I wouldn't recommend an IR or a direct connect one. You already know why on the IR, but the direct connect ties you to the 4150, or HP at least. The newer HPs would fit, but you have to do a little filing to make it work. Think about the price of the direct connect keyboard, and then spending it again if you get a new PPC. With the BT you can most likely use the same keyboard with and through several PPCs. You can pick them up for under $90 these days. I'd go for the Think Outside (even with the lack of a number row, or the Freedom (by whatever name). Do a search on this site. Folks are allways posting good deals on them. HP's own is a bit pricey, and again you are locked to HP because of there silly driver parochialism.

If you are set on trying to save money though, you can usually dig up a good price on a Compaq/HP Foldable Keyboard FA118A. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5778343879
for instance. NO Endorsement implied whatsoever. You can also pay $100 for it, http://www.niceelectronics.com/PDA/discr15632.htm, so shop around for a price and seller you are comfortable with.

Don't know which IR keyboard is good, but I would advise against the Pocketop. The Pocketop is one instance where looks can be deceiving. Build quality is good, and it comes with all manner of reflectors. But it doesn't work well with my 2210. It can't keep up with my typing, and I'm a sloow typist.
