Why the latter has suddenly been omitted is anyone's guess.

It's a disappointing bit of news. More on the front page: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,42472&/hp_ipaq_hx4700_-_windows_mobile_5.0_update_delayed.htm

By mid to late spring of 2006 most people will have moved to another device. Seems to me it is more of a delay tactic... by spring of 2006 they can just say that there are not enough current users to justify deploying the upgrade.
I believe that for most people Wm2003SE works fine.. is there really a need to upgrade to a new OS?

Better use of the HP 4700's memory setup, if nothing else. ;)

Due to unforeseen extended delays in the availability of a critical 3rd party driver, the upgrade kit for the hx4700 will be delayed to mid to late Spring 2006.
Just due to ONE of the 3rd party driver?? 0X

So, is it the trackpad or the ATi video chip?
