<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.davespda.com/index.php?itemid=464' target='_blank'>http://www.davespda.com/index.php?itemid=464</a><br /><br /></div><i>"Motorola has officially announced the Motorola Q (also know as the RAZRberry or the Franklin). The Q is an extremely thin Windows Mobile 5.0 device, measuring in at 0.45 inches think. It features a 320x240 pixel screen (which means it is landscape by default). The Q is based on Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, though you would think with the QWERTY keyboard that is included the device would be running Phone Edition. Pictures, further specs, and the complete press release are below. The Motorola Q includes 1.3 Megapixel camera, miniSD, Bluetooth, a QWERTY thumb/keyboard, keys for one-handed navigation and more. The QWERTY keyboard has the same EL backlighting as the RAZR but the keys are raised for touch typing. The expected release date is Q1 2006."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/motoq01.jpg" /><br /><br />Well, looks like I was wrong - when I <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=41084&highlight=razr">posted about this last month</a> I thought that based on the specs it would be a Pocket PC Phone Edition. It's not - it's a Smartphone! But here's what's curious: in the press release, Motorola doesn't confirm the RAM/ROM configuration, or the CPU type. It certainly looks like a very full-featured Smartphone! Unfortunately it won't be available until Q1 2006 - what's with Motorola and their huge lag time between announcement and when the actually ship the product? This looks like it might be a killer product, but I hope Motorola brings it to market with their first timetable target.

What's just as interesting as the fact that it's Smartphone is the orientation of the screen -- it looks landscape. If so, this may be the first landscape Smartphone.

Hey janak, it mentioned already that its in landscape mode. :)
Actually its small for a ppc phone but it seems big for a smart phone!!

I think we better wait and see if and when Moto will really release this. :D

This is the first Windows Mobile Smartphone I've seen that may actually tempt me away from my Treo 650. I wonder when this device will become widely available, and the specs.
So much is yet unknown about this product. It has "Treo killer" written all over it.

Yeah, if Motorola ever releases it. I anticipate multiple delays, then silence for a while, and finally an announcement that it won't be released after all. By that time it won't matter because its specs will have become unimpressive (if we even know them in detail by then).

qwert keyboard on a smartphone device?! i cant say that this is a smart move! i would choose the portiat mode and standart number pad and decrease the width of the device

In my opinion, the styling's great, though it would benefit from the removal of the somewhat empty space beneath the keypad. My two cents. ;)

I am still standing correct: Never expect Moto to release a decent PPC phone. This one almost get there, but with a DEFAULT landscape and SMARTPHONE edition, this phone doesn't even deserve PPCT frontpage news at all.
BY the way, Today DELL has X50V for $263 only with 2 year warranty and an extra battery.
Dell Home has Axim X50 624MHz PDA for $418 - $120 off coupon JDDBDD1213FWWH - $35 off $300 email coupon = $263, free shipping. $35 coupon is $0.99 from ebay.

I don't know. Data input is the biggest down fall for my SMT5600. If this guy isn't as big as a Phone Edition it could be a decent product.

Even if it means shipping it with a 1-hr battery? :devilboy:
Half an inch thick?
Nice engineering...
Me, I'd rather see a portrait VGA screen and no pad below, numeric *or* qwerty. And PPC Phone edition, of course.

Even if it does actually get produced, and I'm as sceptical as some others here, I wonder how fast the carriers that supported the MPX220 are going to jump on this

Exactly. Remember, this device is less than a half-inch thick. That's pretty darn thin. :P
It does look like the RAZR team designed this, which holds out hope for reliability.

If it has the rumoured Blackberry email functionality, the full QWERTY keyboard is a must have.
Holy cr@p batman!
Check out the pictures on mobile burn of the size of the unit.
They compare it to a blackberry and a V3..
Nice closeup of the unit as well..

It has "Treo killer" written all over it.
I was wondering how long it would take someone to use this description. My guess is, given Moto's recent history, by the time this device is actually released folks will be using their Treo 750.
Release it within the next 3-6 months, and you've got a compelling device. Releasing it in about 18 months and you've got what amounts to yesterdays news.
I will say this though, I've had my RAZR for about 2 months now and it is absolutely the most reliable cell phone I've ever had........and it looks good too! Kind of like marrying Halle Berry for her personality.
I think it would be neat to see a PPC phone Edition device with a square screen and nothing else on the front. So, the device would just be a small ultra-thin square. All the buttons would be on the side.
(personally, I wouldn't buy it. BUT I think it would be a cool device)

I remember serveral months back when the MPX got cancelled that there was rumours that there will be a razr type MPX phone coming out. Is this it? I presume not since it doesnt have the clamshell hinge. Anyone hear anything on a follow up to the MPX?

I returned the RZR 'cause its lack of functionality and constant problems with my corporate e-mail. Switched to the Audiovox SMT 5600 'cause of WM and it just works great.
However, I liked very much the very good design of the RZR over the Audiovox and wished that they could come up with a WM RZR. With the Q I will definitely will switch back to Motorola. I just can't wait. Now I just wish that it'll also have WiFi :) .
Can we also expect it to be GSM Quad band?

Well, I wouldn't use GPS as often as other functions such as wireless, so I'd rather not have the additional bulk or reduction in battery size to fit in the GPS unit. If there were no tradeoffs, yes, integrated GPS would be great. But there are always tradeoffs.
extravagant
07-27-2005, 01:52 AM
100% they are capable of integrating GPS with almost no tradeoffs. Of course you will use wifi more, but GPS will seriously improve the quality of the unit considerably...
They should start integrating GPS, like I said I wont buy another phone till they do. I mean, I already have the pocket pc wifi etc and the smartphone, so why would I buy another device that has all that stuff. Everything works fine now. What I really want is an all in one device, kind of like the mpx 300 style, but smaller and better and with better memory, specs and of course GPS!

This is it. The Razr similarity refers to the thickness, not the hinge.

If it can be accomplished without major trade-offs, great. But as useful as it would be, I don't think it would be useful enough to enough people to be worth compromising the main feature set. If they did something that provided you the use of the Assisted-GPS that is used for E911 services, then that would be good, since it's already got to be built in.

Exactly, plus, what good is the keyboard if theres no wifi? Generally u input information when u have wifi (MSN etc)
Personally, I never make appointments on my smartphone or pocket pc, only on the pc then sync.
Plus this thing doesn't have GPS!!!!!!
Evolution, not revolution. Plus its far to big so I wont consider, at all. HP iPAQ Mobile messenger is better, but that 2 has issues, no wm5.. and the screen is small and I'd rather the design be like the mpx 300 or new htc wizard in order to save space and be more efficient.

Hp Messenger is a much better choice although as u mentioned it doesnt have WM5 and with a stupid square screen... but at least its Phone addition and not Smart Phone, u know!! So both r out of the game for me..
So, for now i can get the Benq P50 or wait 2 months & get the BEAST HTC UNIVERSAL :D

It's for instant email. Think Blackberry.

Instant email is not good for this phone (well here in Canada with the carieer charges)
They charge 3 cents per KB, I went on msn.com ONE TIME and on MSN Messenger a few times and sent only ONE outgoing message and I got charged $15!!!! I dont think u want it to be connected all the time with these kind of rates, u can expect ur phone bill to go hundreds of dollers.
I also called to ask about data packages and they want $25 for 5mb, thats krazy so the keyboard is useless for me unless theres wifi since I wont use GPRS.

Hey extravagant, i'm in Canada, i have UNLIMITED Data plan with FIdo, i pay $50 monthly and access the internet as much as i want... so its never hundreds of Dollars...
Even if u cant get that Plan anymore the other carriers have plans for high data users, u can check it out with them, but dont get fooled and pay that much... u have to have a data plan to save money...

Eh, no. ;)
It's a lot like the Australian dollar. The Yen is just in a league of its own.
extravagant
07-30-2005, 04:05 AM
well, I am aware of the $50 for unlimited access, but I find thats way too much money. $50 + 7 (system) + 5 (caller id) + 25 normal plan + taxes is farrrrrr to much money on a monthly basis.
So I have no choice but not to use it. What other careers do u mean? Rogers is the only other GSM network. And rogers offers the same rates.
ctmagnus
07-30-2005, 04:38 AM
I concur. $87 a month for decent Internet access when you're away from your home/office/a decent hotspot just really blows animals with horns and beards that like to eat garbage.
I'm on Rogers standard plan and I went over my data in 12 hours this month. Good thing I got my SMT5600 the day before the end of the billing month or I really would've been in hot water. However, next month should be interesting as I'll have more than two days to play with it in the billing period. 8O [ka-ching!]
extravagant
07-30-2005, 06:19 AM
yeah, I just think thats 2 much money every month. Besides, when u think about it, is it that important (for that amount).. u can just tell people to call you or just check your email more often?
saru83
07-30-2005, 09:16 AM
Actually it depends on personal needs... and i refered u to the Unlimited data plan coz u mentioned HUNDREDS OF DOLLERS which is nonsence, but didnt tell u to get it
extravagant
07-30-2005, 06:25 PM
No, when I said hundreds of dollars that was not nonsense. What is nonsense is career rates. Think about it, they charge $25 for 5mb. I'm a power user. You can easily get to hundreds of dollars, 5mb is the equivilent to ONE mp3 song or something...
ctmagnus
07-31-2005, 02:47 AM
they charge $25 for 5mb.
This is Rogers? 5MB for $25 = $5/MB. I pay $12 for 2MB or $6/MB. 5MB on this plan would be $12 for 2MB plus $.01/kB after that or $42 for 5MB.
How do you get the $25/5MB plan?
extravagant
07-31-2005, 03:13 AM
well, that plan could have been fido. however if u tell rogers I'm sure they will give u that rate. Since rogers owns fido etc
so as u can see, either way, the costs are krazy, unless u can get unlimited and for that money its jus tnot worth it.
saru83
07-31-2005, 06:19 PM
unless u can get unlimited and for that money its jus tnot worth it.
If u r willing to pay $25 for 5MB, then whats the big deal to pay $50 for UNLIMITED... can u c the UNLIMITED
Will save u a lot of money, huh!!
