It depends on the particular program.

Most built-in apps shipped with the Windows Mobile op. system (Pocket Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, MS Reader etc) aren't able to do so.

However, with some clever add-on apps (with PIE, for example, any PIE plug-ins) and/or alternative third party apps you can achieve this.

That is, it's not a restriction of the op. system core itself but those of the apps that came with it. Therefore, thirdparty apps are not necessarily affected by this problem.
