http://www.ereader.com/product/detail/15005

eReader.com has released an updated version of their eReader Pro software for the Pocket PC. eReader Pro has a number of features not supported in the free eReader software and one of my favorites has been allowing reference ebooks to be used, like dictionaries. The problem is the app was very slow in looking up words. This speed has been greatly improved and it works fine with my 10.5MB College Dictionary I purchased from them a few years ago.

More interesting than that though is a new feature called RSVP, or Rapidly Scrolls Voluminous Phrases. No, wait. It is Rapid Serial Visual Presentation. :)

You control how fast it works, whether you want 1, 2 or 3 words at a time and other settings. Personally, I don't care for it. I never cared for the autoscrolling that the eReader Pro version has either, but I know many people love that feature so I have no doubt some of you will appreciate the new RSVP feature. It is simple to enable and turn on. Once on, the lower two thirds of the screen highlights the word(s) in the RSVP window, which is at the top of the screen. The idea is you rarely if ever look at the bottom part of the screen and just let the word(s) flash by at the top, preventing your eyes from ever having to move. It is a feature you will want to either use or don't as switching between RSVP mode and full page mode requires fully repaginating the whole book. The Pro version is $14.95 and comes with a small dictionary.

Does anyone know of a way to convert the pdb files to pdf files???

I love ereader and am now using a tabletpc. I would LOVE the ability to use ink for notes on these books!!

Anyone?

One thing that greatly troubles me - the new RSVP feature is a direct copy of Mobile Dynamo's Speed Reader Plus's Color Bar technology which is patent pending according to their website. Even if you don't agree with sw patents (I don't), its very sad to see this.

I hope the makers of eReader do the right thing and license it from this small developer.

The main thing for me is that it finally supports my VGA display--very crisp text :D

I was waiting for this, but now that it is out I think I'll uninstall it. I just got used to MS Reader and buying books from fictionwise (in unlocked format).

I used to use MS Reader exclusively, until I got a VGA device. After trying them all, I chose eReader and am quite happy with it. Even disregarding VGA, I find it superior to MS Reader (even the free version of eReader).

I prefer MS Reader only because I can make ebooks easier. I tried making palm ebooks but it actually takes effort to figure out how. I'm simply too lazy :(

The ultimate sign of laziness in our society - now its a bother to even have to move our eyes when we read :D

Just curious is this the same eReader version that was announced earlier this month on Pocket PC Thoughts (downloadable from PocketGear), or is this an even newer version that I should re-download and re-install again?

According to the eReader site, the version number is 2.6.1, which has been out for awhile now.

:bad-words:

Well, mine has a picture.

I didn't even know other sites carried the reader. IMHO, it is easier to buy it from eReader directly because they always keep the updated version in your account.

I bought it last night; I generally like MS Reader, but there are a couple of books that, as of right now, are available only in eReader format. I didn't get to install it until today.

My initial impression: still annoying! You apparently cannot choose the installation location: the setup program automatically installs to internal RAM. And, for no apparent reason, the menus at the bottom of the display get garbled: when I tap on "Book" or "Go", the menu that pops up is shrunken with illegible lines rather than the normal text of the menu items. The d-pad will still scroll through the menu options, and they get legible when you scroll onto each one, but this is really annoying.

And as for the "themes" -- c'mon, who wants to read a book printed on brushed aluminum?!

I'll use if for the books I bought with it, and I want to really test the auto-scroll and RSVP features, but at this point I'm looking for an app that converts .pdb files in .lit files...

Just my $0.02.

If you don't want it in main memory, just move it to wherever you want to run it from. You mention the squashed menus, what device are you using?

I've got an X50v and the menus look fine here. While I couldn't care less about brushed aluminum backgrounds, I can easily set the background & text colors to my personal preference (white text on black background), which I find very useful. I also moved it into built-in storage. So I'm happy! :)

The last time I gave it a test drive, I did move it to a storage card manually; I just think it's silly that the installation app doesn't give you that option from the start. (And why not use ActiveStynk for installation? If -- no, when -- I have a hard-reset, it's a lot easier to re-install all my apps through Add/Remove Programs in AS than it is to re-run all the installation programs.)

I'm using a HP h2215. The menus remained squashed even after I exited the app and re-ran it. After a soft-reset, though, it was okay again. (At least for now.)

I figured it would be an Ipaq. I think you will find that the squished menu isn't just an eReader problem but one that happens on may apps, at least from my experience. It has only happened on my 2215 and my 4150.

....btw, how did the activation process go after that hard reset? Did you have to monkey around with cookies to get it to work like so many other? Besides the aluminum theme that you didn't like, did you like some of the others compared to those available in MS Reader? ;) How many font choices does MS Reader have these days? How many color settings does it have for font and backgrounds?

Luckily eReader only has a couple of silly little installation quirks, other than that it is ROCK solid! Give it a chance BugDude10, I think you'll find it is worth the effort. And, you won't have to put up with being razzed by guys like me. :)
