I went to the manufactures website for my PPC for the first time in months. I found that they have a fix for a speaker feeback problem that I didn't even think they would be able to fix.
Just goes to show that it pays to check for updates regularly.
For the whole 2 people who also own a Mitac Mio 168, check my post in the
hardware discussion>other pocket pcs section for the details.

Ideally it would be nice if there was a mechanism for notification. Even keeping up with my software is inconsistent.
Currently I have a favorites folder called support with bookmarks to the support pages of some of the ones I'm interested in.
Then at any given time I just select open in tabs for that group. Then I can peruse for updates all in one shot. I still miss some.
I do it mostly every day.
Yes I know I have a problem.

For me, this depends on the software and whether or not it's something that is freeware/shareware or licensed.
Although I do check for updates for my freeware/shareware applications, it's pretty rare since I can usually just download newer versions as needed. However, any software in which I own, have won, or have otherwise legally obtained is checked for updates weekly. This is done so that I can be sure of obtaining the newer version before my download access expires for that given application.

Funny - first thing that came to mind is that I get these daily e-mails from PPCT. :-) Also, the majority of software I have is either from a pretty large company that regularly sends out updates or is bug-free enough that I don't care to look for updates.
Even for the major software, I don't tend to look for updates too often unless there's a bug/feature I'm hoping/waiting for.
As for device/OS updates, I gave up on those when HP announced no upgrades for the iPaq 2200 series. At this time, I am waiting for the next gen devices coming with WM 5 and will not be buying another HP device after getting stiffed on the potential to upgrade the current device. (I like it enough, but would have been willing to pay a small fee to upgrade the OS as Compaq used to allow.)

I'm going to sound like Scoble (http://radio.weblogs.com/0001011/), but this is the perfect use for RSS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rss).

And of course, FeederReader. Who is going to work on this infrastructure. What capability do we need from the RSS Aggregator?

When I'm expecting an update, I check daily. Otherwise, I check weekly...

Between RSS feeds, subscription emails being sent to me from the author's site and postings on this site I don't think that I miss any update announcements for 95% of my software. I definately don't miss anything from any of the major players. The only update announcements I do miss are from sites that really do not send out any advertisments or upgrade notices. I don't think that these authors would be able or willing to set up (or pay for) the needed technology to push any info down to us.

I was thinking of a combined vendor and community effort. We could have a specific community RSS feed (maybe per platform) that simply lists the program, platform, version and a link to more information. Not sure how that's different than the Announcements forum topic, though.
The "technology" is simply a blog. Doesn't cost anything from a provider like blogger.com.
I'm still wondering if this is really worth doing when we already have the Announcements forum on PPCT.

I just started using a little while ago an RSS feed from Handango to get my news on updates. There are other types too. Very nice.

For my device (hx4700), I know any major updates will come through PPCT. Same applies for my larger applications like PI or PocketBreeze, but for smaller applications which don't get that much publicity, that's where I feel I could use a "push" solution.
It would be great to have one central location where all of my updates are managed. Perhaps that's where a potential RSS solution can play in the near future as some here have implied.

I like the "I check pocket pc thoughts" comment.
But usually, every other month or so, I surf the manufacturer site. Nothing scheduled or anything like that; I just get the feeling I should check for updates.

I check almost religiously, and that goes for updates on my PC too.

Maybe what we could do is create a forum specifically for vendor software update posts, then create an RSS feed specifically for that forum. The only problem there is that you'd probably get a lot of updates about software that you don't use, and only some that you do. Someone remind me about this in a few months. ;-)

I know HP has a notification facility for their updates - I basically subscribed for notification of my model (h6365) and they email me each time they release a ROM or driver update.
How often and whether they do release updates - now that's another matter... :D

I tend to look every few days when I'm annoyed with an issue and hoping a fix will come soon. Then I wait 6 months, return, and its there!

Yeah this is really cool 8) . Handango dishes up the RSS feed on updates any way and in any combination you want.

Just before I shut down every night I take a quick look at the 10 and and updated apps on the Pocket Gear and Handango websites. If there is anything of mine that has been updated I will download. This, along with developer update emails or PPCT front page posts keep me pretty up to date.

My \Windows\Favorites\Software folder currently has 289 URL files in it. Perhaps 10% gets used every month, just checking on software with either too many bugs or not enough features. The rest are either good enough already or links to stuff I've tried and uninstalled, but save the links for forum sharing.
As my main device is still a Dell X5 and my backup device an iPAQ 3835, I no longer check for updates. No point. As for the old Casio EG-800... the last update was a ROM flash (yup, I know, a MIPS VR4122 is not supposed to be flashable, but the update has survived umpteen hard resets) from late 2002 which changed the way the filesystem accessed resident flash memory (14.2MB built-in, partitioned into 2 'discs'). I doubt Casio has further support plans.
