Hi.
I'm trying to troubleshoot my wife's iPAQ 5500 - it is unable to
connect to our new home wireless network.
My LOOX connects fine, so the network's OK.
The problem is that the 5500, while detecting the network in
Connections > Connections > Advanced > Network Card, doesn't pop up
the "detected new network" dialog.
I've backed it up and done a hard reset, and the popup appears, and
allows me to connect correctly. Restoring the backup, however, reverts
to the original problem.
I'm very reluctant to rebuild the machine from scratch; does anyone
know what registry settings govern the automatic detection of wireless
networks, so that I can delete the incorrect settings and get the
machine to recognise the network?
Installed Pocket Boingo, which also doesn't list the network for
selection. I believe this to be a registry problem.
TIA,

Why not just leave it as is? Why do you NEED to restore the backup?

Well, most importantly, there's a load of GPS software with activation information in the backup data, and since we've just moved house we can't easily access the installation disc for reactivation.
There are also a good fifty pieces of software installed on the machine, and ploughing through emails to locate the registration details would be a significant chore. We'll do it if we absolutely have to, but it would be much easier to address the problem another way.

Well, first off, I'm not really sure how to fix your problem, but I do have a suggestion: you should keep a copy of all your registration codes somewhere. For example, I have a text file containing all my registration code for my PPC in one place, and I also have a note stored on my PPC (and synced to my desktop) that has all my codes in it. This way, you'll have easy access to all of them in case you ever need them again (and I would suggest this even if you weren't having problems).
I'm sorry I wasn't able to assist you, but good luck.

Indeed. That's precisely what I do with my own codes, using CodeWallet Pro, which I heartily recommend for such matters, since it both synchronises without interference and allows me to search for specific details.
This is the first problem my wife has encountered with her iPAQ, however, and the necessity of such steps have not previously been brought home in this way.
Thanks for the advice. Can anyone else help with the issue of the non-functioning wireless pop-up?

What I'd suggest is get a before/after comparison of the registry. Since you seem comfortable with the idea of modifying the registry already, if the app you are using supports exporting the registry, do that after a hard reset and after restoring the backup. Resco Explorer and Tascal Regedit both support this, and the latter is free. Copy both *.reg files over to your PC and use a text comparing application like this:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/csdiff.html
(I'm not necessarily recommending this app, it's just the only freeware I can find at the moment).
Given the number of programs you've installed, it might take a while to get what you want, but it's a start. You could save a little bit of time by disregarding entries under HKCR, or by doing a partial export of HKCU and HKLM strings only (TRE supports this, but I'm not sure about Resco).
