ok so i want to connect my pocket pc to the internet via my n-gage. The n-gage uses a simple gprs connection and both devices have bluetooth. I've read the tutorial on how to do it, but there is just one thing i dont understand.
Enter the required information for the GPRS or CDMA connection (or dial up to an ISP). If using GPRS the "Phone Number" should be in the format *99***1#, where 1 is the connection configured in your mobile phone.
what do they mean by the *99***1#???? i have no idea what i am supposed to put in this feild. I dont know whether im supposed to copy and paste or put it my own mobile number, i seriously have no idea.
can someone dumb this down a shade for me?
thank you :oops:

In which country are you, and who is your cellphone operator.
The 99* etc string is the code what tells your device to use the GPRS connection. The 1 is the APN number of your connection settings, and may go from 1 to 3.
Your exact dialling code depends on who your network is. The setup should be similar for the ngage as for any other phone. Try googling for pocketpc GPRS bluetooth setup with the name of your network and something should pop up.

thanks for the reply, there are still some things i dont understand.
First of all i live in Australia and am with optus network.
how do i find out what number to put in the field? is it even a number? do the
"*" stand for numbers or astrixes? i seriously have no idea. How do i find out the exact number to dial? do i call optus? if so what do i ask for?

The asterisks are asterisks, not place holders. Juts type them in exactly like that, with no phone number. Here is an old web page giving some directions.

Good luck. If all else fails call costumer service, and they will walk you through it.

I'm sure your carrier would be more than happy to assist you. Here in the Philippines, they just send you some sort of setup file that arrives on your phone as a text message. Once you save the set up file, your phone is configured. Then you create a new connection in your PocketPC with "*99***1#" as the telephone number. That's it.
After that you just wait for the carrier to charge you some exorbitant amount per kilobyte.

on the contrary im afraid. I rang my mobile carrier (optus) and they told me they could not help me in any way.
This is the process that i go through to try and connect, maybe im making a mistake somewhere.
pocket pc - on (bluetooth on)
n-gage - on (bluetooth on)
pocket pc, new, connect!, access the internet via a dial-up modem, select nokia n-gage, create shortcut,
select a connection to use: . select "new connection" enter a name, leave country and area code BLANK and enter "*99#"
yet it still doesnt work. is there something im missing here? i can't believe this is so hard to do

Do you have a wait for dial tone before dialing checkbox in your setup? If so that needs to be unchecked.
Also, in the connections area, locations, dialing patterns, For local calls dial "g" for long distance calls dial "g" for international calls dial "g"
(enter only g)
Hope this helps

Hmmm.... I guess you're quoting one of our guides, right? I wonder why people don't ask the authors about this kind of things... :roll:
I've used GPRS on Optus while in Sydney. Nothing special about it. Make sure your N-Gage can connect to the Internet. If all works ok, on your Pocket PC enter *99# (which will use the default connection), and on Init string enter
Z;+CGDCONT=1,,"[APN]"
[APN] must be replaced by the APN name. This way you can connect regardless of the configuration on your phone.
Also, most important - make sure your account does have GPRS enabled.

ok theres still some things i dont understand.
first of all,
* phone definately has gprs and bluetooth enabled.
/**/
now, i dont understand when u say "init string" is that on the ppc? or on the phone? how do i get my apn number?
/**/
once again this is how i set it up. (i didnt put in the Z;+CGDCONT=1,,"[APN]" because i didnt know where to put it)
/**/
new > connect > connect to the internet via a dial up device > select n-gage > new connection > no country code, no area code, phone number input is : "*99#" > accept connection from pocket pc
then i get to a screen that asks me to input a password and a domain, what are these and what do i put in the fields?
are there some settings i should input on the phone? if so what are they?

Call Optus and ask for their APN ane, user name and password. They will tell you that.
While you're creating the connection and just before you finish you'll see a buttont [ADVANCED]. Tap that button and enter the init string in the appropriate field.

i seriously give up.
i rang optus, got the apn which was "prepaidyesoptus" and put exactly this into the init string: Z;+CGDCONT=1,,"prepaidyesoptus". i also selected "use a specific ip address" and put in optus' ip address. i left the name and pw blank and told it to dial the number "*99#" and still nothing! theres something wrong. ive done everything that was said to do, so it must be some other kind of problem. this sucks because its one of the main reasons why i bought the phone in the first place. :(

USe an automatic IP address, and check that your account can use GPRS. Also rotate from *99# to *99***1# and so on until *99***4# - it may be something on your phone too.

Are you trying to connect your PocketPC to the phone to surf? or just to email?
When I was using a Sony Ericsson T68i, connecting my iPaq 2210 to the internet was so simple. Not so with my Nokia 3650. Tried everything the carrier said but I still couldn't connect. Your N-Gage operates on the same Symbian OS as my 3650. So I've given up on trying to surf via GPRS using my 2210. GPRS is too expensive here anyway. I only use Wi-Fi for that.
But I can still send and receive emails via GPRS with all sorts of attachments, including *.doc, zip, rar, and tar files. What I do is, for example, I create the *.doc files on my 2210 using Textmaker. Then I send the *.doc file to my 3650 via bluetooth. I compose the email on the 3650, attach the *.doc file, then send it. I have a Bluetooth keyboard that works on both my 2210 and 3650, so composing email on the 3650 is not a problem.
Also, I check/receive my emails using my 3650. If there is an email attachment, say a *.doc or *.zip file, I just send it from the 3650 to my 2210 via bluetooth.

If you can check e-mails then you should be able to browse web sites. On your Pocket PC you can open File Explorer, browse to \Windows and tap welcome.exe to run it.
This will recreate two configuration files that have strange names - so strange that sometimes a user can delete the files by mistake. After this soft reset and try connecting again.

Still can't connect, but thanks anyway.
I'm using my Nokia 3650 excusively (no PocketPC) to check/receive emails. I just transfer the email attachments to my 2210 via bluetooth.
I will appreciate other suggestions.
