I tried to search on this topic but could not find anything.

Is ActiveSync 7.1 compatable with Outlook 2003? I would like to buy MS Office 2003 but I'm uncertain about the sync issue with Outlook 2003. It seems that Outlook 2002 is always bundled with new PPC's.

Thanks

Hi Montana1, welcome to Pocket PC Thoughts.

Did you mean ActiveSync 3.71? There isn't a Version 7.1 at this stage.

Anyway, Outlook 2003 is compatible with it. You'll rarely encounter any synchronisation problems. Also, just as a heads-up, the latest version of ActiveSync available is 3.8.

Thanks for the info. Yes, you are correct - I'm on ActiveSync 3.7.1. Is version 3.8 bug-free at this stage?

Syncing with Outlook 2003 is good news as I can now invest in the Office 2003 software.

I've installed ActiveSync 3.8 on my computer at work, and I don't have a problem with it. I honestly can't tell any difference between it and 3.7.1 that I use at home.

the one gotcha that has prevented me from upgrading to 3.8 (and I tried, then went back to 3.7.1) was 3.8 only syncs closed files - ie if the file is open in word/excel etc, it will not sync it until the app is closed. this bugs me because I have an excel sheet I keep open and constantly update for days on end (worklog sheet). With 3.7.1 it syncs everytime I save the file; with 3.8 it ignores it. for me, I'd rather have the synced file to view away from my desk than a potentially day or two old.

Nothing is ever bug-free, though it's probably not a bad idea to upgrade to 3.8. However, having said that, it's also considered not a bad idea not to upgrade unless you're having problems with 3.7.1.

But if you're an upgrade freak like me, I'd go for it. :)
