View Full Version : Free eBook Each Day of July From eReader.com

<a href="http://www.ereader.com/">http://www.ereader.com/</a><br /><br />I just got my newsletter from eReader this morning and noticed that during July, they will be giving away a different free ebook each day. I suspect like most of their free promotions they are books out of copyright, like something by Dickens. However, they tend to throw in two or three recent releases during the month. You will likely need to open an account with them, which includes giving them a valid credit card number. You won't be charged for the free ebooks, but they will use the credit card number to create a one way hash that will lock the ebook for your use only. If you want to be kept up to date on the books, subscribe to this thread. I will try to post the daily release if someone else doesn't beat me to it. :way to go:<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2005/20050630-ereader.gif" />

So far I only have one eBook. "Getting Things Done" by David Allen.
I still haven't finished it.

This may be the perfect oppurtunity to expand my library.

I have about 150 - 200 MSReader books ... will be interesting to see if any eReader books that interest me appear for free this month.

I've bought a number of eReader books, along with eReader Pro (their eBook reader), and have a number of their free eBooks. Can't wait to see what they throw up in July for free download!

Heh... I sprang for eReader Pro a few days ago.

I just hope they don't offer Getting Things Done as a free title. as I bought it at the same time.

I just have to start reading it now. That, and the stack of magazines that have been piling up over the last three months.

I suspect like most of their free promotions they are books out of copyright, like something by Dickens.

I don't know if that will be the case. What's the point of giving away free books that are already free to begin with, as is the case with out-of-copyright books? Not much of a promotion ;)

I think they will be commercial, but lesser known titles, with a few "top ten's" thrown in to make it look good.

But I like eReader. Very simple. Just install the app and enter your credit card number when opening up a new book for the first time on that device. No device activation or any crap like that.

I'm not sure why, but lately I've noticed that Romance novels have begun to outnumber Sci-Fi books on ereader. I don't read either myself (I'm female, but my preference is mysteries -- not the thriller type), but since the males definitely outnumber the females at this and probably every other techie site, I'm wondering what devices these romance novels are mostly read on, and how are they being marketed.

I think its simple numbers. From what I've heard in some of my writing workshops, Romance is nearly, if not over, 50% of the market. Atleast for paper bound.

I went to the page, and just looking at the cover of that book I'll have to spend all day at Home Depot, with a few stops at classic car lots to purge my brain. Maybe if I print it out and take it to my friend's house, he'll let me drive his Corvette around for a while.

Maybe I should go test drive a really big truck.

Devil's Bride
by Stephanie Laurens
July 2

"When Devil, the most infamous member of the Cynster family, is caught in a compromising position with plucky governess Honoria Wetherby, he astonishes the entire ton by offering his hand in marriage. No one dreamed this scandalous rake would ever take a bride. And as society mamas swooned at the loss of England's most eligible bachelor, Devil's infamous Cynster cousins began to place wagers on the wedding date. But Honoria wasn't about to bend society's demands and marry a man just because they'd been found together virtually unchaperoned. No, she craved adventure, and while solving the murder of a young Cynster cousin fit he ill for a while, she decided that once the crime was solved she'd go off to see the world. But the scalding heat of her unsated desire for Devil soon had Honoria craving a very different sort of excitement. Could her passion for Devil cause her to embrace the enchanting peril of a lifelong adventure of the heart?"

I am totally appreciative of ereader's generosity. They are giving us a free book everyday and the books are not the standard olde fare that are now in public domain. Yesterday's selection was tolerable, but I even object to today's selction. Do people still read this stuff? Honestly!?!
Please bring on the Mystery/Thriller, Sci-fi /fantasy novels.

The - Lady Farthington swooned in Rex's arms as he held her tight - kind of novels are very disturbing, and not in a good way. 8O

As a lady asked earlier, do many women use electronic readers??
And these two are just not to most men's taste -
So who is left as an audience for these???
Just how many downloads have there been for these two offerings??
I ask these questions hoping the folks at eReader don't get discourged if there is a low number of downloads so far.
Just offer a good Star Trek book (as they did last year) and I think they will see the number of downloads increase dramatically.

July 3rd free ebook is Carrier 14: Typhoon Season

When an American yacht is attacked in international waters by a Chinese combat helicopter, tensions flare. China staunchly denies they had anything to do with the incident, and Carrier Battle Group Fourteen is put on full alert for what may become a full-blown shooting war between the superpowers... and that is when the real enemy strikes!

I gave my wife my 3950 to read ebooks on and she really likes it because now she never looses her spot. Her favorites are the Stephen King and Dean Koontz style books. And the reason I gave her my 3950 is because something happen to it where I can not load more that about two programs on it before it hard resets, so it is perfect for her. Anyway, it is my excuse to buy an new one. The hard part is trying to deceid if I want to wait for the new models in the fall or buy a X50v or 4700.

I suspect that this promo probably has multiple purposes. Yes to get people interested in eReader, but also to get a feel for who is actually already out there.

If in-print numbers transfer one-to-one into the ebook world, we non-romance readers may find the future a little more frustrating.

I like the eReader format, and I wouldn't mind selling some of my novels as eReader books. However, eReader's licensing deal demands that if you use eBook Studio and sell your own novels, you pay them 15% royalties of every eBook sold. Whether you are selling through their site or not.

If I printed books for sale, I wouldn't pay royalties to the guy who sold me the printing press. If I used their site to sell my books, I'd expect to pay for the use of their infrastructure, and 15% sounds more or less reasonable. But if they've got my money for their software, and I'm doing the rest on my own, the transaction should end there.

Am I wrong?

Ed Hansberry
07-20-2005, 04:31 AM
I agree. That sounds sort of dumb. I had no idea that was the case. You could use TextPad or other text editor to create the markup then use DropBook to compile it. http://www.ereader.com/dropbook

Steve Jordan
07-20-2005, 11:52 AM
Lit format, Palm markup format, eReader format... too many formats. The more I think about disseminating electronic books, the more I come back to Acrobat format: Use whatever text product you want, spit it out as PDF... done. Tagged PDFs can rewrap on handhelds. PDFs have built-in security for docs, specified by the creator. Disseminating PDFs is FREE. (Daig, I sound like an Adobe shil.)

Steele: Book One
by J. D. Masters

Lt. Donovan Steele was a good cop until he was killed. Then, he got even better. Advanced technology resurrected him in a robot body -- computer-brained, atom-powered, and supremely strong. Now, this one-man SWAT team brings his own brand of justice to the savage world of tomorrow.

Manhattan is under attack. Godfathers and warlords amass hoodlum armies to take over the city. Killers run wild while the police and the public hide behind locked doors.

Suddenly, a new champion enters the war: a law enforcement machine that walks like a man. A robot commando armed with the firepower of a high-tech army. An armored juggernaut on a collision course with crime...

I didn't know PPCs could handle any Adobe files with DRM (either ebook or PDF format)? I did see something about the latest version being able to handle ebooks, but it seemed nobody could actually get it to work.

Anyway, the PPC reading experience is much more pleasant with ereader, Mobipocket, or MSReader.

Steve Jordan
07-21-2005, 02:39 AM
I regularly read tagged PDFs on a Toshiba e330 running WinPPC 3.0. The tagged files allow you to size the fonts any way you'd like. The only problem I've ever had is an occasional scrolling problem (sometimes the scroll will bounce back to the top of a page, instead of on to the next one). But considering the ease of creating and reading them, the scroll issue is no big (although if Adobe would kindly fix it in their next PPC reader, I'd appreciate it).

Why would it be inappropriate? I'm not going to engage in politics and life issues here, but bottom line, after all that has happened in London, the most appropriate thing to do would be to stand up and go about one's daily life. No matter what happens, nothing will disrupt Londoners and its tourists.

I agree Ed, ereader has really come through with the goods this time around.

I didn't keep close enough track of the daily books to catch a single one I wanted (and only saw a few I was interested in besides)... I was waaay too busy this month, though.

I also still have issues with eReader and the other e-book formats(price, compatibility, DRM, royalties, etc, etc), so I can't get myself whipped into the desire to get more of their books right now.
