Maybe this is old news, but at Dell.com today, you can order a new Axim x50v and they say they'll send a free upgrade ($39.95 value) to Windows Mobile 5.0 in October when it's available. Those of us who bought our Axim's before the free upgrade window will have to pay.
The cost is fair, but I'll probably wait to see how some upgrades go before I jump.

Not me, I'll jump the day it comes out. ;)

Yeah...I just ordered my X50v last Friday and got it today (love it, BTW) and I checked the box to opt in for the CD of WM5.0 when it ships.

Hopefully, it doesn't suffer from the same old delays from when the X50's first shipped. :|

I'm sure I'll upgrade pretty quickly. But, Just why do they want / need to charge $40 for this? Do they really need to squeeze more money out of us? And is the CD distribution some kind of control thing? The only reason I could think of distributing it on CD is to try to keep 'piracy' down.

Does anybody know whether Dell Australia will be offering Australian customers a similar deal to Dell US in the near future - ie. a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 for new Axim purchasers? Or, whether they will be selling the upgrade to Australian customers at all? I've sent several emails to Dell asking this same question, however no one seems to be able to help me.

Difficult to speculate about the deal, Kelly, although from my browsing of the local website the specials offered by Dell Oz do not mirror those in the US. We get special prices but rarely are we offered sweeteners like cheap BT GPS etc.
You can back it in we'll be offered the WM5 upgrade to purchase locally. Otherwise there will be all sorts of ripped copies going around (well there'll be that anyway). Exactly how soon after it's available in the States is anyone's guess.
Not surprised that Dell have not replied to you regarding the deal -- it's not good business to pre-announce special prices; they want you to buy now!

So what form does the upgrade voucher take? I just bought a new sealed X50v this week but not straight from Dell's website. If the free upgrade is based on how recently the PPC was made (such as based on the serial #) then people in my situation can still get it. There wasn't any paperwork for this upgrade in the Dell box. Anyone know?

I didn't buy mine from Dell either, so I doubt we'll be offered the upgrade. Why should Dell give us something they'll have to pay Microshaft for when we didn't give them any money? The OS comes from Bill's boys not from Dell. Personally, I'd like to have the option of sticking in Palm's OS the way you're soon likely to able to put the MAC OS on your PC. Having the choice of which one you use would make them both either keep their prices lower or make the upgrades cheaper. If you could just switch to someone else's software rather than be forced to buy a new version of theirs just because they thought you'd had it long enough they'd have to play fairer with us.

As far as I can tell there won't be any paperwork for the upgrade at all. The CDs will just be sent automatically to the people who bought X50s within the time frame. They're treating it like a pre-ordered item that you order at the same time as your Axim. So no, if you didn't buy it from Dell, you can't get the free upgrade. I'm sure you'll still be able to buy it though, $40 really isn't that much.
