Another sighting on the web indicates that the P505 <a href="http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/pdas/pocket-pc/asus-p505-sighted-105936.php">may contain Skype </a> in the ROM, however for all we know, the model sighted here may have just had it installed to its RAM. An interesting looking device, and a shame if we never get to officially play with it over in North America. Well, there's always eBay if it turns out to be your perfect Pocket PC.

we may also be able to get a hold of it via eXpansys, so there's always hope!

not exactly clear from the photos; when the numpad is opened, does it wrap around to the back, or does it hang out in empty air, making a nuisance of itself?

Oh my deity! That is one ugly ....... 8O
Loose that flip!!! It looks like it has been stuck on as a last minute deluded 'good idea' by someone who had severely aesthetically challenged design capabilities!

I believe it hangs out in empty air! About as useful as t*ts on a frog!

Not even WM2003PE Second Editione then - for a NEW machine??
1050mAh battery - for a Phone edition? My MDA has 1200mAh battery and I thought that was the smallest that it should reasonably be. :?

Excuse me, but I don't think it is right to comment so sharply when you've never seen the device yourself. :? Also, many things you said is not true . For example, the device does have WM2003 SE, and the flip is neither useless nor ugly. From what i've seen so far, it erects the device while putting it on a table. See the pictures in http://www.mobuy.com.tw/shop/product.asp?pid=10001513. As for the battery, I believe that many other manufacturers use the same kind. [/url][/i]
Edit: the device is ONLY around $500.(a lot cheaper than MDA)

I like the idea of a flip.. missing it on my Imate JAM - I used to have a P900 for 18months and loved it.
Loose the external antenna for sure though

I've seen the device multiple times and I think without a doubt it is the best PPC available. My favorite thing about it is the flip. It gives you a numeric keypad to dial your numbers on, one of the main things I miss about a dedicated phone. It is also great because when the flip is down, the thing runs just like a normal PPC, but when the flip is up, it has a little mini-phone like OS, where everything is really simple to operate one handed. I'm lusting after the device here.
The only thing keeping me from buying it is the lack of Windows Mobile 2005. I asked at their booth at Computex if they were going to upgrade it to WM 2005 and / or bring it to America. He said they were having problems with the wireless carriers, so there were no plans to sell it in America and that there probably wouldn't be an upgrade for it. What he did tell me is that they are releasing a new model at the end of the year.

Myself as well -- I bought a Smartphone specifically for the keypad. It's much nicer when you're not looking at the device.

For one reason or another, this doesn't bother me. Maybe because I've used CDMA devices for too long. ;)

I really admire Asus for the software customisation they did to improve the WM PE UI, with large icons and a custom launcher. I think this is work which MS should have done from the start, but I'm glad some-one took it on.
For this alone I hope this device succeeds in the market, if only to encourage other manufacturers to do the same.

No, this phone have not built in WiFi. I don't think, that ASUS installed some unnecessary-unusable software in the ROM.
A review (by me) can you read (in hungarian language, with many pics) here: http://www.pdamania.hu/content/3905/

I wonder if Asus had the SP230 (http://www.anextek.com/sp230.htm) in mind when designing the P505. ;)

Thank you! That's exactly what I was thinking. In fact, I think I said that in a previous thread but nobody agreed with me. I had the sp230 for a while and I totally agree, the flips look a lot alike. And I actually liked it. It made one handed dialing really easy. But it did look dumb when flipped down to use the screen. Can't win, can we?

I've had the opportunity to have P505 in my hands and there are three small problems:
One is the antenna...nowadays nobody should consider putting an antenna outside a Pocket PC or mobile phone.
Second is the Stylus, instead of being on the top it's on the bottom :? which isn't usefull...
Third is the keyboard, it's a numeric keyboard, there are no letters...For newbies this can be a negetive point since they don't know were te letters are...

I think the difference between the sp230 and the P505 was that in the sp230 the flip pad could be removed - like the Sony Ericsson 900i. So if you didn't like it - you could remove it! On the P505 it looks to be a permanent part of the unit. It is going to be a problem for left handed people - the flip is going to get in the way I believe.

One is the antenna...nowadays nobody should consider putting an antenna outside a Pocket PC or mobile phone. Agreed 1000%.
Second is the Stylus, instead of being on the top it's on the bottom :? which isn't usefull... Yeah! Really useful when its in its cradle! Duh!
Third is the keyboard, it's a numeric keyboard, there are no letters...For newbies this can be a negetive point since they don't know were te letters are... Never mind the newbies. Most people are going to find that a problem! That is such an elementary oversight - why even bother with a flipad? I have this aweful feeling this is gonna be another MPx! White elephant anyone?
