He was 85. Doohan died of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at his home in Redmond, Washington, this morning, the Associated Press reported, citing his agent Steve Stevens. His wife was with him, AP said. The actor also suffered from Parkinson's disease, diabetes and lung fibrosis and used a wheelchair."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2005/20050720-scotty.jpg" /><br /><br />If I recall correctly, someone looked at the scripts of all of the original Star Trek episodes and no one ever actually said "Beam me up Scotty." I think most of us remember watching him, either when it was on originally or in perpetual reruns during the 80's as the Star Trek movies were big. DeForrest Kelly, who played Dr. McCoy died June 11, 1999. That really only leaves Shatner (Kirk) and Nimoy (Spock) as the major surviving characters. There is some <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001150/bio">interesting trivia on Mr. Doohan here</a>.

It's sad when your generation of beloved TV characters that you grew up to know and enjoy start passing away. It really exposes your own mortality and hopefully builds a better appreciation for life. I know when I'm 85 (God-willing) and I start to hear things like 'Ben Affleck passes away at 91' or 'Jessica Alba at 78,' my kids or grandkids will probably not see it the same way as I will.

Rest in peace, James. You will always be the best starship engineer any sci-fi show will ever have.

I had the great honor of meeting Mr. Doohan at a convention and having a brief chat with him. He was an articulate and gracious man who appreciated his fans and never let his head get too big. I was saddened when I heard that he had developed Alzheimer's a few years back and was saddened again to hear of his passing today.

Rest in peace, James. You will always be the best starship engineer any sci-fi show will ever have.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Yet another great actor and person is "beamed up". The Star Trek world just became a smaller place.

Only major actors left are Shatner and Nimoy? Did you forget about the female major characters on the show? Actors who performed in every episode? Or are you talking about how much they got paid?

I have also heard that Doohan was very gracious in all interactions with fans. That's wonderful.

Other than Lt. Uhura, there weren't any female major characters as far as I remember. Yes, a number of extras and people who made repeat appearances, but hey.. that's not really the topic of the thread.

Rest in Peace Mr. Doohan. You will be remembered by many.

Scotty is one of the reasons why I do what I do today. I'm an electrical engineer at Fermi National Laboratory. I used to watch him design/fix things and I just ate it up.

My kids watch it now and say what a cheesy show, lousy special effects. Then I say, "Son in my day a show did not need great special effects to be a great show". He still doesn't get it...

I'll have a wee bit of ale tonight for the great memories!!!

We all respect Mr. Doohan, not least because of his service in WWII. Thank you, Veteran!!

Although this is a sad occasion, perhaps a little Star Trek-related humor wouldn't be too inappropriate:

I just returned from www.cnn.com. They're having a quick poll on your favorite James Doohan quote. Choices are:
"We're losing the warp engines."
"You can't mix matter and anti-matter cold."
"If we keep up this speed, we'll blow up any minute now."

They missed my favorite quote:
"Ah canna change the laws of physics, Captain!!"

What are your favorite quotes or scenes?

he said over and over that "the engines won't take warp 9!" he got them up there and back again.

What a great memory. What a personal warrior the person, the actor was. Imagine "pneumonia, Alzheimer'sParkinson's disease, diabetes and lung fibrosis." Whew. Fighter to the end. What a lot of great times my wife's family and myself had watching Star Trek reruns when they were first in syndication and instantly bigger than they ever were on the original network runs. If there had been the kind of cable coverage we have today in the days of the original network run, Star Trek would have been 10 times as big and still be running. It just didn't fit network.

And, of course the related:

Scotty picks up the mouse, holds it to his mouth like a microphone and says "Computer. Computer?"

That is one of my all time favorite Scotty moments

I don't remember the exact quote but, when he was making one of his cameo’s in the Next Generation and he told La Forge:

"You can't expect him to think you’re a miracle worker when you tell him exactly how long it will take!"

I love when they poked fun at themselves :D

A sad, sad day indeed. He will be missed more then he could ever have imagined. An inspiration to many, both on and off-stage.

Ultra sad day for all Trekkers out there. He will be missed. He was one of a very few actors that not only was in the original series, was in 7 movies, and had an entire episode of Next Generation in his honor (Spock might of had 2 next gen episodes, but was in only 6 movies... ;) ). Always a favorite character.

Scotty(Intercom) - "Aye, right where I left it"

Thanks for inspiring a generation of engineers.

Kids are spoiled by movies big on fluff, low on substance. The original Star Trek had great stories and the imagination the writers had was way ahead of it's time. The series was ground breaker in so many ways.

Scottie was always one of my favorite characters. James Doohan brought a lot of humanity to the show and there were probably many more guys who could relate to Scotty than anyone else on the show. After all, Shatner was getting busy with anything that was remotely female looking when he wasn't attacking a Romulan or Klingon warship.

He will be missed. 85 is a good run and I can only hope to make it that long. His life looked full and blessed. We all can be only so lucky.

Favorite Scottie quote: "Captain, I'm giving you all she's got!" The 'Miracle Worker' is one of my favorites too!

I was never a fan of Star Trek, but I still respect the fantastic efforts put in by the production team. They were the reason why it became such a huge hit.

Rest in peace, James. You will be missed.

Its funny, I just watched the Star Trek I, II, III, V, and VI over the last few weeks. I am a big star trek fan (have all of TOS, TNG, DS9, VGR and Enterprise S1 on VHS, and all the movies on DVD) and never gotten to it. Did it over the holidays. Scotty was a good character.

My wife read elsewhere that Doohan was a radio character actor and came to the audition for Star Trek with 8 different voices/personalities. When he did them, they all decided the Scottish one was the way to go. How many actors worked that hard on a part they were just auditioning for?
What a guy.

When Star Trek first came on the air we didn't have a TV. But I was able to listen to the show on the radio by tuning to the extreme end of the FM band to pick up the local TV station. After I was married and we owned a TV we used to watch the show faithfully on syndication.

The actor, who died Wednesday at age 85, had told relatives he wanted his ashes blasted into outer space, as was done for "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry.

As the man who commanded the Enterprise's particle beam transporter, Doohan's character also inspired the phrase, "Beam me up, Scotty." Capt. Kirk and other members of the Enterprise crew never really issued the order quite that way, however, until the fourth "Star Trek" film when Kirk said, "Scotty, beam me up."

my favorite quote is actually from jim carrey imitating scotty in "cable guy" (i think)
"can't do it captain. i dooont hav de poowrrr"
:)

my collague just told me that on the news they mentioned him getting "buried" in space?

can anyone confirm this? that'd be fitting for someone who helped us grow up with the idea that we're not alone in this universe!

can't say i watched TOS a lot ... i was more of a TNG freak. but TOS was before my time, and TNG had a lot more action for a kid like me.
i'm amazed that there were only 79 episodes of TOS made ... i had the impression that there must have been hundereds !

My favorites lines from Scotty are from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan where Kirk asks Mr. Scott if he can have the engines repaired in time for them to get off the Genesis asteroid:
Scotty: "Captain it will take 8 hrs but I'll get it done for you in 2"
Kirk: "Mr. Scott have you always multiplied your repair estimates by a factor of 4"
Scott: "Aye sir, how else do you think they call me the miracle worker"

Of course most of us love the line, "Cap'n if I push her any further she'll blow apart" in one variation of another...Geordi of course following in the shoes of Scotty the great had his line "Coolant leak, coolant leak...bridge this is Leforge...Captain we are looking at a warp core breach". However. no one rivals Scotty. Although he has now gone where others have gone before, he will always be remembered by me as having been unqiue and inspiring. Rest in peace Scotty.

I met him at a convention also, and echo that he was a really nice guy. I remember during his talk he was asked about working with William Shatner. He said "I don't know about Bill Shatner but I get along with Jim Kirk just fine".

He will be missed.

He speaks for a bit in the "Trekkies" movie. He helped a woman from killing herself, and speaks about it.
