I'm sorry if the answer is obvious to the more technoliterate among you, but I can't see from the website (http://www.sto-helit.de/index.html) whether Mortplayer will stream RealAudio formats.

I'm a bit of a BBC Radio 4 nut and I'd like a player which can stream their stuff, which is all in Real streaming formats. If Mortplayer can't do this is there any other player which can? Apart from Real's own version, I mean: I can't stand how often Real products need to 'phone home and how much junk they deliver  .

In defense of RealOne for the PPC, I don't think it "phones home" and you don't get anything other than the player when installed on the PPC. It's fairly straightforward.

In defense of you, I dislike RealOne's policies as much as just about every other living creature on this earth. I don't see why anyone would want to stream their media with Real's format.

I've been sort of looking for the same thing... any other player other than RealOne that can handle RealMedia files and I haven't found anything.

I'll be on the lookout for such a program and will post again if I find anything.

Thanks. Armed with that I'll grit my teeth and download RP for PPC.

You'll probably want the v1.1 release as opposed to the standard v1.0 release. It's miles ahead in functionality.

I downloaded v1.1 and...

It doesn't play any .mp3 files

I can't stream anything using it. Not even anything from the Real.com site
Am I missing something or is this just one big waste of time?

The Pocket PC version has never been able to, which I do admit, blows, but isn't a huge dilemma when so many other decent MP3 players exist.

That's odd. Do you know the file extension of the stream? IIRC, RealOne has always been able to handle basic Real streams.

Even if I follow Real's instructions to the letter and try to stream (the very poor selection of) stuff from their own RealOne mobile website (i.e. start the RealOne player, tap on the Real logo at the bottom of the screen and follow the links) I get nowhere. Everything seems to start OK but after a few minutes of '...loading' I get a timed out error. Every time.

I appreciate your help, but this isn't worth the effort to me, so I have uninstalled it from my PPC.

Its a shame, because I like to see anything that gives Microsoft some competition. Not because I hate Microsoft: I just think that competition (at least in the software market) produces better and more innovative products. I thought the Real Player would challenge the hegemony of WMP but it seems to be going the way of Netscape... :boohoo: Now if Real could morph into something like the Mozilla foundation we might get somewhere .

Nah, don't worry about it. I don't even have it installed on my Pocket PC. It's a bit outdated by today's standards.

There are plenty of other players out there which certainly puts WMP to the test. Pocket Player, PocketMusic, BetaPlayer, GSPlayer, and MortPlayer (to name a few) are all fantastic rival media players. While none of them handle Real streams, I think that point can be easily disregarded since the Real format is by no means the best (in my opinion, anyway).
