I'm looking to make the jump from my CF2031 card (CDMA...Slow) to a service with EV-DO. Here in Indianapolis EV-DO is now available with Sprint and Verizon Wireless. My service with Sprint has pretty much been flawless, just really slow. I'm considering getting a PCMCIA card, $80/month , for my TabletPC, and a VX8100 phone with Bluetooth for connecting my PDA. I've already checked and DUN works with VZW and the VX8100.

My wife has a Mio unit so I was considering getting her a VX8100 also and a Bluetooth SDIO card for connecting to the Internet.

Does anyone have any experience with these services and can comment? I'm really not sure if these 3 scenarios are valid and/or if the PCMCIA card is worth $80 month.

I keep my TabletPC connected all day because the company I work for locks out most ports like ICQ, IMAP/SSL, and POP . Plus, I'm not allowed to have personal equipment on the companies network anyways.

I saw a LG VX8100 over the weekend, and I was impressed. The camcorder and the dual speakers seem really cool. Plus, my next phone has to have BT.

Yeah, I noticed the VX8000 when it was out but it didn't have bluetooth so it wasn't as useful to me. Now the VX8100 has it and it should support DUN on the PPCs.

I am really interested to play around with the VX8100 and see how it works. The BT is a big draw for me, and the video capbilities are intiguing as well. Good luck with your purchase.

I have the PCS Connection Card for use with my laptop when I travel. It is very fast when surfing the web and there are no problems with e-mail in Outlook. I had it for a 3 mo. trial period at $40/mo. But I didn't use it at all when home so it wasn't worth $80/mo when the trial period was up.

However, I am getting the PPC-6600 tomorrow so shouldn't need the card anymore.

DUN is definitely supported on the VX8100 and is supposed to be really great with EVDO.

No problem. I hope that helps. You think you'll end up getting the VX8100?

I'm definitely getting the 8100 with VZW. I'm just waiting to see if a better offer comes out then $150 after rebate.

Glad I could help. I'll be excited to hear what you think when you get it? Are you gonna wait to find a better deal?

Definitely report back when you get it. :) I want to get EVDO for my Pocket PC and laptop somehow, and a new phone might be a good choice. I'm also curious what data plan one has to sign up for...

Well, Amazon has the phone for free after rebate 8) The problem is that if you read the fine text in the rebate you have to wait about 18 weeks to get $150 back from them. This is a pretty big outlay when you're wanting to get 2 phones, like myself.

18 weeks is a while, but at least you get the money back sometime. IMO, it's better to have all the money back then part of it, or none at all. Definitely report back though and let us know what you think about the phone.

While GPRS seems to average at around 42kbps, 1x at 100kbps, EDGE at 160kbps and WCDMA (UMTS, 3GSM) averages around 260-300kbps, you will see EV-DO doing between 500 - 600kbps depending on network load, cell location.

Here in New Zealand I get speeds of up to 1Mbps on a good day, when downloading a large file (multiple elements, like on a web page, tend to be slower than a single connection).

It sounds like you really like the EVDO. How long have you been using it? I'm still trying to decide whether or not to get the VX8100 with it on there.

I have it on a Harrier Pocket PC (same as Audiovox XV6600) since a month before their official launch here - November 2004.

Wow, cool. You've been using it for awhile then. You think it would be really easy/good to use on this phone I'm looking at?

I just got the VX8100 and went ahead and had the latest software flash updated as well. My question is about the Bluetooth.

Will the Bluespoon Ax work with this phone?

Thanks in advance.

How do you like the phone so far? My contract is about to expire and I'm trying to get as much feedback as possible.
