i really miss my avantgo, but after that rework came out, i cant stand to use it anymore. i tried various rss readers, but since i spend very little time connected to the internet on my device, its not worth it. i tried newsbreak, and that just appears to be rss. im currently using mobireader pro, but the very poor channel selection and inhibitive channel picker make it suboptimal as well.

i appologize if im beating a dead horse here, i know theres been alot of avantgo bashing going on in the last several months. please direct me to the appropriate thread

thanks!

Have you given Plucker (http://www.plkr.org/) a try? The Palm guys rave about it, very few use AvantSlo any more.

The port to PocketPC I'm told is very robust through Vade Mecum (http://vade-mecum.sourceforge.net/)

Plucker or iSilo (not free) both work great, better than AvantGo IMO.

There's a little more configuring to do, but the good thing is you can customize a lot more- how deep to load links, how often to pull new content, etc. iSilo has a lot of options on compressing reducing graphics as well. Both allow you to store downloaded content on memory cards too.

AvantGo generally works fine for me (didn't "upgrade", thanks to helpful comment of those here who tried it first), and when I've looked into alternatives, the relatively massive configuring work and inconsistant performance have stopped me from pursuing anything else.

AvantGo does those specific things, and with a simple registry hack you can put it's content on a memory card (although performance to too slow to use that way). It would be helpful to me if someone expanded on the "etc." to bring to light some true benefits of the (especially the free) alternatives.

I get a sense that those who have adopted alternatives have done it more out of a hate of AvantGo than for the real benefits the alternatives offer. And their hate of AvantGo causes them to tolerate the extra work and inconsistent performance.

I'll grant you the extra work involved. AvantGo was pretty much install and go kind of solution, but I've had better consistency with the alternatives (plucker, iSilo), which is why I continue to use them.
