I wonder if anyone would be able to answer a question regarding the today plug-in.
If I have the same battery monitor on each tab, does this increase memory and/or processor load, or does it still count as one item?

I'm seeing so many of these Windows Mobile 5.0 screenshots from lots of developers, I just can't wait for my E-TEN M500 to get it! Other than the HTC Himalaya devices would received a hacked version of Windows Mobile 5.0, is there any other devices out on the market that have 5.0 installed? If not, what's the hold up?
Many users have complained over the previous versions of Spb Pocket Plus with memory leaks and heavy resource consumption. I am in dire need of a task manager, and am afraid to go through the hassle of liking an application such as this, only to fail on me or piss me off in the long run.
Thanks to the post reply on the TenGo Thumb announcement, I am able to dwiddle down my number of active plug-ins on the Today page in order to have the third-party SIPs (keyboards) function without problems.
Anyone else give this program and thorough runthrough and see if it has memory issues as its previous releases?

Just downloading the upgrade myself - no question about it, this has been one of the most useful products on my pocket pc.
One very small criticism is there is only a small selection of icons that can be used for shortcuts on the today screen in version 2.x - I hope they have changed this in version 3. either by adding more or allowing you to add your own.

I've encountered no system slow-downs in 3.0. Spb invested a huge amount of effort in cleaning up the conflicts and optimizing the speed in 3.0. I had major issues with 2.5, but 3.0 fixed all those plus operates considerably faster--even out of BIS on my X50v. I helped beta test this version, and it works great all the way around.

Great app! At last, the < title > bug has been fixed in the PIE plug-in. I like the built-in SafeMode booter too. Also, it can also install all the non-necessary stuff outside the RAM (except for TSK files). And, its DLL's are - except for PlusTodayPluginMFC.dll still hackable into a System Path; even one of its EXE files (SafeMode). That way, you can save at least 500 kbytes; only the 444k-long PlusTodayPluginMFC.dll needs to stay in the main memory.
Please note that the Today plug-in part (not the additional services!) may not run if you install it on an SD card. However, off the File Store, it runs great.

Wow!
I tell you the PPC utility space is getting violent. SPB, SBSH, Lakeridge, Vito etc are really going after each other.
On one hand competition is great, but on the other hand you never know which great piece of software to label as redundant.

Does it mean that Pocket Plus will also be partially installed into RAM once I update my hx4700 to Windows Mobile 5? Or will it comply with Persistent Storage architecture and entirely go into ROM?

I'm sure it will go into ROM, since RAM will no longer be able to store files (without a ramdisk application). The whole \Windows directory will be moved to ROM with Windows Mobile 5.

I've done it just for testing, seems to work fine. It moves the startup items to a \Windows\StartUp_DisabledForSafeMode directory, boots, and then moves them back for a normal boot. Pretty slick.

I've noticed a problem it i tap to fast or sometimes too light on the today plugin it registers as a tap and hold. Say i poke one of the tabs very fast (fast as in taping and raising the stylus very fast) i will actually see the tap and hold circle draw in and then the menu pop up. All while not touching the screen. This happens anywhere in the today plugin. It has happened several times then i tap the power button to turn the device off. This didn't happen with 2.5. Not a big deal but kinda strange. :)
Edit: Ok, it kept getting worse so I rebooted. All gone, for now. Wonder what it was?

It seems it doesn't inhibit other non-system (read: 3rd party) services registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init partly because it registers itself before shell32.exe; that is, not after the last system service; therefore, it can't disable the services starting after itself (because there're quite some system services after it starting). This isn't particularly the best idea. Will keep you posted.

Well, mCube's SafeMode doesn't help in this respect either - it, as with Spb Pocket Plus (SPP) 3.0, doesn't touch 3rd-party (non-Microsoft) services in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init; only in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services. (It doesn’t even list the services started in the former; only in the latter.)
This is why neither of the two programs are unable to inhibit XCPUScalar's being run as a service.
This is certainly a big problem with both applications - not only XCPUScalar registers itself in (and starts from) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init but also tools like Mad Programmer's Force Hi-resolution tool V1.51 (http://www.firstloox.org//forums/showthread.php?t=3754) and several other tools. Should they crash – you aren’t able to boot (not even with mCube's SafeMode/SPP).
Of course, it’s understandable why the authors of these two programs (if they are aware of the fact that many 3rd party programs register themselves in here) have chosen not to touch this part of the registry. After all,
1, all system processes (shell32.exe etc) are loaded from here. Letting the user remove them from here would be deadly for the PDA. However, building a don’t display-list of the services listed below is about 30 seconds in any decent programming language.
2, there’re device-specific, additional services here too (for example, ShowBmp.exe, FPN.exe and hpshell.exe with iPAQ 2210’s; KeyLockRes.exe, FSC_PwdCheck.exe, FSC_PwdStart.exe, testreg.exe and Adjustmem.exe with PL720’s). These services implement functionalities not present in WM itself: for example, key locking (KeyLockRes.exe) (this will be part of WM5 though) or displaying a HP ad after booting in (ShowBmp.exe). They can all be disabled in most PDA’s, which even shortens the booting process.
The only services that must be run are as follows (in this order):
shell.exe
device.exe
gwes.exe
updatexip.exe
shell32.exe
services.exe
connmgr.exe
srvtrust.exe
I’ve tested this with two PPC’s (the iPAQ 2210 and the PL720). They work, connect etc. great after removing all the other services.
Bottom line: the lack of cleaning up HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init is certainly an oversight in both SPP 3.0 and mCube's SafeMode, which can be very easily fixed – just (temporarily) remove the EXE’s run from here that are not in the above list. (There may be exceptions though, of which I’m not aware. There may be PDA’s that absolutely require other services to be started here too. I could only check this with two PDA’s.)

Ok, here is a little bug. When you have the close button menu mapped to a key it does not update when you open it. If you tap and hold to open the menu all is fine.
In this experiment i opened internet explorer, did a tap and hold on the close button to see it in the menu. I then closed internet explorer and then opened messaging. I then opened the menu with the assigned hardware button. This is what i get. Everytime.
http://batcaveweb.com/images/plusbug1.jpg
If i open the close button menu with the mapped hardware button it does not refresh. it is always the same app list as the last time i opened it. This means i have to tap the hardware button three times to get an up to date list of apps to close. :(

in my case, whenever i use the "suspend" button (set as a LARGE ICON in the Today screen) to suspend the handheld, and when i turn the device again (through the center switch) - i always find the "suspend" button highlighted...
never experienced this with 2.5 - is this a bug in 3.0?

Nope this is not a bug. 3.0 is designed where you can navigate the today plugin with the d-pad. This it just the highlight on the last active button. If you move the d-pad around you can move between the tabs and around the icons and meters.
The highlight is VERY annoying. I know it is needed for keyboard navigation but it should remove itself after 5 seconds. It is very hard to read some of the custom meters if the meter is highlighted. Also when i change tabs the blue highlight stays. I don't like it. i always hit the up arrow to move the focus above plus. next time i tap anything it's back though. :)
Edit: Just noticed if the today page looses focus the highlight goes away. open the programs window or run an app. but still....
Edit2: Oh and if you tap a tab. then tap inside another today plugin the highlight stays but when you try to d-pad nav the visible highlight is not where the cursor is. you start moving from what ever today plugin you were just in as it should be. So the highlight is not removed when the plus today plugin looses focus. only when the entire today page looses focus.

When I got version 2.5, I contacted SPB about getting this working for my HP -- they asked me to run a utility that gathered certain info, then told me they would enable the screen brightness icons on the next version.
I just upgraded to 3.0, and the screen brightness icons are still not working on my HP rx3115 -- unless I don't have it set up right.
Any other 3115 or 3715 users out there who have gotten this to work? If not please contact SPB and make the request :-)

I just upgraded to 3.0, and the screen brightness icons are still not working on my HP rx3115 -- unless I don't have it set up right.
Any other 3115 or 3715 users out there who have gotten this to work? If not please contact SPB and make the request :-)
The screen brightness tool only works on battery power. It will not work if you are charging your device via cable or cradle. Don't know if that's your issue or not, but it bit me during testing.

and another thing... :( I'm sure this was intentional but it makes things not work as i think they should. I assigned the close menu to a hardware button so that i could have touchless access to closeing, minimizing, swaping apps, reboot, shutdown, and rotate.. you know all that jazz. Well if you bring up the menu and scroll down to a task that you want to switch to (and that you can switch to if you tap on it) and click the action button it closes the app. It does not switch to it... 8O I have a feeling that this is because of the new red [x] beside every running app. Which i love by the way but what good is it mapped to a button if i cannot switch tasks with out tapping the screen? I know i can assign a button to the new alt-tab switcher but i don't have that many buttons...
Edit: What the....? now it works.... I didn't even reboot. Version 3.0 seems a little unstable to me. Lots of little randome issues that just go away... *sigh*

I was hoping the backlight adjustment would be updated to tell when you are plugged into external power and adjust appropriately. It appears it still only works for the battery power.

Still doesn't work on my rx3115 under battery power...

just to note - since PocketPlus now has navigational ability (through the D-Pad), i find that it CONFLICTS with PocketBreeze... well, at least you can disable it in PB (which I dont want) - id rather have it turned OFF in PP
okay, there is also the case that after having installed PP - i sometimes find the PB's navigational functionality locks-up...
*sigh*

i surmising that Spb would release a QUICK UPDATE (version 3.1) really soon...

i think it may be the other way around. i'm not sure how PB handles the dpad scrolling but i have problems with it when i use fake cursor (dpad mouse). PB seems to move whenever the dpad is pressed if it has focus or not. this is bad. when i run fake cursor and move the mouse around PB is scrolling and tab switching like crazy even those it does not have focus. both plus and diary work correctly in this respect. you can only move them with the dpad if you tap on them or scroll down the today page to them. i had to disable dpad nav in PB because had to have fake cursor and didn't want to have to sort out PB everytime i used it. :(
not that PB interferes exactly it just acts on dpad activity no matter what when the today screen is up.

I've played and I've fiddled and I've tinkered and I cannot get Pocket Plus to switch tabs or scroll between icons. :confused totally:
I have Spb Diary and Pocket Plus as the only two plugins on my Today screen. I tried disabling Diary and Pocket Plus didn't respond to the dpad then either.

Hmm.. never had that problem... yet. lol
If i scroll up or down enough i will eventially hit the plus today plugin.
I have plus at the top and diary bellow that. If i tap on diary then press up i get into the plus plugin..
But not like i've had it change the way it's working even without a reboot. ;)

I was just reading the other thread and figured out what the blue squares/rectangles that recently started showing up (in the last two hours) when I tap on something in Pocket Plus are. :p

Yeah, they basically help you with D-pad navigation. In my tests, I've not had a problem navigating between and within Pocket Plus and Diary. I'm hoping you should be in the same boat now as well. :)

They go away as soon as I release the stylus, so no, not much help for me with regards to navigating with the dpad. :(

Unfortunately SPB doesn't have support forums. It seems that some people are experiencing memory leaks. Does anyone know if SPB is working on a fix?
I would also like to be able to turn off D-Pad navigation. Its very annoying.
I like the task switching and safe mode though.

I've upgraded and, so far, I like it. I do have a weird glitch with the indicators, though: I have the Spb Blue extended theme with the indicators locked to the Spb Green (Classic) Extended theme. Everything is fine when my Xda2s is on battery power, but whenever I connect it to external power the battery indicator icon reverts to the one associated with the Blue theme. If I unplug the PPC, the icon switches right back to what it should be. Maybe this is a 'feature' ?!
Otherwise, no problems navigating, no instability, no obvious memory leakage, no noticeable conflicts. Oh, and I installed it to the BIS (without removing v2.5 first - in too much of a hurry  ).

I had this problem. If you will look in the \program files\pocketplus\todayskins\ dir and look at the graphics in there. When you tell plus to always use the icons from one theme and not the default it copies all the icons to a folder in that folder. If you look at the battery charging .gif it will not match the other icons. I think this is because not all icon sets have an icon for all the battery states, normal, charging/AC, and crit low, so it just uses the icon from the last theme selected. If i tell it to always use the icons from a theme that i know has an icon for charging battery status it works just fine.
The reason this happens with the green (classic) icons is because they do not have an icon for battery charging state, or the theme was just created without that icon.
hehe.

Dumb question, does one have to download and install the same language version of this on their PDA? Reason I ask is that on my Axim x50v I try to install the German version on my English PDA within the Built-In Storage area and it just locks which requires a soft reset.. I then notice that a CAB file for the application is put within the Built-In Storage area, which I just delete... Oh well, just curious...

That would explain it, wouldn't it?! I'm just a bit bemused because this didn't happen with the same set-up under v2.5
Anyway, now I know, it's easily solved. Thank you.

That's odd. I don't have that problem. I tried both 'view source' and 'save as' last night on a (admittedly graphic light) BBC news web page and both worked fine.

gaah! this program is getting frustrating. view source didn't work for 2 days straight, reboot or not. i didn't work just now. i was looking at my file assiociations in the registry, just looking, i didn't change anything. now it works... everytime i find a bug it just goes away... 8O

Is anyone else experiencing a slow memory leak with this version? After a soft reset I have about 13mb of available program ram.
At this moment I'm sitting at about 2.8 mb. With no programs running. I just know that if I get a phone call my device will probably do a soft reset.
Darius chimed a few days ago (in another thread) and said he's seen it.
Anybody else have this?

I've not really noticed it. What tabs do you have? anything other than program shortcuts and meters? ie diary or something else.
How long does this leak take, to get from 13 to 2.8?
I tend to reboot often so i may just not notice it. Some times i go for a few days with out a reboot but i'm not sure i have since 3.0.
I haven't noticed any memory usage out of the ordinary for my device.

On which Pocket PC have you been having memory leaks? It works fine on my h1940, but on my X50v, memory is slowly being bitten away. This may just be a problem affecting VGA Pocket PCs. I'm not sure yet.

I'm running it on an E-Ten m500.
I have standard tabs and SPB Finance.
The leak takes perhaps a little less than a day to get dangerously low. I think I noticed it because I only have about 17mb free anyway.

I have the leak as well. I run the plugin with all additional tabs, plus three custom tabs, on an iPaq 5550. (So that means no WPM10 tab.)

There is a link to a form which allows you to submit technical questions, bug reports etc. from this page (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/support.html?en)

Thanks. I went to those pages but it appeared to me like a FAQ so I didn't go to much further.
I just submitted a report for the memory leak. Hopefully other have as well. Perhaps a fix is already in the works.
There was no where to put in an email so I won't get a reply. I guess I could have put it right in the text field.

After i reboot i have 43mb of free ram. After a day or so use i get down to around 31mb. This is normal usage after all my icons get loaded and i run most of my programs once. So I would think a 12mb drop with WM2003SE is normal. For me and all my apps anyway. I haven't noticed any more meory usage than before i had 3.0 installed. But i'll try to keep a close eye on it. :)

I find it amazing how fast a Pocket PC can be when all third-party Today plugins are disabled. I do that every once in a while just to get the speed boost, but I always eventually go back to the third-party plugins due to their utility.
