All problems started when some files on my Pocket PC mysteriously disappeared. Several files that have disappeared include the update cab file for Skype. I was totally shocked when I viewed the virus log on BullGuard which I intalled several months ago. There, I found out that it had deleted those those files automatically because they contain a virus called C-something!!!! 8O 8O Skype, one of my most trust-worthy software, contains a virus??? I have been using Skype to talk to my relatives in other country for a long time. There have never been a problem until now. However, I terminated BullGuard's File Watcher by force and download Skype's update file again. Then, I scan it with TrendMicro Mobile Security, which found nothing. As for other files that have been deleted, I don't think they are really harmful to my Pocket PC either. What's the problem?? :( :( Which program should I trust, BullGuard or Skype? Please help me make the decision!!! Also, I will be grateful if anyone can tell me more about Pocket PC virus especially the C-somthing virus.

There are only two viruses for the Pocket PC (at the moment): WinCE.Duts.A and Backdoor.Brador.A. You'd probably have a higher chance of winning the lottery than acquiring either of these two, and they're not "smart" viruses either. If your Pocket PC was infected, you'd know, because it would ask you to initiate an action in order for your device to be infected.

It has been proposed that the incidence of Pocket PC infections will increase within the next few years as more viruses surface, but time will tell whether that will be the case.

In my opinion, BullGuard isn't really the best virus package out there, and I'd probably trust what TrendMicro have to say. The chances of your Skype download file being infected are minimal. Skype does not package their installers with adware, spyware or the like, but having said that, you should always give each downloaded file a scan for precautionary reasons.

So what you were saying about a "C-something" virus, well, the fact is, there is no "C-something" virus. What you were seeing may have been a PC-based virus, not a Pocket PC-based virus.

My guess is that bullguard probably read some of the mobile device code in those files and mistook it for its similarity to the code of a known windows virus (As virus scanners try to figure out variants on-the-fly). I'd trust TrendMicro as Darius suggested.

Thanks for the suggestions. :D I guess bullguard gave the wrong warning. The strange thing is that all files deleted by BullGuard have the same virus. I think all of them have somthing in common that "confused" BullGuard. Should I uninstall BullGuard? Is anti-virus software neccessary? By the way, what are the affects of WinCE.Duts.A and Backdoor.Brador.A.?

If I were to choose between BullGuard and TrendMicro, I'd go for TrendMicro.

Is anti-virus software neccessary?

For the PC, most definitely. For the Pocket PC, you can do without it for now. If the threat levels ever increase in the future, then you can start looking at options available.

By the way, what are the affects of WinCE.Duts.A and Backdoor.Brador.A.?

WinCE.Duts.A: It's just a Windows CE-based virus which infects files.

As you can see, it'd be a worry if anyone wanted to tap "Yes".

Backdoor.Brador.A: This virus is specific only to ARM-based WM2003 devices, and it basically opens up TCP port 2989, and forwards your IP (that of the infected device) to the person who unleashed the virus.

Both are rare, and if you do get it, they are easily removed.

Is there any specific reason that you prefer TrendMicro. I use Bullguard because it is the only virus scanner that offers real-time protection without slowing down my pocket PC significantly. Airscanner offer lots of features. Though, its product has lots of problems.

To be honest, I've based most of my opinions on experience. I've tried TrendMicro, but I've not tried Bullguard, and in terms of which one has been more widely publicised and recognised, TrendMicro takes the cake in that regard. Of course, there are other solutions out there. Even Symantec offers a handheld antivirus solution. You can get by without an antivirus package for your Pocket PC at this stage though, as long as you're cautious in your online activity.

Well, the virus scanner package I prefer is Airscanner, even though it has lots of problem. It offer tons of features which i found useful while doing other stuff. (base on my exprience.) Also, its product is free for personal use. Mobile Encrypter 2.2 is really, really nice. What I am looking for now is a bug-free firewall. (I surf internet with my pocket pc a lot) Airscanner's firewall had really screw up my wireless lan card.

Yes, Airscanner does make some good products. If you're happy with it, I'd stick with it.

Though, Airscanner's product will not be free anymore in June. So, better download it now :D . Is there any other firewall besides Airscanner's?

Unbeliveable, an antivirus program doing what they are supposed to protect against. At least that's how I understand this thread began. If I were Bullguard, I'd be updating my software pretty quick before someone yells "liablity".

Well, I don't think that you should put the total blame on BullGuard. I mean, the case which virus scanners mistaken some innocent file as virus happens a lot  . But you are right, BullGuard should immediately update their software.

I don't know Bullguard from Adam. It sounds like this problem was created by a virus protection program and the result was similar to having a virus. You don't find that ironic?

Its not that bad. As I said, many virus scanners have the same problem. BullGuard is very nice in some aspect if you try it. As I mentioned before, it is the only virus scanner that offers real-time protection without slowing down the Pocket PC.

I understand why you purchased it and probably would have too. I don't think I will after reading this. Idid not know that there are only two viruses for PPC and that my chances are slim.

I appreciate your post and did not mean to blow it out of proportion. Please disregard my previous comment. I meant to see the light side of things. Nothing more.

I didn't purchase it. But BullGuard offers unlimited trial(the copy I have doesn't seems to expire). I've never spent any money virus softwares.
