View Full Version : Preserving Main memory... tips and tricks

My 4150 is slowing down due to so much 'stuff' being in main memory... So I have diligently installed programs to my SD card whenever possible, moved DLLs to the card and tried to cram as much as possible into the file store (I sure wish Agenda Fusion would fit).
My question is... what other tips and tricks can be used to free that precious internal memory. I'm consistently running with about 18 MB available depending on what applications are open.
Thanks in advance.

There are various tools to help you identify what is occupying your RAM; one of my favorites is WIMR (http://mypaq.net/mysoftware/wimr/index.shtml), and it's free.
One common use of RAM I find is the Internet Explorer cache. Make sure to empty it occasionally if you surf using PIE a lot.

You may want to check \Windows\AppMgr\Install
I've noticed that some apps leave files in there after they're installed. Also, if you use Pocket Informant (as well as AF in your case), check \Program Files\WebIS\PocketInformant. I've found the cabs for their colour schemes and icons in there after installs/upgrades.

Lots of good tips in this thread:

I have a question about moving DLLs to either file store or a SD card.
Can all DLLs be moved while still allowing applications to run appropriately?
If not, how do I determine which can be safely moved? And whether to move them to the file store or the SD car?

Memmaid keeps a list of *.dlls that have been tested to be safe to move. If you are using systempath, or moving something with Memmaid that hasn't been tested, I'm afraid it's trial and error. FWIW, I find that today screen items can't be moved, while it's hit and miss with everything else.

What is the difference between moving DLLs to file store versus a SD card? I realize that they are differnet types of memory, but does the ome location versus another impact the application associated with the DLL?

SD/CF cards are usually initialised late in the soft reset process - you could run into a situation where a program or *.dll is called for, but because the card(s) have yet to be initialised, it isn't available yet. User-available ROM storage however, is almost always available very quickly (after all ROM is also where the OS sits).
This is also the reason why it is recommended that programs with today screen plugins be loaded into main memory or ROM storage.

The other thing to consider also is that your file store will always be there, but if you own multiple SD cards, you'll need to be wary of what you're doing whenever you swap them. A needed DLL may no longer be there just because you had a different card swapped in.

Hi,
I've found some files that look like internet cache under Windows/Profiles/Guest.
Would it be ok to remove the Guest Folder altogether? It's got 2mb in there 8O
Thank you

That may cause problems.
I'd recommend going into the Cookies, History and Temporary Internet Files folders under that folder and deleting everything in those. Or you can fire up Pocket Internet Explorer, tap on Tools then Options and then on Clear History and Delete Files then the Advanced tab and Clear Cookies. That way's a bit safer ;)
