View Full Version : Giving up the PC!!

Has anyone completely given up their desktop for a PDA, or know anyone who has??
I have almost had it with my big clunky computer, it takes up a lot of room and I seem to only use it for news, messenger and email. A PDA seems like it would be the perfect device. Small, easy to use and wireless. A laptop would be ideal too, but a good PDA is less than half the price!
Any ideas?
Ooh, I am sorta there.
My home computer simply does back-up of my PDA.
I bring my PDA to work, and need to enter everything into my PDA, without sync'ing up to my computer.
I am getting a new computer soon, and I'm seriously considering a laptop.
What IS the reason for desktops anyhow? They're upgradeable, but it seems that computers advance by leaps and bounds such that people simply get completely new systems after a while.
blah.
By the way, does anyone else go through the he!! that I do with their PDA? double blah.

I would but much of the work I do requires a full fledge computer. But honestly I do use my PDA on campus almost as much as my laptop, its a handy bugger for taking notes on (I can actually write them in Pocket Word instead of having to type them, which really helps when a processor posts pictures we have to copy).

No way, unless I'm using the OQO. If I got the OQO, I can sell my PC away, keeping only my lovely sony 23" LCD.

The only thing I can imagine using a desktop for is a home test server or some place to share out files and such to multiple computers. I personally own 2 laptops, one big Compaq Evo for home use (and a docking station so I can have all my peripherals setup and ready or pop the machine out and move to another place) and a small Acer Travelmate for work / travel. Through a super cheap KVM I bought on Ebay, I can use both simultaneously (Well, nearly simultaneously) when I get home to make sure everything is set.
Works for me, I really don't understand why anyone sticks with desktops anymore unless its one of those ultra-cool ultra-expensive ultra-fast ultra machines people are into building now.

As much as I love my Pocket PCs, I realized a long time ago that for the way I work, screen size and keyboard layout are absolutely core to my productivity. Here's my current main computer:

Next to that, outside the frame, I have a 17" laptop, a 10.6" laptop, and a PVR computer hooked up to a 26" LCD TV...and I use all of them daily for different things. In fact, at the moment, I'm using my two laptops and the desktop for different projets. The way I work means I could never use a Pocket PC for my work - until it comes with a neural input.
I think I have ADD too.

i use one work, one personal and one notebook computers with two pdas one for work and one for personal usage.
since i am a developer, i cant give up using pc and i am pretty sure that how far the pda will evolve, they wont be used for coding, so i'll never abandon my desktop pc

The destroyed Palm happened on the Mobile Experience Tour where some of the road crew took some firecrackers and attached them to a Palm...and boom. :devilboy:

I could probably give up my laptop, but I don't really want to. I get more use out of the PDA during class, but I tend to do heavy duty stuff on my laptop still. Even with the foldable keyboard I haven't been able to adjust to typing reports on so-forth on the little guy, though I do sync them and edit them on my PDA.

Well thanks everyone for your input, I am still determined to ditch the PC and go strictly with a pocket PC, I don't know if it will work, but I'm willing to give it a try, and worse case senario I have to get a PC again... Wish me luck!

My problem is my eyesight. Between all the reading and work I already do on my PDA, I'm suffering from serious eye strain. I'm only 24 and I have reading glasses. 8O
Otherwise, home internet connection would be the only thing holding me back. That's just for this year though. Next year my apartment will be in the middle of this:

I've decided to stop trying to catch up with upgrading my PC just for gaming purposes and do all my fragging on the XBOX. I recently got DOOM3 (I didn't want to finish it on the PC - having to run it in super-low-res isn't very enjoyable) and it is as scary as I remembered it to be.

I really should have said "Four words: Command and Conquer Generals".
RTS games have never been successful on consoles or PDAs for obvious reasons. Since they're my main gaming passion, I don't see myself ever leaving the desktop PC. FPSs port much easier.
