Well, this is what happens when I blindly copy specs from HP. ;) Anyway, it's partly right, but I'll update the post just to make things clearer.

Just for the record: The Register picked this story from msmobiles.com story about it (http://msmobiles.com/news.php/3937.html), that was published much before The Register.

Unfortunately The Register is not crediting anybody (they even don't credit Taiwanese press, from which they copy articles), so maybe you guys at Pocket PC Thoughts at least could credit stuff properly once in a while? (or just don't credit The Register, because it was not the first and not the originator, and The Register generally is anti-Microsoft)

For comparison, that's $807 US. Anyway, I never have been psyched about this device - especially since it has that square screen and a 312MHz processor. The quad band and GPS are pretty cool, but it would need a VGA screen, minimum 624MHz processor, built-in WiFi, and 2-3 times that RAM for me to even turn my head.

Skype requires 400 MHz or more to work...

The article's text is significantly different, so there is nothing there to suggest that it was a direct ripoff; instead, it's quite likely that the information was given to both The Register and MS Mobiles simultaneously. Just because MS Mobiles posted the information supposedly a few hours earlier (note that it has the same date at both locations), it doesn't mean that they own the information. We credit the article based on where we see it and we always take the necessary steps to ensure that the original source is mentioned (and in this case, there is no definitive source). We saw it at The Register first - hence, the credit. If you have an issue with The Register's handling of the information, please take it up with them directly.

As I said earlier, we take the crediting of sources very seriously. Based on what you just said, it seems a little unfair to accuse us of only "crediting stuff properly once in a while". On every occasion, when we see information posted on an external website, or we are sent information from an outside source, we always ensure to credit the source accurately and appropriately.

The Register doesn't have link to the HP Singapore website. MS Mobiles has this link. You publish this link so it means that you took it from MS Mobiles right?

Apart from that: you are right, nobody owns this story because link should go to HP Singapore only. I was just a bit confused that you credit The Register, even though it doesn't have link to HP Singapore but MS Mobiles has it...

Um...no. :? FYI, I went to HP Singapore myself and got an appropriate link. Note that in this context, it would be highly inappropriate to consider links as material protected under copyright.

I bet you could squeak Skype by on 312mhz. The lack of WiFi though would be the limiting factor. BT and GPRS just don't have the bandwidth for SKype's VoIP scheme. I wonder how well Microsoft Portrait would work? I just checked and there is a Smartphone version. I'll have to play with that.

I could not agree more, this one is a Pinto priced like an Aston Martin. Plus HP does not have the best track record as far as convergent devices go. I will pass too.

Add Windows Mobile 5.0 and a WiFi radio and I'd buy this in a heartbeat. Heck I'd buy 2! I wish they made a "corporate" edition of this without the camera, but with WiFi.

I think they are going to make a version w/o camera. Surely they could fit a WiFi chip where the camera junk used to be.

Dunno. Seems like a too-little-too-late answer to the Treo 650--and the 650 doesn't cripple apps with its square screen. There are just all kinds of limitations inherent in this design.

You know, a much simpler and better solution would have been to have the hardware keypad be a flippable/slideable part, and keep the QVGA screen. Innovations are supposed to try and make it better; c'mon, HP, get with the program.

A 320x320 screen would have kept it up with the times. It would then be competitive with the Treo in that respect. Also, that would have been better for the GPS.

Sounds BAD ! No real GPS but positioning based on EDGE???. So, no GLOBAL positioning!

Don't panic! I have heard from people who have these devices already (HP gave away some for testing), that it has full GPS, not A-GPS.

Yes, according to my HP sources, that will be an option that they will offer... at least to their corporate customers...

Would have liked a 320x240 instead of 240x240.
WM5.0 would have been welcome.
WiFi would have been welcome (I do have a 256 SD+WiFi, so this is minor)
Camera is welcome if it performs like a 1.3MP on a Nokia (if not do away with it, it's just a waste of space).
I don't use/need GPS.
= I probably won't be getting one.

This device doesn't interest me in the least. I don't like the square screen, the GPS won't be utilizing a SIRFstar III chipset (I wouldn't want anything less), the keys don't look comfortable (they appear almost too convex for my taste, but I could be wrong in regard to that), the processor is much too slow, the memory is a joke, and it won't offer WiFi (not until a later model, anyway).

People want power and better specs in these types of devices.

Still waiting for the HTC Universal (in black... ).

hp has posted info about the HW 6500 (no camera) and 6515 (with camera) on the uk website. Links to buy are for 395 pounds for the camera model on a number of UK websites, including insight, projecting availability July 1.
