It's all well and good that the aging BenQ P50 now has FCC approval, but when will it hit American soil? How much of an impact will it have on the market when oodles of better Pocket PC Phone Edition devices already exist in the market? I'll leave it to you to decide. ;-)

Just because it gets FCC approval doesn't mean it's going to be sold in the US. The Toshiba e830 is a good example of that. Anyway, like you said, a day late and a dollar short.

at least the guys from Motorola MPX won't be the only ones marching in the shame parade of devices that could but never did.

True, but with fcc approval some of us geeks get to look exotic with sexy imports. :D
The above statement is not meant to indicate the "sexy-ness" or the lack thereof of the Benq p50

This handheld looks absolutely aweful!!! It is definately too late. I would get one of the new HP Mobile Messengers over this any day.

What PPC Phones are that much better? I don't think any are better personally - this phone w/ a WM 05 upgrade would be perfect in my opinion.

The HTC Magician!
Also known as:
- XDA II Mini
- Imate JAM
- Qtek s100
- Krome Spy
- Orange SPV M500

HTC Magician vs. BenQ is apples and oranges, man.
I agree with jpjehu, there isn't really many comparable phones out there yet. I see the BenQ being more comparable to one of those HTC phones with the slide out keyboard (my brain is tired and I can't think of the name). It really reminds me of my Ipaq 3835 with phone capabilities.
The new Mobile Messengers will likely be cheaper, but I don't care for the small screen res, and the BenQ will have WiFi (I think I heard it will, but I could be wrong).
I for one want the HTC Universal. The best form factor for typing, IMO, coming from a Clie UX50.

Well, if you wanted to do an apples/apples comparison, you could put it together with the hw6515. While both have their ups and downs, the form factors of both devices are mildly similar. Either way - I think both devices are "old" stuff, and I'm just waiting for HTC to burst its bubble with a plethora of new devices.

Also waiting on other WM5.0 Phone Ed Devices. Although the Built-in WiFi and Thumboard on the BenQ P50 has some appeal, I dunno if I could trade it for the Magician's size and look.

the 6515 won't compare. HP's effort to conserve power has produced (yet again) another poorly performing PPC Phone. Plus - the dimensions show a continual lack of creativity (now it's the jornada-phone). I also think the square screen limits an already too-poor screen res. The PPC Phones with a slide out keyboard (IMO) are two-handed devices (especially the new MDA IV or V clamshell) and therefore are not comparable or even appropriately-designed for the convergent user who's truly 'on the go'.

...and therefore the Benq P50 (with a needed later upgrade to WM 05) is the only device of it's kind - or might I say the only 'finished-thought' unlike the 'in-between' concept PPC Phones now.

Here here!

Absolutely. They need to put at least a 320x320 screen in, to keep it in competition with the Treo in that respect, and to let it run standard 240x320 apps (with bars on the side, but still normally).

The integrated keyboard that I had in my h4355 (just before my Mini) is the thing I really miss from it. I can do with an SD Wifi in exchange for builtin phone, but the keyboard was nice. The Samsung i730 looks nice, but not sure of its size.

It is pretty similar to my PDA2k, although the PDA2k is a little more advanced, and about to be replaced...

If it was offered for the right price and unlocked, I would consider buying it. It looks to have most of the features I would like.
