Is there a program I can download that will play all kinds of video (mpeg, quicktime, etc.) and audio (mp3, wav) without upgrading to the latest version of Windows Media Player?

BetaPlayer (http://betaplayer.corecodec.org/) would be your best bet. You will want the latest v0.5 release.
